Zaurus Sl C860 Blocked On The Starting Window

Hi,

I recently bought a Zaurus SL C860, with English OS installed, and after some months without trouble, the PDA began to block suddenly and I had to remove the battery and put it again, to make it work again. This time it has not started again and stay on the first page where it is written to wait for a while (in Japanese of course). At the bottom of the page, there is a black line where we can enter commands from the keyboard, but I could not succeed with any command like shutdown -r now, or other...

If someone has already faced such a problem and/or knows how to solve it, I would be glad !

Might be worth setting up ssh (or telnet) and then trying to ssh/telnet in when it 'locks up' to see if you can track down the problem.

I do not understand "setting ssh or telnet" as my pda is not connected to a network. In fact I am not sure the line where I can enter text is really a prompt line as when I enter text nothing happen, it just disappear when I type "enter".

Oh, that might make life a bit more complicated then, if you could attach your Z to a PC/Linux box then you could use telnet (or install ssh and use that).

What are you doing when it suddenly locks-up? Can you remember what you've installed recently which might have caused this?

Without a network connection it's going to be hard to work out what's going on, though it may be possible to save the output of syslogd/logread and look there after a reset (battery removal).

unluckily I just have a PC under Windows XP.
When the pda has blocked I had just installed Opera 7. And I was trying to remove it as it did not work. but I could not uninstall it, and after the pda blocked up.
I have tried to remove the battery and put it again, many times, but it did not change anything...

That's fine. You have the drivers installed, etc.

Unfortunately you can't edit /etc/inetd.conf to enable telnet if you can't get into the machine.

You could try using samba to connect and remove opera by hand (assuming you know the IP address of the Z, just map a network drive on \\<ip address>\home).

hi,

thanks for your answer, but the problem is more completed, as the Zaurus does not start, and so my pc does not recognize it. I have tried to format it, but unsuccessfully.... I used the soft reset (unlock battery, then FN+Home and re-lock the battery) then Ok+on/off and a menu appears (in japanese) with possibility to check OS and to format the zaurus. But it did not change anything, the zaurus is still blocked on the 1st screen ('Shibaraku O matchi Kudasai' please wait for a while)... and I wait all the night... I do not think the formatting would be so long, so I concluded it did not work either... I am afraid the last and only possibility is to send it back to Sharp... I do not know how I could have broken the OS as I did not remove any file I did not know.

I'm not exactly sure where you'd get hold of the Sharp OSPACK/ROMIMAGE file as I only ever flash 3rd party ROMs (OpenZaurus, Cacko, pdaXrom).

What do you want to flash?

Konbawa -

You said that you bought the C860 "with English OS installed". Do you recall if tis was a SHARP ROM converted to english or one of the modified ROMs like Cacko?

Did you make an NAND backup at some point before the C860 died? This is done via the D+M service menu.

If you made a NAND backup, you can reflash this backup and only loose the changes that you made to the C860 after the backup file was written. You do not have to be able to boot into Qtopia in order to restore an NAND backup. You only need to get to the D+M service menus.

If you did not make an NAND backup, you will need to search the threads for sources on the web for a C860 NAND. I believe (from memory) that Conix has some for Sharp ROMs on their site. You will also need a CF or SD card to copy the NAND file to for restore.

Hi Bob,

I think it was a sharp rom converted to english, but I am not completely sure... and unluckily I did not make a NAND backup as I discovered the NAND menu just yesterday...
I have a SD card, but what kind of files do I need to find exactly?
do I need to find the file: SYSTC860.DBK  and in the NAND menu, flash from my SD card where I have the file?

I have made a NAND CheckSum, and it seems there is a problem with ROFLSYS and PRESET as the Sum1 puts NG instead of OK, and at the end, Master Ver1.40 67b4 NG
I do not undestand this things but maybe it sounds familiar to you...

Konbawa -

You need the file SYSTC860.DBK on a card formatted FAT (DOS). The NAND backup is essentially a snapshot of your entire system.

If you can restore from an NAND - *any* NAND - & boot, then your C860 itself is OK. Then, once you are booting again, you can try flashing the ROM of your choice from the Japanese menu (zImage & etc).

I have not played with the NAND CheckSum, so not sure what its telling you here. Someone else may know & respond.

Be VERY careful playing with the Service &/or Diagnostics menu choices! Some (ageing in particular) have been reported to do a total brickage of the Z! Check the fora first to see if anyone has toasted a machine using a particular function, IMHO.

I always use the NAND backup & restore from the Extra Menu (from page 3/3 choice), BTW. Use the backspace key to go backwards & the restart option to shut down for system reboot. Double check all your choices carefully before selection for insurance.

Chero's link is one of those that I recall. Should get you started, if your C860 is OK.
