Wordgame knows no words at all?

Sort of newbie here, so go easy on me...

I installed OZ 3.5.1 on my 5500. I have a 512MB SD card that i install most things to. I installed Wordgame from the OZ feed (using ipkg and ipkg-link). Then when i go to play it, it seems it doesn't know any words.  On the original Sharp ROM version, it at least had a built-in dictionary of some sort.  What is missing? What do i need to do to add a dictionary to this game? Right now it's a wordgame without words, so not much of a game!

All I can say it doesn't work on my machine either and that it worked in the previous versions of OZ. It looks like another package needs to be installed but isn't. No idea what that might be.

The dependencies of the package ("ipkg info opie-wordgame") are probably to blame - there is just libqpe, libopiecore, libgcc and libc. No sign of a dictionary. Perhaps it would be good to compare to a previous version's package.

Hmmm... So how could i go about finding out about that? I'm still fairly new to this, so i don't really know where i'd go next.  Any pointers you can give me perhaps?

Well... you could read up on the structure of an ipk file (ZUG Howtos), get hold of an older opie-wordgame_version.ipk, dissect it and check the "control" file for dependencies. If they are different than in the current version you'll know what to install.

Another option is to open http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstabl...1/feed/Packages and search for "dict" and install whatever you find.

Or you could do what I'm about to: wait until 3.5.2 comes out and hope it'll be fixed by then  Seriously, I have 58 games on my Z just from the default feed, so I've just about forgotten that wordgame exists (my favourites are Froot and Tickypip btw. Total addiction).

I would recommend option 1 since things won't get fixed automagically. True OSS is all about people sending in patches.

Well, I just tried it and got nowhere. opie-wordgame that shipped with opie 1.0 has just one dependency: task-opie-minimal, which in turn has a whole bunch of dependencies I really didn't feel like dissecting - there must be someone somewhere who _knows_ where the dictionary is. At least I would like to file a bug report but I'm not sure where - http://opie-bugs.oszine.de/login_page.php or http://bugs.openembedded.org/ ? Is this an OE packaging issue or an Opie issue?

Somebody said to install opie-i18n-{your_language} .. I tried this (installed to SD, then ipkg-link), but that didn't solve it.

Somebody else said something about /root/Applications/Dictionary/WordGame.dawg. I looked on my Z, and the file is there, but it appears to be empty (and only 48 bytes).

I guess i should try to find a WordGame.dawg file somewhere. It's not part of the package...?

Does one of the input methods guess which word you're trying to use? I thought this dictionary was the one which was used for the word game. I also remember people talking about splitting the dictionary for word game from the input method one, perhaps all you need to do is copy from one to the other.

Yeah, I looked into that, too. The i18n-en package only contains a bunch of 300-byte files and one 5k file - no dictionary obviously.

That would be opie-pickboard which is installed by default - but it doesn't work either! Seems to me like the dictionary-separation process was started but not finished. I'll check older versions of opie-pickboard when I get home.

OK, got it. The words file can be downloaded from Opie CVS - the exact link is http://cvs.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.c...t/words?rev=1.2

You should save that file as /opt/QtPalmtop/etc/dict/words and then you will be able to play Word Game. Upon first usage, Opie compiles the words file (which is plaintext) into /opt/QtPalmtop/etc/dict/dawg which is the compressed version (presumably the plaintext variant can then be erased).

The compilation takes a few seconds and you might get the impression that Word Game is frozen - just wait a bit. Btw the file is over 400K so maybe you want to symlink it from a CF/SD card.

Now on to find out which package in the 3.5.1 feed contains that file...

Closing in on the root cause, and fast  I searched the .oe files and found that opie-i18n_1.1.6.oe mentions "etc/dict". However, there is no opie-i18n package - rather, there ara numerous opie-i18n-* packages. If you look at their ipk files, you'll note that some are about 150K while others are under 10K. Comparing with CVS one finds that the difference almost corresponds to the presence/absence of various words.* files like words.de or words.es. This is not an exact correlation, however - I don't know why.

My hypothesis: when opie-i18n-en is being built, OE looks for etc/dict/words.en on the CVS server and fails because the English words file is called "words" rather than "words.en". So the solution would be

1) to rename etc/dict/words to etc/dict/words.en, or
2) to put an exception into opie-i18n_1.1.6.oe to look for "words" and not "words.en"

I have no idea which would be the correct solutions. Help, Mickey, help!

I downloaded that file, but it's named words.2.txt. I saved it to my SD card. Then i tried to make a symlink to it, but i'm having trouble getting it to work.

Total Linux newbie here, so i'm sure i'm doing something wrong. Would somebody be able to point out what my error is?

UPDATE: Using WinSCP and trial-and-error i got it to work. Still not sure what i did wrong earlier or right this time though!  I first tried making it a symbolic link, but that didn't work. Now that i created it without it being a symbolic link, it worked. So i guess i'll go digging in the Linux documentation to figure out how to properly do this, then start from scratch again to make sure i understand it.
