How long does a NAND backup take?

I have a new 5600 and have been attempting to create a NAND backup following instructions found in the forum.

I have a 256M CF card formatted as FAT. When I bring up the service menu and select the NAND CF backup entry, it displays a 'backup up CF' at the top of a blank screen and stays there. I let it go for half an hour and got no feedback at all. I finally had to do a reset to get it back. When it came back up, I found a file named /mnt/card/backup that was 22.9 M bytes in size.
This sounds about the right size I think, but shouldn't the file be named differently?

Did I wait long enough?
Is there supposed to be a progress indicator of some sort during the backup?

My sl-6000 takes about 10-15 minutes.


I am not sure about the 5600, but I would think it would be similar or less.

Depends on your storage media, the first time I backed up my SL-C860 I made the mistake of doing it to a Microdrive - Took about an 1.5hrs for the 128Mb backup

If I use my 512Mb SD card it takes about 20mins. - Don't know about a 5600 but I would assume that it was generally quicker because of the limited amount of flash but it's going to vary dependent upon media.

On the 5600, is there any form of feedback that it is doing anything?
How about when it is finished?  I don't remember the exact message, but mine displayed something like "backup to CF" on the top line of the display and then never changed. After 1/2 an hour I had to reaset the Z to get it back.

Could there be a problem with the memory card? It is formatted vfat, if that makes a difference.

I've made 2 nand files but it has been a few months. IIRC the (backup or backing up to CF) changes to (backup OK) on the top of the screen when it's completed.(I think?)

Anyway... the file size is 66.1MB and is named 'syst5600.dbk' it only takes about 5 or 6 min. for my 5600 to complete.

Yes, but you are backing up to the CF-card... aren't you?

Anyway in my old notes I found were Stubear stated that all NAND files on the 5600 were 69271568 bytes or 66.0625MB because of chip size.

So have you been able to make one?

Ok, thanks to all. I figured out my problem.

If you want to backup to SD, you have to remove the CF card!  I have an SD Socket Low-Power Ethernet adapter as well as the CF memory card. Once I remove the SD card, the backup went just fine.
