Bricked Sl5500?
« on: December 18, 2004, 08:38:53 pm »
I put OZ 3.5.2 on my Z SL5500, and followed the installation instructions on openzaurus.org. After I hit the combo C-D-FullReset, I saw the battery light and mail light turn on, then go out after a few minutes. Then, after replacing the battery lid and switching to 'normal operation' on the battery door, it doesn't turn on. I tried it again, same result. I'm using a SanDisk 128MB CF card for this. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you push the reset button again after the lights went off?

You also have to remove the cf and sd cards after a flash of OZ for the first reboot.

I did hit reset after the lights went out, but I didn't take the SD card out before trying to turn it on. I'll try that and tell how it turns out, thanks.

Nope, nothing still, even after I took the cards out of both slots. I can press the D+P combo, and that lights up the mail and battery, but nothing else. Anything else?

that once happened to me, but i just reflashed again and all was fine!  very often, i've thought i've pressed full reset but it hasn't pushed properly, that could be the problem.
I reckon you should try flashing again and then pressing the reset button again, but ensure that it engages fully.

By 'engages fully', do you mean hold it down for a while or something? I'll try it, it is pretty hard to know whether it works or not :S.

Aaak! I just had the same thing happen to me on an SL-5000D - Same procedure, but with a Sandisk 256mb CF. I prepared the zImage and initrd.bin on the card (24+8 zImage), pushed the C+D+reset combo. The 2 lights came on for a few minutes, and then went out. I turned it back to normal operation and... nothing. Since then I've removed all the cards, removed the battery, pushed full reset again, and still nothing.

Brick!

I re-did the files on the CF, and tried to reflash, but the C+D+reset doesn't do anything - no lights, no response whatsoever...

I removed the battery, I'm going to let it sit overnight and see what happens in the morning, but I'm a little worried for my poor collie...

Help!

If you use a zImage & initrd.bin you shouldn't be able to permanently brick your Z.

A couple of you have said that the lights came on and stayed on, this means that the ROM flashed.

Have you tried holding the on/off button down for a bit longer? My collie sometimes needs me to hold it down for a few seconds, or have a few goes before it boots (and when it boots, the backlight doesn't come on straight away - tilt the screen and see if there's any text scrolling by).

Well, I just tried many attempts to get it to come on - it's definitely not powering up. I haven't seen a single light since both lights went out after flashing. I think it did successfully flash, it seemed to take an appropriate length of time. But however it turns itself off after flashing, it really turned itself *off*. D+P+Reset does nothing. C+D+Reset does nothing.

I guess I don't understand - if we flashed the zImage and initrd.bin - isn't there a bootloader that's left intact in that process? Why isn't it at least powering up? Is there any lower-level access to the device? I think I can get my hands on serial sync cable, would that help? Are there any key combinations other than C+D and D+P?

I think I found the problem for me: I didn't make sure that the images were downloaded fully, and they were corrupted! My zImage file was 189KB when it's supposed to be 889KB.

I checked mine for the right sizes before flashing, but maybe there should be md5 signatures provided so we could check integrity before flashing... At any rate, mine's deader than a doornail - I can't get it to even light up to reflash.

It's completely dead to the world... when it's plugged it doesn't even charge. Maybe 256mb was too big of a card... blew it's mind maybe. I verified that the sharp read the cf card first, that's where I verified the file sizes. Fresh FAT format, readable, etc... I just don't understand how flashing can "break" it so thorougly. I mean, it won't even *try* to come on.

Guess I shoulda just stuck with the old Sharp ROM...

What options do I have now? JTAG? Not that I have the equipment, but is there anything else I can try?

When I've had problems, reflashing with a known-good Sharp OSPACK file has worked.  Also, I had semi-bricked my 5500 when installing a previous Hentges release because I thought the zImage and initrd.bin files I downloaded had the gz extension appended and simply renamed them.  D'oh...  After a bit of confusion, I finally realized what I was doing and decompressed the real files and did a successful flash.

Good luck!

Hey, you guys... I called Sharp this morning, and the guy was very helpful. He didn't even act like I had committed a major evil by trying to use OpenZaurus. Anyway, after I explained to him that I didn't have a CF reader or any way to reflash it, he told me that all he knew of to do would be to send it into them & have them reflash it for me. Of course my next question was $. According to him, No charge.

I bought my 5500 SECOND HAND - there was NO WARRANTY. It seems like Sharp just likes being helpful... or something. Tell me how everything goes....
