Like I said before: audio and video codecs run on the DSP.  See http://dspgateway.sourceforge.net/ for some more info

Thanks 'Koen'.  I sorta meant the reference to the software being done right as a nod to your comment (I probably should have been more explicit).

But many thanks for the link...I was curious what this 'DSP' thing was and that link was quite informative.

Don't get me wrong, I know raw comparative numbers don't always tell the whole story.  Case in point RISC vs. CISC.  And I know the slower/older processor probably saves money and prolongs battery life.

But as far as it being 'anemic'...well, I suppose that discriptive term says more about ME than it does about the processor (basically, I'm insatiable when in comes to clock ticks   ).

It's definitely and interesting looking device...

 Thanks again!

I saw this thing on engadget as well.  It's interesting alright.  It's intro price blows any Zaurus's debut out of the water.

The lack of CF or SD is kinda worrisome though.  I would guess most of us are already fairly heavily invested in SD and CF cards, but for this thing we'll have to go get RS-MMC...

The anemic processor is another area to watch, a NEW handheld debuting at only 220mhz in a world where 300mhz - 624mhz is the order of the day seems an odd choice. But the SL-5500 can play AVI and MPEG passibly, so if this thing is tweaked well in it's software it should do fine...

As for the keyboard...I agree. *I* would want one, probably anyone reading this thread would want one, but the target demographic for this device doesn't seem to be the shade tree hacker and hobbyist that is likely any of *us*.  It's more of the point and shoot crowd, so I can see how the keyboard got 86'd on the design table.

I still don't see though, why Nexio style KB's aren't more popular.  If the design were slightly improved (I'd say add a foldout stand on the back of the unit so it can stand up while the keyboard is in use without the docking station)it could work well. And it could be sold as an accessory so the stylus lovers wouldn't have to pay for it if they didn't want to.

I suppose an OQO style slider would work too, but the unit would have to be much thicker...

All said, it does still look like an interesting device to keep one's eye on...

I'l pick one up when they hit $100 on eBay 1 - 3 years from now depending on their success.  I could leave it in the glovebox of my car and always have something to do...

Also, I agree with the earlier comment...once wimax or whatever ubiquitous wireless standard finally gets implemented, devices such as these will be as common as cell phones (seen anyone use one of those today ?) and it's a smart move on Nokia's part to make a few little inroads into that market and test out the waters...

About the comment concerning this devices being targeted more at the western market.

 DEFINITELY....

I was mildly shocked to notice that NO asian languages are to be natively supported.
So I guess this is yet more evidense that this is not designed to compete with the Zaurus.

 Yet...

Accessories / LinkSYS CF Wireless G card
« on: May 23, 2005, 12:26:53 pm »
It would be a cool boasting feature...to have a wireless 'G' card, but I've never seen regular 'G' actually go anywhere near 54mbps.  Well, ok, yeah, I've gotten my router and laptop to 'report' 54mbps, but it didn't really seem to be going that fast, and this was at ranges of under 30ft, and with a direct line of sight (ie circumstances where  I could have used a cable and gotten 100 - 1000 mbps).  I've seen it to be more like 22mbps top end in most indoor circumstances, ie with a wall or two in the way.  True, that's twice what vanilla 'B' will get you, but as intimated by others, on a PDA/PMT it's probably not going to make too huge a difference...

Unless of course 'G' based cards are somehow inately more power efficient...anyone ???

 Just my opinion...

I voted wifi.  I don't have any bluetooth enabled devices, and 'the net is vast and infinite...'

Heehee, I'd stop watching GITS every other day, but I'm afraid I'd just go back to my Akira habit.

The trouble with all of this speculation is that it turns me into a permanent fence sitter....
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=80440\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yeah, I get into that rut to.  Always waiting for the specs (PDA, PC, cars, GF, whatever I'm lookin' to acquire at the time...) to go just  a *little* higher so I can maximize my aquisition value.

