Where Are All The Cases For 750/860/3000?
« on: December 05, 2004, 03:19:57 am »
Went to Akihabara today to buy a case for my SLC3000 and couldn't really find a good one.  All I could find was a leather type semi opened case for the C860 (http://www.sanwa.co.jp/product/syohin.asp?code=PDA-SL74BK&cate=3), unfortunately it doesn't have enough impact support on the edges, so if the PDA drops pray that it doesn't land on its corners.  This was exactly what happened to my Clie.

I did get one of this though :

It feels very safe for a 60-80k Yen Sharp PDA with room to spare.  There are no side pockets unfortunately, so everything goes inside the case.  This will do for now until I find something that will allow me to access the Sharp faster rather than having to unzip the case.

Just thought I'd share.

I recently bought a universal PDA case for Palm/Ipaq PDAs. It has a holder inside with plastic arms, I'll have to somehow remove the holder and think of something to hold my C860, but I have an idea already. I'll probably take some pictures and put them online for people to see.

There's always the case sofl by Trisoft, which seems a bit more padded that the leather one you showed. Not by much though, but it seems to be designed a tad better.

It is nice, but it leaves the Z unprotected at certain points, and it costs a FORTUNE, way out of my budget
Not sure if it's better padded, I'd have to feel it.

I have yet to find a good case for my 860. I went around Akihabara and Den-Den town till I was blue in the face, but all I could find were those leather wrap around wallets, which come in a couple basic types:

1) You have to remove the extra clip off the battery cover to clip the 860 in. Unclipping it leaves the cover loose, and carrying around the tiny clip without losing it isn't really an option.

2) You put some sort of sticker (Either smooth, sticky vinyl or velcro) and it sticks to a similar base in the case. Not a bad idea, save for all the cases I tried seemed to be made for the smaller 7xx series without the extended battery, and wouldn't close properly around my 860.

No matter what, they compromised on protection and left the edges exposed so you can just flip the top half under the unit for use. They also added too much bulk - the extra thickness of the case made the already large unit unpocketable. Plus, I found that the leather flip wallets made the unit more awkward to hold while using it.

I tried to find a zip-up, pouch, or slipcase style case, but I couldn't find any evidence that something like that existed there. I'd really like to know what they use for cases (other than a drawstring back) for their electronic dictionaries like the Canon Wordtank - which are about the same dimensions at the Z.

Now that I'm back in Canada I still can't find anything - most of the generic cases for PDAs are just too small. Ideally, I'd just like a leather slip case that I can tuck it in to. (I've used the leather case that came with my palm professional for 6 years now - my Palm Vx and Client TJ35 both fit perfectly with their screen covers on.)

I don't really like the Trisoft case linked to earlier, either. The fact that the leather slips over the keyboard and sits between it and the screen worries me. Anyone actually used one of these?

I'm using the grindergear basecamp for my 860.
Not cheap (but I love my Z, so ...), but very decent, rugged and practical.

I really like my pdair case...
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

I notice grindergear is no longer offerring the basecamp or scout.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens
