C1000/3x00 General discussions / Casual Association...
« on: February 15, 2006, 06:41:17 am »
Has anyone yet devised a way to easily associate a Zaurus C-xx00 with a newly discovered  AP ?

As I troll around Japan (and this will likely continue when I return to the US) there are indeed many unsecured access points (particularly in the bigger cities).  But its kind of a pain to have to scan via Wellenreiter, jot down the pertinent info (either on the Z or a napkin or something) and then have to create a whole new wifi setup.  NOTE!  I am very glad I CAN do that though.  And all those who made that possible (Maslovsky (as I am a very content Cacko rom user), and those who create Wellenreiter) have my deepest thanks.  But it would be nice to have it automated.
I know the best answer to this dilemma is to code such an app/utility myself, but my coding skills in Linux are very limited (as of today anyway, I'm workin' on it...) so I just thought  I'd check and see if anyone had already mashed such up.  I know I'm not the only one who would like a 'site survey' feature...

Second, and somewhat related question, someone created an ipk called somthing alogn the lines of 'slapa$$' a while ago for the 5500.  As I recall it enabled one to associate fairly automatically with open APs that were detected by Kismet (ar was it Wellenreiter ?).  Anyway, any chance this works on the C1000 ?

Thanks all, and I apologize if this topic is addressed in another thread.  I did look beforehand, but couldn't find a similar enough topic.

 Thanks again !

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Anywhere I Can Download Stick Drivers ?
« on: December 04, 2005, 02:19:40 am »
In the all the rush and mishigas of packing for my move to Japan, I went and forgot to throw in the original factory CDs that came with my C-1000.

Surprise surprise, I'm busy as he!! over here and I need to impress my multimedia and web browsing device (yes my C-1000) into service as a PDA becase I can't keep track of all the stuff I gotta do.

I downloaded Qtopia desktop in the hopes of being able to synch between my laptop and my Z, but I never loaded the USB drivers...which are aparently on the CD.

I've scoured the web a bit, but either through chance or stupidity, I haven't been able to find anywhere that I can download the contents of the CD from.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

 Any help is greatly appreciated.

 Thanks!

General Discussion / Tkcphone With Gizmoproject...doable ?
« on: October 29, 2005, 11:45:15 pm »
Well, I was up till about 2am this morning trying to get the demo of tkcPhone to work on my C-1000.  I'm not exactly sure what results I had (it was late, I was getting frustrated, and I had an ample supply of beer...).  Basically I got it to say that a STUN2 request was sent (using settings for SJPHONE for PocketPCs I found in GizmoProjects knowledgebase) but I'm not exactly sure that means the client actually connected to my GizmoProject account.  I have CallOut credit, but it gave me an error and said it was not configured for 'Land' calling when I tried to dial a PSTN number.  And since it WAS late, and I don't have many friends, I didn't know anyone I could test a PC to PC type call with.  But I did discover a few test numbers online that will supposedly echo back everything you say or just say YOU number back to you.  They didn't seem to work.

Since this is only the demo, I'm hesitant to write off the full version (since it only costs $20), but I don't really want to purchase it just to continue testing (well I'm not quite that desperate anyway).  Also, the demo I am running was written for the SL-5500, though it seems to be functioning on my C-1000.

 I don't know what's going on...

I know many others have been experimenting with such as VOIP, and I know people have gotten Net2Phone and iConnect to work, but I'd rather stick with companies that offer prepaid plans instead of monthly contracts.

So if anyone can offer any advice or experiences with tkcPhone and/or GizmoProject on the zaurus line, I'd love to hear about it.

 Thanks!

UPDATE:  Though I definitely have not done what can be considered a success call to PSTN, I was fiddling around with this a bit more and I have since logged into my GizmoPRoject account and noticed that whole bunch of the tests I ran from the Zaurus actually were logged in my Gizmo account.  So it looks like it may be possible after all...seems that TKC phone was able to authenticate anyway even if a real connection was never established...

I'm gonna continue experimentsing, and I also got a Net2Phone account, but I'm gonna fiddle with it a bit more before I buy PSTN time for it...

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Request Gps Recommendations
« on: October 22, 2005, 10:44:59 pm »
I've browsed around this form in it's many parts and didn't find a definitive recommendation for a CF GPS card to use with my C-1000.  So, at the risk of duplicating such a thread that I simply overlooked, I'm gonna ask if anyone out there can suggest such a card for the C-1000 ?  I'm currently using the basic Sharp rom, but fully intend to lock Cacko when it gets released.

Japanese maps are a definite plus as well, since I'm currently living in Japan...and frequently getting lost (though I do usally end up encountering cool stuff anyway...).

So if anyone has some info, or even just wants to say 'Wake up idiot, this and been asked and answerd in thread XXXXX !' I'd sure be glad for the help...

 Thanks all!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Spaces In My Ssid...
« on: October 14, 2005, 03:27:50 am »
Anyone know how I can connect to an 'infrastructure' wifi netowork that has spaces in it's SSID ?  I keep trying to configure it manually, but my C1000 won't let me type in the spaces (and you might have noticed I even tried ascii code).  tyoing the correct ssid in the text editor and then using cut and paste didn't  work either.

 Any thoughts ?

Also, I'll ask again, since nobidy responded to my earlier inquiry, does anyone know what Wellenreiter dies after about a minute of successful sniffing (it certainly finds things, but it shuts down showrtly after doing so).

 Thnks all!

Accessories / Zaurus Compatible Mini Dvd Rw ?
« on: September 14, 2005, 07:38:37 pm »
Anybody know of a portable USB DVD burner drive designed for 8cm dvds ?

I think I've seen mini cd burners before, but I've never seen any for mini dvds.

Wouldn't that be an interesting addition to a future Z ?  Internal hdd, wifi, bluetooth and a built in PSP+UMD-esque 8cm DVD burner.

It would be cool it if it stuck to the bottom of the Z and had it's own special usb interface/dock.  But I guess like the PSP it would suffer from short run times due to battery drain.  But it would be cool...The OQO can't touch THAT....

In any case, I'm just wondering if such an ACCESSORY might exist at this point stand alone...

 Thanks!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / As Per Sd - 60x Vs. 120x Vs. Whateva...
« on: August 30, 2005, 02:30:40 am »
Hello all,

My september departure date draws near and soon I shall be bound for Japan..

 Ki wo tsukete, Nihonjin-tachi !

( heehee...I'm actually quite inocuous for an American...I just wanna learn Japanese...)

So I've purchased a new digital camera.  It's a realatively cheap $100 (on sale from $180 ) 5.1mp afair.   Upon being questioned, both the camera sales rep, and the memory card rep said that using high(er) speed cards in a camera like this (read: in a camera this cheap) wouldn't make much difference and would basically amount to overspending.

But these were FRY'S reps, so I take it with a grain of salt (having been such an individual fro a VERY brief time myself).

But as I stood gazing into the flash media display case I noticed 2 SD cards...among others of course.

Both were 512MB, but one was 60x and the other was 120x.  The latter was  $60, only $10 more than the 60x.  True, the reps said that the camera couldn't really benefit from faster media, but my question to all of you is...

 ...can the Zaurus ?

I already purchsed a 512MB SD for my C1000 back right when I recqived it.  This was a few months ago, so it was definitely one of the older 26x or whatever the standard was around march...it certainly isn't marked Hi-Speed.  But if my cheap camera isn't gonna care one way or the other I'll gladly throw that card in the canera and purchase a new one for my Z.

Upgrading to 1 gig is kind of tempting, but no matter what capacity I end up buying, I'm curious if the Zaurus can benefit from faster speed SD media...particularly for movie playback.  If it is a real improvement I'll probably go for it, even though the warranty on the slower card was litteraly 5 times longer...

Any advice/info you guys care to share is appreciated!

Thanks!

General Discussion / Young Padawan Seeks Help With Ipks Et Al...
« on: August 09, 2005, 01:58:01 pm »
I'm slowing growing in the ways of Linux in general, and the Z in particular.  I've benefited a great deal from peoples advice on this forum and others as well as peoples hard work and generousity with their delicious homebrew software.

   Thanks All!

But I'm tired of being a leech.  I want to be able to pursue my own little projects and also to be one of the people posting stuff up to make life and messing with our Z's easier and more enjoyable for all of us.

So I'm just looking for any educational advice anyone might be willing to share.

By way of resources: I've taken a class or two in shell scripting and Perl, and I still have most of my books from those courses (well except my favorite Perl book that got stolen...along with my car...), so I'm probably good there until I get a lot more proficient (and thus need heavier texts).

I have an excellent pocket handbook for the most common commands, a quick reference 3 page fold out laminate that I am constantly refering to (actually I'm slowly memorizing commands and syntax...but I have the extra hurdle of having to un-learn DOS to a slight degree).  I also have 'Linux in a Nutshell', which probably has everything I'll ever need, but it's  a very dry no nonsense read.