The conclusion I've come to is that you can NEVER be on the cutting edge unless you are some kind of Beta tester...and then you quite often don't get to own anything or you get more bugs for your trouble.  What I've decided is that you just have to define your needs, pony up to fill them, and don't worry TOO much about a better value coming along.  It could (in fact it always does eventually), but so long as your needs ARE met you'll be fine.

Case in point, my own Zaurus upgrade dilemma.  Do I need a new $500 C1000 ? or can I get buy with a $350 used C860 ?  What if something better comes along BEFORE I go back to Japan ?

I've just come to the conclusion that a C1000 is what I really want, but a C860 WILL do everything I'll need it to do so I'll just go for whichever deal is the better value when I've finally amassed the cash.  I really would prefer the C1000 though, the keyboard is one of the biggest draws to the C series for me, and the C1000's looks vastly superior...

As for a *new* model...yeah, I think if it's going to be significantly different it will be in the communication area.  Integrated wifi or something more voice oriented.  Perhaps even with a more Yopy-like vertical clamshell form factor to make it closer to a phone replacement.

It doesn't really tempt me though...I can't think of any feature that could be reasonably placed in a PDA that *I* would be willing to pay $100 - $300 more for that the C1000 doesn't have.

But I like everyone else looks forward to continuing to watch the Z's evolution...

Accessories / Mmc Vs. Sd
« on: May 10, 2005, 01:00:12 pm »
From what I've heard, the Z's are all native MMC card devices and run SD cards in some type of emmulation mode.  Is there any kind of performance penaulty for this ?

I'm looking to outfit my forthcoming C1000 suite with a 512mb 'SD' card of some type.  In that size range the MMC card prices I'm seeing are bout 20% to 30% cheaper than SD. I should probably research (and likely will) the specific differences between the two in general, but as far as the Z's go is there any reason not to buy MMC ?

 Thanks all!

(I will point out as well that @ 1GB the prices of the two formats appear to be about the same...)

 Arigato Tetron-san!

Ah...Softmap 5 in Akihabara.  You were there last fall huh ? Tell me, did they ever get around to wiping up the gallon or two of drool I must have left behind there last spring ?

More of exactly the kind of user perspective I love when I'm making a purchase choice.

(I know the format of the respones I'm going to write is usually indicitive of a rebutal. Rest assured I am simply responding in an organized manner)

"The only difference between the C760 and C860 is software and I think the color of the case. Apparently the C860 has some Japanese<-->English translation software..."

This is actually a real concern of mine, as I'll be in Japan for a year trying to learn to speak Japanese (actually I already can sort of speak it, but I never get any practice so I'm abysmal at it.  I will now though...).  But as you say it has some built in stuff, and  Effy-CJK 3.0 can be had for less than $50.  So I suppose that is a blow for the 760...

Quote
The differences between the C760 and the C1000...slightly newer CPU...a USB host controller (yay!) and the Sharp ROM uses a 2.6 kernel instead of the old 2.4.18 kernel.

The extra 16mhz... 'meh'...the improved instruction set however is a bit of a draw.  The usb host is (in 80's jargon) RAD...but I honestly don't think I'd use it much (I could be wrong).  The improved kernal is also a bit of a draw, can the stock rom from the C1000 be applied to the C760 ?

Quote
When you get it, must-have accessories are a case (obviously)...

I already have *most* of the accessories I really need.  The headphone remote has always been tempting, but as I prepared to sell my 5500 I picke dup an RCA Lyra for cheap off ebay and I've been using that lately for my MP3's.  It's not at all competetive with even mediocre stand alone MP3 players out there, but I'm getting used to it, so I probably won't cave on that.  I have my WIFI card (unless someone knows of a Kismet compatible CF card with an MC Card jack...) and I have a 1GB CF Flash card for movies.  For apps and some MP3s I've got one or two 256mb SD cards lying around.  If they cheapen down in the next few months I'll go ahead and pick up a 512mb. The case you mention however I will defenitely be on the lookout for.  I'll probably also pick up a Semson battery extender since they are cheap and compact.

