Installing Sharp ROM commercial aps
« on: November 02, 2004, 05:22:37 pm »
I would really like to hear from anyone who has successfully installed either of two commercial packages for the Sharp ROM under 3.5.1. If you did it on an SL5600, that would be particularly interesting.

StageOne

NeoCal

TIA,
Windrose

I have not tried either but the first one has a trial version, try it.  And I know there are free calcularors but they may or may not have the feature your looking for.  For both of them you will probably need the compat libs to make them work.  http://tux.ius.edu/zaurus/compat/?lastverified=07-MAR-2004

I have both of them installed on my SL-6000 with the original Sharp ROM, I didn't see any problem. Both are very good apps. I'm a happy user.

Unfortunately success stories on the SharpROM won't help the original poster who is specifically asking about installation on OpenZaurus

Windrose, I've heard reports of people getting these two working on OZ with the compat libraries. You might give that a try.

Yes, actually to answer my own post, I got NeoCal to work by (whodathunkit) using the GUI tools! Install to root with aqpkg, and invoke the GUI makecompat tool.

StageOne tends to lie down and die with a problem in the post-install script, which maybe looks for the mime-types file in the wrong place.

At the bottom of the line, apparently I can install apps reasonably well as long as I install to root. Fancy stuff like installing to the SD card drop into a black hole of missing symlinks or who knows what.

There's a general problem with stuff written for the Sharp ROM in that quite often the scripts check /home/QtPalmtop (is that right?) rather than /opt/QtPalmtop which is where is should be (and on the Sharp ROM this is symlinked so that it appears to be correct).

Obviously with OZ, QtPalmtop does actually live under /opt rather than /home as the whole fs is writable.

The other thing to check for is that the script doesn't try to use /bin/bash, as this binary doesn't exist on OZ (make a symlink from /bin/sh to /bin/bash to avoid having to edit too many scripts).

Kzzack! Yes, that's a useful safety tip that I vaguely recall having heard somewhere. We need to add that to the list of things that Absolutely Must Be Told to new users.
