installing packages
« on: October 04, 2004, 12:32:14 pm »
forgive me if this is a real noob question ... but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get .ipk's installed on my Z.  I've installed them fine under other ROMs.

I'm running OZ 3.5.1 / OPIE 1.1.6 on an SL5600

I have the ipk's on a CF card which is readable via file manager (one that comes with OPIE).

Two methods i've tried
#1 I've launched the package manager, but it would only show all packages installed. It didn't seem the detect the packes on the CF card and of course nothing was displayed when I selected 'show uninstalled packages' from the menu.

#2 in File manager I selected then held on the package i wanted to install to bring up the meny for the package and I would then select 'Open in Package Manage' but I could never find it in the list once pacakge manager opened. I tried the search key and the display uninstalled packages.

I've tried re-installing the ROM, rebooting, restarting OPIE. The packages I am trying to install are definitly not installed yet. THey are Japanese language support in addition to the recent release of the updates for Openzaurus.

Am I missing something or do I have a bug with my Z?

I presume you don't have a Packages file for the ipks (is there a script somewhere to create one automatically?), if you did, then you could create a new feed (from inside the package manager) with file:///mnt/cf as the location etc.

Otherwise use ipkg from the command line.

thank you for the help ... not sure though if I completly follow ...

This is what I tried

from the OZ updated packages list here
I downloaded the packages including the  packages.filelist  file.
ALl were placed on a CF card.

I then opened up the Package manager and selected Actions-->COnfigure
then on the servers TAB i added a new one. for the address i placed file:///mnt/cf

Now that I have probably therougly embaressed myself with how little I know... am i on the right track? If so , that didn't work for me.

what is the command to place in the command like to install a package ... also could anyone point me to a link on common commands I could use/learn ... im a real begining here but eager to learn.
thx

Not sure what's in the Packages.filelist file, but there is a Packages file in that directory too, this is the one you want (or try renaming the one you have by removing the .filelist) as ipkg expects the list to be called "Packages".

Other than that you should be away. Hit the update button and it will 'download' the list and you're off.