Ok, about the C3000 form factor:... it is distinctly heavier than the C760. Not in a "more solid" sort of way, in a "more bricklike ...Instead of the arrows being the usual upside-down "T" as on the C760, the C3000 has a circular D-pad with the "Ok" button in the middle...

Most people seem to like the C1000 keyboard for it's less membraneous feel, and if true I would prefer that as well. I'd also head the beveled edges of the Cx000 duo give them a tighter feel when closed.  Weight doesn't bother me too much.  Kind of ironic, I vastly prefer the d-pad concept to the seperate arrow buttons, but if I get into gaming a bitmore and the center button does something it could get mightey annoying indeed.  Good points though...lots to consider in that paragraph...

Quote
Quibbling aside, the biggest factor in deciding between the C760 and C1000 will probably be your budget -- keep in mind that in addition to buying the Zaurus itself, expect to spend at least another $100-$200 pimping it out with accessories :-)

Well, I haven't bought anything yet.  I'd be interested to see how others who maybe own both respond to your notes here. But you are right, bottom line price is big factor and I am not rich.  If I would simply walk into a store tommorrow and chose between  the two and the 760 were $350 while the C1000 was $600. I'd probably go with the 760.  I'll just have to see.  I've got so many toys that I can't play with them all , so a bunch are going to eBay within the week.  I estimate I should get anywhere from $300 to maybe $700 the market being as fickle as it is.  That will play a big role in what I can spend on this purchase.

And yeah...as soon as I have cash in hand, even though I say I have almost everything I need...the pimping out will likely ensue..

One other minor note might be that if I buy the 760 in japan I'll have to anglocize it myself...not *too* hard based on the internet instructions I see, but one more thing to think about...

Many thanks 'Tetron' for some mighty tasty food for thought !

Oh yeah, which battery does the 760 have stock (see the mental pimping-out has already begun)?

Accessories / Cf Wifi With Mc Card Connector ?
« on: May 09, 2005, 02:53:33 pm »
I could have sworn a year or two ago I saw one or two CF wifi cards that had a little external antenna jack built into'em (MC Card type I believe).  Anyone know of any models sporting this handy little feature.

Perhaps even more important, anyone know of a Zaurus/Kismet compatible model ?

Software / Network Utility Favorites
« on: May 07, 2005, 07:06:35 pm »
(Not too many bites on this on in 'Network and Security' so I'm given it a shot here.  If this constitutes some type of prohibited multi-posting I apologize and ask that this post be removed.)

I've spent the last few months trying to gather networking utilities and such for the WinCE world. But now I'm selling all my CE handhelds and switching entirely to Linux for my pocket computing needs (considering the same for my PC...one of them anyway).

I plan on purchasing a C1000, and right off the bat I know that I want Kismet and NMAP to be on there. As so many people here are Zaurus and Linux savy I was just hoping to get some comments on peoples favorite networking and security utilities for the Zaurus. Particularly on the standard QTopia Rom as I am not quite '1ee7' enough to mess with the other roms...yet

(Though I must admit I find pdaXrom very interesting)

 Thanks all!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Internal Cf On C1000
« on: May 07, 2005, 07:00:48 pm »
Second question:

I've been told there are instructions somehwere on this board for the extraction of the C3000's internal hard drive for the purposes fo replacing it with a CF Flash memory card.  Can anyone etll me where that page is, or is finding it some kind of initiation I must undergo before I am truly 'one of us'   ?

 First question:

I am planning to purchase a C1000 in the near future.  Is it possible to install a CF flash card where the HDD would be in a C3000 ?  And if so, has anyone done this and are there instructions available anywhere online ?

 Thanks All!

Accessories / Newbie (sorta) With C1000 Questions

Good stuff All!

