Gpe 3.5.2 & Media Player
« on: December 14, 2004, 01:53:49 pm »
Hello all,

Does gpe have a media player, say XMMS.  There appears to be dependence issues.  Is it a matter of installing the libraries?

Thanks,
Chuck

it has: gpe-nmf (uses gstreamer), but it's not in the feeds, only in openembedded.
gpe-nmf is a small but cool player. the only drawback is that at the moment the playlist isn't saved.

xmms installs from the feeds, with a little help, but I still can't get it to work:
Code: [Select]
No Qt/Embedded server appears to be running.
If you want to use this program as a server, add the "-qws" command-line option.

Trying to run it as a server doesn't work either.  I didn't think it would work but this this thread does it should.  Is there something I'm missing?

If not what are my alternatives?  I've seen a few references to nmf but I haven't been able to find it anywhere (which makes sense if it's not in the feeds but why isn't it in the feeds?)

I used to have mplayer working from the command line when I was running tkc but I have no idea what I did to get that working.  I do know that simpily installing the mplayer ipk on gpe doesn't seem to be enough but not sure what else I need to do?

Thanks,
Dan

You're using the wrong version (that's the one for Opie).

Try looking in the x11 or gpe sections of the feed, if it's not there then you'll have to try something else (like mpegplayer - iirc)

xmms  doesn't exsist in any of the other feeds.  So, when I saw this I didn't think it would work but thought it wouldn't hurt to try and afterall you guys know a lot more about it then I do.  Thanks for  the help though .

So now what  are my options for  GPE and the 5500?

XMMS: There doesn't seem to be a x11 version.
mplayer:  Doesn't work out of the box and every thread that talks about iends with the answer being use kino.
kino:       It looks as if Kino can't run on the 5500.
nmf:        Not in the feeds and no links to ipk's anywhere.
mpegplayer:  A search of the forums turned up nothing about this...

GPE looks like it has so much potential it would be a shame to have to give up on it because I can't play an mp3.

There are mp3blaster (which I haven't got to work) and mpg321 (never tried that) in the feed, maybe try one of those? As for comfortable usage, maybe you could write an opie-sh script, shouldn't be too complicated...

Cheers
Philipp

P.S.: You could also check the OpenEmbedded build environment and build an xmms for yourself, maybe you can get rid of the opie dependency, or just build nmf yourself...

Edit: Ok, come to think about it, since you run gpe, opie-sh might not be the right idea *G*

From a quick look at the feeds (console feed):

smpeg, madplay, mp3blaster.

I think mpegplay is the binary in smpeg.

This has buggged me for a while...  mplayer can be compiled with a gtk gui. wouldn't it make sense to set OZ/gpe and OZ/e up to do the obvious stuff, like mplayer w/ gtk gui, and xmms w/ gtk gui? (and abiword/gnumeric as in 3.5.1 while I'm at it?)The things exist (xmms gtk can be had for xqt even.) This kinda seems like a no-brainer as far as basic gpe/e (x11) rom development goes.

I suppose now mickeyl will show up and tell me to write a bb file......

somebody has to, and if this stuff still isn't there when I swtch my 6k back to OZ, maybe i'll give it a shot.

adf.

ps. you might try grabbing the xmms off the xqt2 feed (xqt.sourceforge.net/feed-testing) and doing compat on it. I have no idea what will happen, but it might go. You'll probably want the libmad from OZ installed if you do.

Don't worry, I'll save him the time ;-). Try writing a .bb file for them.

In all seriousness I'm not sure why they've not been added (actually they may have been added, I've not looked at the contents of packages recently); once next week's over (lots of work/deadlines) I'll take a look at it (assuming I remember).

It may not be necessary to run compat if the libs which it uses are C rather than C++ based. I don't know.

Right, there's no xmms for X11 in the packages dir, so no-one's added a .bb file for it. I asked on #GPE and there appears to be no reason why it's not there except that no-one's got round to doing it.

Do you want to write the .bb adf? Do you have a working OE setup?

If you don't mind pointing me at a good .bb how-to?  Other than that, it should be the usual mplayer hell

I have a working setup.... haven't used it in a few weeks. I can dust it off easily enough though...

stuff that would need to be considered.

static mplayer?
use the libs provided by oe?
which is likelier to be both repeatable and enduring in oe?

But I'll be happy to give it a shot... I'll pretty surely learn something useful

Before I embark on this though,   is xine ui not also gtk? would it make more sense to go xine, given the mass o xine libs stacked and ready to go  in oe? ( I hate to mention it at the last moment, but I did think about it yesterday....
(I've been redoing my kernel for my 6k, and getting dev-img in hopes of on-board compiling vic for kphone --and hence wasn't on zug)

I assume what we are after in the end is a fairly omnivorous media player for OZ/x11 with a decent gui that will go well in OE?

Well you could give xine a go too.

To start of with I'd grab a basic .bb file which has gtk as a dependency (not sure what though... you could always start with the xmms-embedded .bb file and stip the majority of it out).

Then strip everything out and try with the xmms source from the web. Chances are it won't work - I notice there are lots of patches against xmms-embedded (one of which is called remove-gtk or somesuch - might be a start...).

Same goes for xine, try a really basic one then add stuff as things fail. All good fun ;-)

Does xmms use mplayer as the backend? If so just add it as an RDEPENDS/DEPENDS and don't worry about it (it's already in OE and will be built automagically for you).

With regards to xine - I'm not sure how much patching has gone on to produce these libs, but it may be possible to just alter the parameters passed to configure to produce a GUI. Have a look at the .bb and have a go.

If you need any help/advice then I'm always willing.

Good luck,

Si

P.S. I was thinking of downloading the pdaxrom SDK and looking at the patches and options which it uses to compile xmms - this might be a useful thing to do

There's a media player in OE now for GPE. It's called beepmp (http://www.sosdg.org/~larne/w/BMP_Homepage).

I'm told that new (from OE) versions of mplayer should also work under GPE (as well as opie).
