Cosmo Communicator - CoDi / Re: CoDi is a broken feature at this point
« on: April 29, 2021, 01:16:44 pm »
I took a break from the cosmo for a good while, after my codi self destructed under its own glass again somewhow.  This entire thread did make me laugh.  While i dont agree with the term Broken Garbage, if you take a step back from your association with teh purchase and look at the issues posted just in this thread alone, its very hard to make the argument that its working "as intended".  All things considered, even within our own little group, tribalism still sprouts its wings and shows its ugly face.  I for one came here hoping planet would have ironed out a lot of the annoyances by now.  It seems like they've mostly moved onto the next device though :(:(

My CoDi LCD broke also without any signs of damage on the glass. Planet computers would charge me 125£ + shipping to UK to replace it. If only I could get replacement part somehow, I would definitely do it myself.

Its happened twice to me.  First time i sent it in to planet, they charged me 150$ + I had to pay for 70$ for shipping, and they sent it back 9 months later.   The oled cracked again with teh glass intact, while it was in the box in storage.  I'm done with Planet.

New products and alternatives / A PSION-like keyboard for the PinePhone
« on: January 27, 2020, 10:42:13 am »
I'm very hyped about the pinephone.  I think it was Alexi Pistonrod in the telegram that turned me onto it in the first place.  Enough to cancel my preorder of the Librem 5.  There is a lot to like about the pinephone, though preliminary videos look just as bad as the librem for current performance.  As far as it + the potential upcoming keyboard attachment competing wiht the cosmo, In some ways I can definitely see it being a superior solution, however, the allwinner chipset looks vastly slower than the cosmos P70.  I guess you trade off that speed for openness and control to varying degrees.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Configuring byobu (in termux) on Cosmo

Btw, for escape works alt-space, in mc or vim.

OK, alt-escape does work for VIM, thanks. But still is there a way to make the physical Escape key working as a normal Escape key? I have already bugreported it to Planet as it looks to me as the Cosmo keyboard driver problem as vtshowkeys also cannot catch the Escape key (and it quits from Termux to laucher).

As a heavy termux user, i find escape working as escape very necessary on this device to really get the touch type workflow going, especially in vim.  I solved this annoyance by editing termux.properties, and setting the back-key property to escape.  This only fixes termux, enabling escape to function correctly in vim and other console apps, as well as no long annoyingly minimizing termux. outside of this escape as back is incredibly convenient in android.

hope this is useful for your needs as well.

Cosmo Communicator - Linux / Andronix brings Linux to the Cosmo
« on: December 15, 2019, 02:18:30 am »
Something is better than nothing in most  cases, but I think for the majority who are and have been interested in this line for the multiboot, Termux and other chroot style solutions are far too primitive to be anything more than a placeholder, except where the specific toolset fits the need.  Most of us have active Termux installations, its far from a substitute for even Gemian TP2, which while having its faults, is still vastly superior.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Scam?

Just read through that site - it sounds like Janko was thrown into things after fundraising was complete and two founders left. There was probably only so much he could do. Given that the Gemini was successful, and I have both of my Cosmos in front of me (and they're amazing), it seems weird to continue to punish him for a failed business venture.

Also, fundraising through sites like Indiegogo or KickStarter is like investing in a company, it's NOT like buying a product. If you invest $500 in a company and they go bankrupt that's a risk you take. If you buy a product on eBay for $500, and they don't deliver it to you, then you have a legal claim you can make. I don't understand how people don't seem to understand this.

People are stupid.  Read the indiegogo cosmo forums for a taste.     I really hope that specific demographic doesn't find its way here in droves.  We've already suffered a few now and in the gemini days.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Camera
« on: December 11, 2019, 12:16:42 am »
Personally, the benefit imo for using OpenCamera is mainly for the rudimentary EIS.  The Noise reduction and HDR modes in API2 also tend to produce better looking photos to my eye, but where you see a day and night difference is in video.  We really need a working GCam port TBH.  OpenCamera has some great options, but I'd trade it all in for google image processing.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Poor battery life
« on: December 05, 2019, 04:27:59 pm »
Turn off the cover display (not sleep, completely disable it using the quicktoggle or cosmo settings).   Until the firmware is updated, there is a serious problem with the display.  Doing this has more than doubled my battery life, and significantly improved my standby time.  I no longer need to charge every night on light days.

Hi All,

I see the Planet Computers LEDison app installed on the Cosmo Communicator. It seems to be an app best suited for the Gemini PDA because it does not have the front display panel. I am curious to know if the LEDIson is useful for Cosmo Communicator owners and any information that could explain how to best use this utility on the Cosmo.

Cheers!
LEDison emulation was an advertised feature, but doesn't appear to work at all, or properly currently.  The option is in the cosmo settings menu.

To a greater degree, I guess the front screen sort of makes ledison superfluous. You could argue that from a distance, you can see the LEDs better than read the small screen I suppose. I haven't enabled/configured ledison and don't really miss it.

Ledison emulation was a huge selling point for me.  the LED array on the original gemini was very useful, and expressive.  Sadly it doesn't work yet (if ever.), and doesn't look like its going to work the way it was originally pitched (simulated light bar on the oled screen, now seems it will only use the 3 of the  4 front LEDs).  Yes, im a little pissy pants about it, but if I truly am the only person in the Gemini family that fell in love with the LED array and ledison, then so be it. :-D

Cosmo Communicator - CoDi / Unresponsive and Black Front Cover Display
« on: December 04, 2019, 12:13:42 am »

Unexpectedly, the external display went black and became unresponsive. This occurred after I decreased the brightness level and a few hours passed.

Expectedly, the external screen initially turned off.  However, after the Cosmo was off for a few hours, I pushed the left toggle button and the external display was still dimmed but expectedly showed the 8 circular app icons. I could not get the external display to return to show the time, date, etc.

I then opened the Cosmo and Android was working fine. I then closed Android and the external screen was black and the two LEDs in the toggle switch on the front cover were a solid red (not blinking). Pushing the toggle switch buttons or the silver colored button on top of the Cosmo did nothing.

After rebooting the Cosmo, the front cover external display worked as expected.

yep.  The External display has been freezing on early recipients and some testers in earllier firmware versions.   Use the quicktile toggle on off to reset it, or you can  hold the silver button  for 10 seconds to reboot just the outer  display.  Its an annoying bug, hopefully it will be fixed in the upcoming rotation firmware update.

Private chat on matrix.  I can't make his contact public.  Im not aware of anything public other than the wiki and the announcements.  Even sending bug reports is currently not streamlined.  Stay tuned for updates through the official channels.  If i hear anything particularly promising, Ill definitely share it.
