5500 Random lock ups

I've got a 5500, and for the most part I'm happy with it. Trouble is, every so often I do lots of complex stuff and it crashes. It's really freezes up. The screen is on, but garbled. Tthe green message LED lights up, theres no response. When I flick the swictch on the back to "replace battery", it still stays exactly the same. I have to take the battery out and put it back in.

Of course, after that, I lose everything. *Very* annoying and preventing me from using the Z as anythign more then a toy at the moment. Sure I can back it up every night, but all that time re-instaling apps and setting up networking again is a PITA.

It's done it two or three times with the 2.38(?) ROM, so last time I flashed to the 3.0 sharp rom, but that hasn't helped.

(on a side note I attemped to download the latest stable opie rom, but kept getting "No files released" and, from other pages, lots of 404 not founds)

Can you give us a bit more of a clue about what might be causing it?

The older ROMs are no longer supported; the web page needs to be changed.

Look here for the latest ROM (marked unstable, but works without troubles as long as I've been using it):

http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstabl.../sl5000,sl5500/

I'd recommend the 64-0 zImage (that way you have all of the memory as memory and no RAM disk).

Nothing too complex, but it might have run out of memory. Last time it was Opera running for ~ 3 hours, a ~500kb pdf in qpdf2, a console running ssh into another machine, possibly (never got arround to checking it was running) mysqld in the background. I'm pretty sure there was a fourth app open, but nothing too different from the default apps included. I'd just installed kaddressbook and korgaizer 1.9.6 too. Also running a wireless network card (Origo card, no WEP at the time)

But it's crashed without any of those apps (apart from qpdf2 and opera) installed, and none of them, IIRC, running.

I may (may) have clicked shutdown, but that's not guarenteed.

Last time I also changed the default user name, but not UID, from zaurus to "iso" (my normal log in name - makes using ssh easier) by editing /etc/passwd and /etc/group. The SD slot has a 128MB SD card in it (it's crashed without that first time though), formatted as ext2.

I cant see any common link betwwen the crashes, so I'm suspecting a hardware problem, maybe even heat related.

I'll download the "unstable" rom tonight and play with it on my commute tomorrow.

Before the last-but-one crash (two crashes in a week, but I've been stressing it a lot harder then normal) I had a vncviewer program installed, couldn't seem to find an ipk for it this weekend (only one I found was keypebble, which was a dead link anyway)

Keypebble's in the OZ feed one directory up from the one I linked above.

I have found the opera browser to be a consistant memory hog.  I have an 8 MB swapfile set up that is normally enough for everything I do.  But after using opera for about half an hour or so, my memory will deplete to the point that the system will lock up or require a re-boot.  Otherwise for all of my nomal activities the Z is fine.  I am running the Sharp 3.13 ROM with most of my apps installed to the SD card to conserve RAM diskspace for swap.  The only apps that are fast-loaded are my tkcAddressbook and tkcCalendar.
