Zaurus charging mess
« on: October 22, 2004, 09:56:06 am »
I'll describe what I did to my zaurus, but the end result is that it can't charge the battery so I have to keep it on power so it won't drain the battery (which I charge externally).

I connected the zaurus to a car charger with reversed polarity. After finding out it doesn't charge I reversed the polarity and everything worked fine.
At some time I noticed my battery charge indicator wouldn't turn off, and the battery wouldn't charge.
I started reading about, mostly getting help from these forums. At first I thought it was a problem with ROM voltages, so  I tried adjusting and re-adjusting to no avail.
At a certain stage I decided to check voltage on the battery (after externally charging it again) while the Zaurus works.
I connected wires to the battery terminals then ran the zaurus. I noticed that the voltage rises when I connect AC power, but eventually concluded that this was because the battery was not in use. However, the voltage did not rise high enough to charge the battery, so it seems the charging circuit is dead.
a bit more of looking around and I found these posts:
http://externe.net/zaurus/forum/viewtopic.php?t=620
https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...t=0&#entry45112
From the second one I've learned that someone encountered it and had his zaurus repaired.
I wonder if someone tried to resolve such an issue by himself - I live in Israel so mailing the zaurus to Sharp USA just to get a repair estimation could be very expensive.
So, any suggestions?

If you're comfortable in disassembling your Z, and fairly competent with a multimeter/soldering iron, you may be able to attempt a fix yourself. I would look for any diodes near the power port/charging circuit, as those are the most likely victims of reversed polarity.

Check out this site:

If you feel brave enough to attempt this please post back with your results.
