Expansion Adapter Pics
« on: November 03, 2004, 06:33:07 pm »
I've had the 6000 for a while now, and I think I'm starting to want an expansion adapter.  I'd like to get a spare battery now that they may become difficult to find, and as I understand it one comes in the box with the expansion pack.

can someone post some pics of the adapter mounted on the 6000?  I'm particularly interested in the rumored screw holes in the back, and the slider would make a great mount for a car dash with a GPS card in the CF slot...

thanks

I just received the expansion adapter today and it does make the Z6K rather bulky (not that I mind, I like the feeling of ruggedness in the unit).

I'll take some pictures right now and post them on my website.

Okay, posted pics.... they're not the best but they're taken with my snazzy lil Panasonic SV-AV25 D-Snap... weird little SD video/pic/mp3 player/voice recorder... mainly it's my problem with not being a good photographer lol

Anyway, go to
Zaurus Expansion Adapter Pictures

for pictures.

As far as the screwholes on the back goes, there are two sets of holes: two set beneath the threaded holes in each corner which are the ones you're SUPPOSED to screw the long thin machine screws into so that the expansion unit is secured to the Z6K and those aren't threaded.

And another two which are threaded part way through (where I originally started putting the aforementioned thin machine screws, DOH! [note, the instructions don't show or explain the other holes so it didn't seem to click in my head at first]) which seem to be useful for SOMETHING.... don't know what but I'm not sure what sort of slider you're talking about??

That's a serial port with a rubber plug that you can pull out when you want to use it. It is labeled as such with a label looking like "Serial Port ->" which points to the port.

I've counted the pins and there are 16 in total, the same as on the bottom serial port connector so it's possible it can also receive power via this port to charge the batteries like the bottom port.

I'm not sure if it's an additional port which can be used in addition to the port on the bottom or if it is simply a separate connector which duplicates the connection that is on the bottom as I've read somewhere that both ports show up as /dev/ttyS0.

I'll try to take some better pics after I'm done working and have some time.

whoa... she's a beastie!!!!

maybe i'll wait a while... what i meant by the slider was that from looking at the sixk there seems to be a set of rails for the expansion to slide onto.  i thought i might be able to fix the expansion to an arm on the dash and just slide the z into it to connect to gps and power.

what these rails should REALLY BE FOR is a slide on matching cover a la TI graphing calc

just a quick little observation.

I was looking at my expansion sled, and noticed a hole the size of the built-in speaker on the zaurus side of the sled.

I had previously thought that the expansion adapter had its own speaker and microphone. Turns out this is not the case, rather the expansion sled simply has holes for the speaker and microphone on the Z.

Is this a big deal? Probably not, unless you've blown out your speaker or mic.
But I thought it was worth mentioning quickly.
