How To Edit Epwing Dictionary Files
« on: December 18, 2004, 02:05:20 am »
Please tell my to edit EPWING files. I want to be able to add new words. Also write Japanese furigana for the words I don't know.

Is there a way to convert EPWING to text?
And then back again?

At the moment I don't even know how to change the text files into the EPWING format for zten.

I've been looking into how to do it and the only programs I can find are for a Linux system. JIS x 4081 (EPWING) is what I'm searching for but FreePWING comes up. Is there a way the make and edit the files on Windows XP machines. I really don't have enough room on my machine to install Linux and it might cause problems. I have a Japanese machine and can't really read the install instructions.

First of all, EPWING is a special binary dictionary/electronic book format and meant to be read-only (mostly commercial dictionaries but also a few free "dictionaries").  You don't "edit" such files.  What you are probably after is creating your own dictionaries.

FreePWING is a Perl library not a program though a program exists for Windows (ebstudio).

I suggest that you search this forum for a start.  And please keep related questions in one thread and refrain from spreading them over several threads.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

I am getting more than a bit annoyed by the replies to g333 and my own inquiries in on how to create dictionary files in either freepwing or any other format what works on the Z (on a windows platform).

Of course they are designed as "read-only". That doesn't mean that one should not be able to edit the data in some way, shape, or fashion.

Several people (not only on this issue) keep posting "search the site first".
I have read just about every &$!# posting on this site and sorry, but I haven't seen one that shows me how to do squat with my windows machine.

I would like to see requests such as this replied to with where to find information, not
"look at the postings". If you know there is information on the site, SHOW ME WHERE

I have been more successful with zbedic format as there is an explanation of the layout of the files. The problem is that the files are compressed or unix formatted and I have no working example of a database to start from.

It would be a dream to have a simple text file version of  either format to play with.

Just my 2 cents.

p.s. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night...

I changed the extension of the
en-0.9.0.dic.dz
file to
en-0.9.0.dic.gz

This way I can open the file with WinRAR

This an example of the dictionary format. By the way, I just wrote this, it is not Princeton University's example.

 Japanese
{s}{ps}n{/ps}{ss}a lauguage that is based on kanji, katakana and hiragana{/ss}{/s}

I would copy and paste the file but it is Princeton University's work.

If we all work together we can come up with something great

I tried to open and re-gzip a dic file for Zbedic but it didn't work. I didn't even change the text file.
