why upgrade to 3.13?
« on: January 02, 2004, 03:31:58 pm »
..from 2.38

I have gathered that:
opera 6 is better than opera 5
synching is better
email client is better
calendar and address are better

How much better are they? What particularly is better?

what won\'t work?
will...
tKc ftp work?
ssh client and server?
will intellysnc still work with yahoo?
wireless monitor?
konsole?
wcf12 card?

How much of a drag is it to restore all existing functionality?

Thanks,
Tim McKenna

All the things you listed should still work.

I think I listed the Opera improvements in a previous post (multiple webpages, turn images off, rotation support, better zooming, small screen rendering, etc)

Syncing is now quite bug free but only works with Windows.

The email app is marginally better.

There have been no real enhancements to the PIM framework, but the Calendar looks a lot better and has a lot more views. The Addressbook is a bit of a step back since it does not intelligently select a field to fill all the columns for each entry in the list view if the main field for each column is empty. i.e. an entry with only a company name and an address shows as a blank row in the list view if you are showing the personal name, work phone and mobile phone. Not even the company name is shown like with the previous version.

Overall it is a definite improvment. There\'s a lot more to customise in Qtopia too.

The calendar alone was worth the upgrade (but only if you sync with windows--you CAN\'T sync with anything else).  The network now allows you to select the network to connect to.  You must still setup each network beforehand.  It is very useful to me since I have to use two vastly different networks.  Also wireless sync works.

I am running 3.10, I\'ve got everything I  need running and see no reason to (potentially) break things with 3.13.

Opera 6 is a wash for me, the screen is really quite small.  It\'s more useful, but not a deal breaker to me.

The sync is AWESOME for me, I use windows at work, and the pim is most important to me there, so I just leave the cradle at work and sync with outlook xp.  I don\'t need my pim data on any other computer, so no big loss to me there.

Overall, I\'m happy with this rom, a couple of things I\'d like to see are a real battery meter and wireless extensions.

The ideal to me would be OZ with reliable sync to any desktop pim app.  I can\'t afford to loose that data.  The device becomes an expensive toy otherwise.

The 3.13 has a fix for \'Run as root\' problems in the 3.10 ROM and a potential fix for some IR to mobile phone issues in 3.10.

Is Sharp ROM 3.13 suitable for a UK SL5500 or is it a US version only! If it is a US only version, has anyone patch it for UK timezone ?

I have already upgraded my UK Zaurus to 3.10, before realising it is only meant for US version. So I am not sure if I should revert to version 2.37 or goto 3.13 ?

I have read that UK version was to be available using the 3.13 ROM version ?

I\'ve got a UK SL-5500 and I\'m running 3.13 with no problems - don\'t understand what you mean by the US timezone thing? You can set your timezone to whatever you want? It defaults to New York, but after a bit of playing, you can easily set the home timezone to London.

When the Date & Time app appears on the first boot after a flash, you have to tap the global icon, tap one of the city buttons on the Worldtime screen that appears and select \'Great Britain\' and then \'London\' or \'Belfast\'. Then OK this screen and select London/Belfast from the timezone list. I think the \'Great Britain\' thing tends to catch people out since it\'s usually United Kingdom.
