Compatible Cf Wifi Cards?
« on: November 24, 2004, 03:35:11 pm »
I bought a new C3000 and Symbol CF Wifi card. The CF card is recognized when inserted but I'm not able to set up a connection in the Network settings panel (using "add", not the wizard). I'm not sure the WiFi card is working. How can I tell if it is working or needs a driver?

A more general question, is there a list of CF Wifi cards known to be compatible with the C3000 without having to install a driver?
Thanks for any help.

I guess if your card is correctly recognized, you have the correct driver.  Can you be more specific regarding your problems in establishing a connection? Does the LED in your card blink?

Thanks for the quick reply.
More details... The light on the card blinks when it is inserted, but not after that. In the Network setting panel, I choose 'wireless LAN card' in the list, then click the 'add' button. This brings up another panel labeled 'Wireless LAN - TCP/IP' and a configuration for 'non-spec ESS-ID: any'. There don't appear to be more options, so I have to dismiss this panel by clicking the 'ok' button. This goes back to the Network setting panel, and although there is now a new "Wireless LAN - TCP/IP' service listed, the 'connect' button is not enabled. Another panel says the wireless LAN service is offline.
During this configuration, the light on the card is not blinking.
Thanks.

wlan-ng.conf for what is a possible list...

Im writing this from a c3000...  im using a buffalo (prism) cf wireless. Ive had mixed suces, and Im not sure why , but -

- I had to use infrastructure mode. Selecting a channel wouldnt work.
- havent played with "any sid" yet
- when in inf mode, i had to set the lan to ch1 or it wouldnt work..
- im using 40bit encryption, havent had time to enter those massive 128 strings
- start trying close to the access point. to get an initia connection.

havent had very good range with the buffalo, not sure if its my Ap tho

Dont know if that helps ...

Tchen: is your card in fact correctly recognized, i.e. when you insert your card, do you get a message telling you the correct type of card? If you run the command lsmod in the terminal, after inserting your card, does it show a p80211 module?

holck: when inserted, the CF card does show up as a CF card in the system tray at the bottom of the screen. But running 'lsmod' in terminal does not appear to show anything about the card, but I'm not sure how to use lsmod. Thanks,

To get the Symbol Wireless Networker working with the C3000:

Enter these commands into the terminal:
su
cd  /home/etc/pcmcia
vi spectrum.conf

Delete the # from the begining of the second line
Enter a # at the beginning of the third line
Save the changes
Reboot

(see this thread for more info on using VI)

FWIW, just got an Ambicom WL1100C-CF WiFi card for my new SL-C3000.

Put in CF slot.
Opened up Network app.
Clicked on 'Add' button.
Unchecked 'Non-Spec ESS-ID: "Any" box near top of window.
Typed in name of my wireless network in 'ESS-ID' box.
Left 'Network Type' as shown 'Infrastructure'.
Then clicked on 'WEP' tab at top of window.
Filled in WEP key info.
Clicked on 'PPPoE' tab and did nothing on that window.
Clicked on 'WEB Auth' tab and did nothing on that window.
Clicked on 'TCP/IP' tab and checked box ' Obtain TCP/IP Information Automatically'.
Then clicked on the tab with the little black triangle pointing to the right.
Then clicked on the 'DNS' tab. Left 'Auto-detect name servers' box checked and typed in name of my ISP in 'Default Domain' box.
Then clicked on 'Proxy' tab. Left selection as 'No proxy'.
Then clicked on the 'OK' button at the top upper right of the window.
Then clicked on 'Connect' button at lower right of window.
After about 30 seconds saw that I was connected.
Then I clicked on the Qt button in lower left of Z display and opened up NetFront and voila!
Opened up ZUG webpage!

That's worth plenty, to me.  Good to know my card will work when the 3000 gets here.  Thanks!

ArchiMark: What sort of range do you get with the ambicom? Im using a buffalo (prism2) with a netcomm wireless access point (netcomm). Range is very very poor. About 8 meters and I get dropout. Ive used wireless before and usually it gets around the house at least.

Wondering if I should replace the CF (such a small antenna) or the AP (likewise)....

Just tried and it was fine about 70 feet away from my AirPort base station. When I have more time I'll test it further to see if I can go further away.

I got the Symbol to work by using the "detect" button in the Network configuration app and also by following Zeeuser's advice.

Hi,
I tried what's been said in this thread to get my Symbol Spectrum working in my c-1000, but didn't work.
It is still not recognized as a wireless card when inserted. It appears in the applet as a CF card.
It is suspended and there's no way to wake it.
It works perfect in my 5500.
Any clue?

Tchen, did you get your Symbol card working? If so, how?

I don't think there should much difference between c-1000 and c-3000, but my Symbol won't work with my c-1000.
It's doing the same you said in your post. Blinks when inserted and then nothing. Detected as a CF and wireless applet won't enable 'Connect' button (of course, since it doesn't believe there's a wifi card...   )
I tried many things, but I'm kind of lost now.
As I said, it works in my 5500.
