Socket Recognized as LAN card
« on: January 21, 2004, 11:00:18 am »
Ok, I\'m going to be a newbie here and ask a question!

My Socket WLAN card is always recognized as a LAN card and not a WLAN card when I plug it into my 760.

It does this with the Sharp ROM, tkc ROM & Sash\'s ROM. It does it with the modulized drivers and with the latest drivers compiled in the kernel.

It works fine, as long as I have ESSID broadcast on and encryptioin off on the AP.

Since the card is seen as LAN & not WLAN, I can\'t set any SSID or encryption settings in the GUI. Instead it is using the LAN card settings, which don\'t include that (it gets its settings from the LAN - TCP/IP (1) profile).

So I have two questions:

1. Any idea how I can get the Z to see it as a WLAN card instead of a LAN card so that I can use the settings in Qtopia?

or

2. How do I set the ESSID and encryption settings via the terminal so that when I plug in the card and \"connect\" it will use them? (And then, how do I quickly/easily change them? Can I still have \"profiles\"?)

Thanks all!

All WLAN settings can be modified via the console and the iwconfig command. Depending on your cf driver you will either need to reference wlan0 or eth0.

For example, setting up ESSID and Encryption using iwconfig can be achieved like so:

Code: [Select]
iwconfig eth0 essid "My Network" key s:mywepkey [1]
For further details of iwconfig use, please see:

I can cardctl ident and get the right values, when I try to use the network to connect in qtopia, it doesn't allow me to connect because there is...according to it...no wireless card, but using the command line I can use kismet_server and the kismet_qt

I did what you mentioned and it just gave me the error that eth0 doesn't exist.  Also, not sure what I did but it worked for a little bit until I installed the patched spectrum24-2.4.18-rmk3 and the ...-preempt drivers.  But I had those working earlier in the day with kismet.
