Universal Infrared Remote-control Viability
« on: November 25, 2004, 08:21:07 pm »
('Tis me first post, take it easy on me.)

I've long had my eye on a Zaurus as a personal PDA, but I'm actually looking to purchase one as a gift.  I have a relative who has been quadripalegic for almost two years, and one of her biggest gripes is the total dependance she has on other people for the little things -- checking e-mail, taking notes, etc.  She currently has a Philips Pronto that she uses around the house to control everything (the whole house is basically on X10) that works fairly well, but we're looking at replacing it with something that can give her more functionality.

How well does the 6000L (I'm in North America) work as a universal remote control?  I was pointed to opie-remote, and it definitely looks acceptable, just wondering if anyone has any comments on it.  Can it do X10 IR?  Can it learn new codes via receiving IR signals from current remotes?  (Sorry if those are painfully obvious questions, the website doesn't make it obvious, though the screen shot indicates it does.)

And aside from IR stuff, does anyone have any experience with someone with extremely limited arm movement using the device?  We're talking enough wrist control to contract (that's bend backwards) the wrist, and one of the two biceps -- no more.  Is there a soft keyboard as well as the sliding one?  Can the 6000L take voice memos?  (I don't believe so, and I saw a rumour that a new device was coming out that could, but I place no confidence in that.)  Can it do IPSec for the WiFi?  Will that completely destroy the battery life?  And what kind of actual battery life does it get?

Lots of questions...

I don't think the IR portion of the device has changed from the 5600.... meaning it's not a narrow beam (as in a remote control) .. but rather a wide dispered beam. So something doesn't need to be *directly* in front of it .. but it also can't reach very far.    - not far -     at all
I have heard rumors (which I don't belive) of someone chaning the lens in the IR section of the Z, but I doubt that is feasable.
The distance will also depend on which remote you use (or make) as it will change the actual distance that can be used effectivly.

The only keybaord I know of is an IRDA one .. kinda projects itslef on a table to type on .. not really somethign that woudl fit this application. But the 6000 has better usb support than the 5600 ... so maybe a regualr usb keyboard could work if you sliced the end with somethign that fit in the bottom serial port of the Z.

You might want to conisder a c series Zaurus. thier larger, and the keyboard is easier to use.   Goodluck
