Install Problem
« on: January 02, 2005, 09:29:40 pm »
OK, I've been using the cacko ROM and pretty happy except for the syncing, so it's time to try out OpenZaurus. But I can't seem to install it. I think part of the problem is the complete lack of documentation. So I'll tell everybody what I've done, and maybe somebody can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

OK, first of I have downloaded opie-image.rootfs.img, updater.sh, and zimage.bin.C750 from http://oz.hentges.net/mirror/oz3.5.2/c7x0,c8x0/ and renamed the files to initrd.bin, updater.sh, and zImage respectfully. I placed them on my CF card and did the appropriate things. Things appear to progress normally, but all I get after booting is a disabled window bigger than the screen going on about search parameters. I'm kind of disappointed because usually when flashing goes bad it's much more spectacular.

So, any ideas? Are there any restrictions on the size of the flash partition needed? Is the root image really 14 Megs, or what?

Interesting, I have another problem in the same way.  Moved from Cacko to OpenZaurus, everything installs fine, until it gets to "starting opie" or similar, and then I get an empty black screen.

My theory was the same, that it might be related to flash size.  Maybe 27 just won't work.

Yeah, I bumped the partition size up to 45Megs, and it appears to install and boot normally, but I get a sideways welcome screen inviting me to tap on the screen. Unfortunately tapping on the screen doesn't appear to do much.

I have no idea how, but I got it working. I had been using the pdaxrom installer to try different partition sizes from 16 Megs to 47 Megs without luck. But then before I gave up I tried one last time with the Cacko installer (after installing cacko 1.22) on a 27 Meg partition and it just worked. I didn't think it would ever work because no matter what I did the installer seemed to stop at around 60%.

But, now that I have it installed at first blush it looks pretty good. My wifi worked once I figured out how to configure it properly. It's too late tonight, but tomorrow I will investigate syncing with my Linux boxen. Can somebody please answer some questions for me please:

 * What, if any, is the magic partition size? Am I wasting space somehow using a 27 Meg partition verses what I assume ought to be 16 Megs?
 * What are my options for syncing with Linux? I assume QTopia desktop, but any particular version? What about MultiSync?

Despite what it may say on the OZ website (I've requested that it's changed), the files should be named: initrd.bin, updater.sh, and zImage.bin

Why am I not surprised the undocumented problem is so easily fixed. OK, I'll try it tonight. I guess opie likes the cacko kernel well enough to run (until I find some relatively random thing it doesn't) but didn't like the pdaxrom kernel at all.

But what what is the deal with the partition sizes? Does it matter with opie?

And another thing, one would expect some sort of failure, or at least errror message, if one of two critical files apparently were not present, right?

The idea is that you can flash the rom image and kernel seperately, hence the lack of flahing lights, etc.

If you watch carefully during the flashing process you'd probably have seen that the kernel flash process didn't start.

Not sure about the partition sizes. I've tried pdaXrom and flashed back with a variety of sizes. All I think is that you do need two partitions.

Yup, looks like everything is OK now. Thanks for the help. I just synced with Qtopia 1.7 and I plan on trying Evolution at work tomorrow.
