What would be cool is if I installed something to my SL5600 under OZ 3.5.1/Opie and it worked. Anything, I don't care.

   I feel your pain!  And I have a 5500...

How are you installing things?   From the GUI?  Packagemanager as shipped doesn't work, have you replaced it?

Once I learned how to install software into OZ 3.5.1 I haven't had a problem with installs since.

Are you using feeds and ipkg at the command line?

Why don't you just install from the command line? ipkg install -d {ram|sd|cf} <package> isin't hard.

I've installed a few things ;-) and they worked.

Which packages are you having troubles with?

Thank you. My post was sort of a helpless cry of frustration - not unlike, oh, tagging subway cars, for example - but I appreciate all the offers of help. You really got to love the Zaurus community spirit.

Yeah, I've read about the damaged package manager. I've scanned sundry posts and web pages for advice. I've followed cookbook install instructions as slavishly as possible. All good clean fun. There are just too many gotchas. Who can keep track?

I copied the main feeds I needed to a large CF card, and modified the ipkg.conf to point to the feeds using the file:// syntax, since I have never never never gotten any kind of connectivity to my desktop and the net working. That also by following all kinds of helpful roadmaps. It don't work. But that's another thread.

I used ipkg from the command line to try to install the opie-reader. Essential software because I need it to read Doc Savage thrillers in checkout lines. I tried to install it to the SD card using the approach of adding a

dest card /mnt/card

line in the configuration file. Sometimes it seems to install, most recently I just get a lot of back-chit from ipkg about how "opie-reader wants to install foo but that file is already provided opie-reader..." Finally flat-lined with error 56. No matter, when I tried to install it before I couldn't get it to appear on the Opie desktop. Ran

ipkg-link add opie-reader

of course. Sometimes it claims success, some times it claims the package doesn't exist. Even when it thinks it's succeeded, no desktop reader. Tried the same sort of thing to install opie-aqpkg. Same results.

Once had opie-reader actually running!!! Woo hoo! Tried to install the latest Pi-Sync addressbook and datebook apps. Complete floop - apparently they try to install all their links and desktop files to an entirely different directory tree than Opie looks at. Tried to symlink to them. Utter floop. In the process, somehow, the opie-reader went south.

Pity about that package manager. You know, say what you will about Micro$oft, but they rarely release an OS where the user application install software is broken. You've got to admire them for that.

You need to restart Opie to make the new icons appear.

Thank you (again!) Si. Actually, I knew that about restarting Opie, I was just glossing over minor steps.

I can, in fact, get the opie-reader working, particularly when installed to root. Using Opie-AQPKG. I would really like to hear from anyone who has successfully installed either of two commercial packages for the Sharp ROM:

Windrose.... yes, it's definitely more painful than it should be.   Every so often I feel like just going out to buy a PocketPC, or a Palm.  And then I look at the keyboard.  I look at the screen (having a Unix shell on a PDA is verrrrrrry cool)...  and I give it another go.      Sometimes I think I must like the pain, why else am I still trying?


But you got me thinking of a couple things that could probably be quite easily done which would help you, me and others...

- pre-populate /etc/ipkg.conf with current online feeds, saving us a lot of awkward typing

- release a single-download zip file containing the entire package feed, which could be unzipped onto a CF/SD card for those without network connections

- provide an example /etc/ipkg.conf for local feeds as above

True dat, though they probably should be commented out at first for safety's sake. Trying to ipkg update a non-existent Packages file leads to peevish error messages iirc.

Yeah, I was wishing for that. What I did - and you must promise not to laugh - was download the Packages file for the feed and updates and such, grep the filename line, swap the "Filename: " tag for the appropriate url info, feed the whole to wget and go home to dinner.

Which brings me to a related question. Installing packages to root works a whole lot better for me than trying to install to the SD card. It's in me to think that the automagical symlink maker is a little fragile?
Would it work better to always install new stuff to root and then go through by hand, as it were, and move the new files to the card and replace them with symlinks in their original directories?

ipkg-link works fine. I've not had any troubles with it.

What is the problem? You know that you have to run 'ipkg-link mount /mnt/card' to create the symlinks for all the packages you've installed to the SD card (just in case you've forgotten to symlink a required package, et cetera)?

It should then just work; at least it does for me...

Of course, there is the bug whereby symlinks get lost after a reboot - see the release notes, section Package management issues, for a workaround.

Neocal works.  You need to use the oz-compat library.  To install oz-compat you need to have opie-sh installed also.  I also had opie-reader working using oz-compat libraries.

There sometimes seems to be a screw-up with displaying files using opie-reader and also justreader (also using oz-compat) but I usually can get things working again by playing with the setup (although I have not figured out exactly gets the file displayed correctly).
