Need to install a browser on my Zaurus.
« on: January 06, 2004, 04:46:22 pm »
I am extreme newbie with a Zaurus, so please bear with me.  I don\'t mind doing research, reading up on what to do, and trial and error.  However, I could use a little help.

I have installed the OZ rom on my Zaurus 5500 per the instructions at openzaurus.org.  Everything went well and so far I am enjoying the os.  I have a 128mb sd card to which I have moved my /home directory.  I have an Ambicom wifi card which seems to be working, as the wifi configuration screens shows that it is picking up a signal from my wap.    Here\'s the deal, though.  I have no idea if I can connect to the internet with it.  OZ doesn\'t come with a browser, and I don\'t know how to install one which I think may kind of keep me from installing anything else.  If you need any details, please let me know.  All I really want to know right now is how to install Konqueror(I\'ve downloaded the ipk to my laptop) and then to connect to the internet.

Thanks for any input and suggestions you might have.

I\'d recommend Jeode rather than konq. (Oops, I meant Opera)

You will find it in one of the app zip files for example this one:

http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...eq=getit&lid=54

You may need to mess around with some symlinks to get it (specifically the icons) working (but you might not need to, I\'ve had it installed for ages), if so post a reply and we\'ll sort it.

Thanks for answering.  Do I download it to my desktop, put it on a cf card and then put that in my Zaurus?  Thanks.

That indeed seem to be the case.

Hold up, Alvis, I think he meant Opera. I don\'t think Jeode, the Java virtual machine, would get you very far; at least, not without finding a java browser. So, yes, grab the Opera ipk and install it from a CF card. Good luck!

Thanks for the link to all those packages.  Anyway...just tried to install Opera but wasn\'t successful.  I have my /home and /opt directories on an sd card, which is also where I told the graphical package manager to install Opera.  Here is the output:

Dealing with package /mnt/cf/opera6_1.5.4_arm.ipk
pkg_info_preinstall_check: updating arch priority for each package
pkg_info_preinstall_check: update file owner list
Cannot find package /mnt/cf/opera6_1.5.4_arm.ipk.
Check the spelling or perhaps run \'ipkg update\'
configuring unpacked packages
  writing status file
hash_table[pkg-hash] n_buckets=1423 n_elements=214 max_conflicts=2 n_conflicts=12
hash_table[file-hash] n_buckets=1423 n_elements=2098 max_conflicts=68 n_conflicts=567
hash_table[obs-file-hash] n_buckets=1423 n_elements=0 max_conflicts=0 n_conflicts=0

Creating symbolic links for /mnt/cf/opera6_1.5.4_arm.ipk.
Could not open :/usr/lib/ipkg/info/opera6.list

Now I\'m not sure why it couldn\'t find the file, since I picked it out of the list of packages the Zaurus read on the CF card.

if /home is on the sd card, then you should say install to internal meory.

it will then install to the sd card as it is /home is mounted there.

This should work if your sd card is formatted to ext2fs.

If your sd card is still fat, then this is maybe your problem.  Fat does not support symbolic links and can cause intstalls that require them to fail.

No dice.  It does the same thing whether I attempt to install it to internal memory or sd.  On a positive note, I was able to install Asteroids.

Yes, sorry it was late.

You could always install it by hand (though I\'m surprised as I was able to install it using the ipk).

How are your sd and cf cards formatted?

Well, for now I have decided to go with the Cacko-rom.  Everything is working, even Opera.  Working on getting my Z to sync in Linux now.  Thanks for all the help.