 Ragnorak:

  This thread,

 https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11839

(with plenty of links) discusses the potential use of an external PSP battery for Zaurii of all denominations.

The gist is that since the PSP aparently uses the same internal power system as the Zs most of it's power accesorries should work (experiment at your own peril  ).  But as you will see there are some concerns about the voltage.  In that thread I posted a link for a battery pack that runs on AA's.  With 4 2000mAh NiMhs I've gotten a fair amount of continuous runtime with the 5500, though I have a different model  (basically it seems to drain the AA's first and then the internal batt). I kinda like it because in a REAL pinch you can almost always get alkalines. At $7 bucks it'll put extra juice in your pocket on the cheap...

Instructions for replacing the HDD, eh ?  How about ADDING one to the C1000 ?  Is the CF interface there ? I wouldn't mind installing a 512mb CF in there and just leaving it. I'll check it out...

 Thanks Ragnorak and others!

 Keep'em coming !

- I'm also probably going to get at least a 1GB high-speed SD card, more if I can afford it, meaning I waiting long enough for a bigger one to be in my price range.  (snicker)
- A second battery and separate charger are must-haves.  I have them for my 5500, and it's just *too* convenient to A) have that extra battery in case it's needed and  be able to charge the second one and still carry the unit around.

- GPS would be sweet...

- My battery says EA-BL11 right on it ... 3.7v 1800 maH.  I know it runs this C1k far longer than the 5500 ever ran.  Just icing on the cake...

 Annnnd...thank you Ragnorak

Good thoughts and first impressions.  Very encouraging.  What's this about an "extra internal CF slot" ???  Can you actually put a CF card in where the HDD of the C3000 was removed ???

Maybe I won't sell that 512mb card with the Jornada after all...

As for the D-Link card, I've never really had trouble with it.  It's been one of the most versitile CF cards I've seen...nearly everything runs it.  However, my first stand alone WIFI AP was a D-link, as is my current internet router with integrated AP.  And I know D-link went to great lengths to get their items (the 'Air' series) to work well with each other, perhaps they have done so to the exclusion of other product lines, thought I don't recall any problems during that brief COMPAQ IPAq wifi router period.

I've been pretty satisfied with most of the D-Link prodcts I've bought.  But, in the 'Deals and Great Z Buys' theres a thread about a really good coupon offer for a Pretec wifi card.  Like $23 new.  The company seems to be out of stock right now, but the threads been actively being posted to since '04 up through february '05, so they might have'em again at the low price.

Second battery and charger....hmm...sounds expensive.  Sane and logical...but expensive.  I have a 4AA battery extender for now.  I think I'll wait and see how the PSP powerbrick thing plays out.  Though I do like having the unit self contained and without things hangin' off of it, if I'm using the Z for 2 hours plus...I'm probably sitting down doing something...so I can mange.

I use Otterboxes if my stuff is getting packed in larger lugage or if I'm not planning to use it between but only at my destinations.  Otherwise I basically always were either cargo pants or my travelers vest. I may not buy a case either...

As for GPS, I keep seeing two brands on eBay go for less than $100.  'Globalsat' and 'Holux'.  Don't know if they play nice with the Z, but someone else might (anyone?).

Thanks for your thoughts and experiences!

General Discussion / Opinions On Movie Watching On C1000

The movie playback on the 1k/3k series is a little rough at the moment, due to it being newer hardware. That being said, a newer mplayer was just released in the last couple of days that seems to work pretty well, with reports of the ability to playback 640x480 files.

The Cxk series has better potential for video playback because of the WMMX instructions in the newer processor. It will certainly be able to match the 860 given a little time. The video player is currently under very active development.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=78605\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

 Thanks again Kahm!

I take this to mean that currently the best video OVERALL is to be found on the C860, correct ?

Well...I've seen vid playback on a stock SL-5500, IT was better than my Jornada.  Is the C1000 in stock trim (ie with the embedded player) at least better than the SL-5500 ?