I have several PC's at home.  All have Windows of some kind, one or two also have various distros of Linux on them via multiboot configurations (I'm pursuing Linux+ certification, so I use them to explore and practice on), one Linspire install, and a Fedora core 3.  However, soon I will start my 1 year in Japan and I will then only have my Laptop which only has Windows XP (of course I have 'live linux' cd's that I can use, but I think I might just buy a small hard drive, install a full distro, and then boot my laptop directly from it via a USB-to-IDE adapter, and then I'll just mount the internal HD so I can play MP3's while I fiddle.  See ?  I'm not COMPLETELY inept   )

But if anyone cares to recomend any more good books or other resources for the moderately computer savy linux n00b concerning programming, scripting, administration, and anything else you think might be important I'd love to hear about it.

Of particular interest would be anything Zaurus specific.  I know there are several web pages devoted to it/them (and I know many of them are run by regular posters on this forum...possibly even YOU), but anything published/copywritten in hardcopy/paperback that is specific to the zaurus I'd probably be interested in buying. (VERY specifcally at the moment I'd love to be pointed in the direction of a definitive guide to creating ipks...)

Once again, let me say thanks to everyone who has ever posted information or advice or a script, a thought provoking question or even a cheery thought.  All that's a big part of what makes hobbys fun !

   Thanks!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Pim Question On C1000
« on: August 05, 2005, 02:57:06 pm »
I completely surprised myself the other day when I started actually using my C1000 for it's intended purpose (or one of them anyway).  PIM !  Yes, I found myself musing...

" Boy I really wish I had all these names and phone numbers on me all the time, I never seem to have anyones number when I need it.  And I wish I could keep track of all these things I'm supposed to be doing and appointments Im supposed to be keeping.  I'm really getting confused with all that's going on right now.  Wish I had something that could handle all that..."

*Doink* - Sorry friends, sometimes it takes me a while to catch on

I never used my 5500 for this too much, probably because it was *just* slightly too inconvenient to use the thumboard (EXCUSES EXCUSES, I could have used outlook or the Qtopia desktop to do the typing on my PC and then synched it, I know...I know...).

But the micro KB on the C1000 is *just* enough better than the 5500 to make it seem like a snap to tap in a new date or appointment or a memo (But now that I have spent a little more time typing on it I realise the mile long emails I usually write will necessitate an external KB, so I bought the oft maligned bendy-flex silicone one and it should arrive in a couple days).  So I've been merrily adding addresses and numbers and putting things into the calendar (I think this might also end up being kind of a handy little diary as well).

Now I've run into a snag.  I have selected the option to make my  'Todo' list items show up in the calendar, but they don't seem to.

Anyone else experience this problem ?

General Discussion / Portable Linux Gaming/media Device - Gpx2
« on: July 28, 2005, 12:38:39 pm »
Probably only of mild interest here, but if you're familiar with Korea's Gamepark 32 (portable friend to the Homebrew and Emulator crowd) you might be interested that it looks to be updated soon.  But this time it's packing Linux!

 http://www.gpx2.com/product/product.asp

It looks really nice (nearly as appealing physically as the PSP IMHO). Plays a good range of video formats and uses all too common SD media (yay!). And if you check their website you'll see tha encourage users to develop their own games/software and happily support emulators!

I'm a little puzzled by it's lack of expandability.  It doesn't seem to have any provisions for adding hardware accessories, so it doesn't look like WIFI will be an option.  Not necessarily a bad thing, but it would be nice.

I just might pick one of these things up if really does beat the $190 price of the current GP32.

 Enjoy!

General Discussion / Finally Got My C-1000
« on: June 20, 2005, 12:49:44 am »
"...I'm with you now."

 $427 @ eBay
 $462 (shipped)

Upon receiving my C1000 of course I've got tons of notes and questions...

DANG! that thing is light !!!

It feels a bit more cheap and plasticky than I was expecting.  But that's ok I suppose so long as it actually holds together over time..

 That said...

DANG! that thing is light !!!

I'm a fairly hale and hearty male, but even I can appreciate that lighter is better if you're going to be lugging something for miles on end (as I plan to do during my upcomming travel plans).  If nothing else it will be just little less likely to drag my pants down over time...

The mono speaker is a nice touch (though mine will probably be disabled the majority of the time).  As is the jog wheel and ok+cancel butons.  I will miss the full PDA style 5500  layout for portrait usage (made navigating through MP3s while driving a snap), but you can't have everything.  I think the switchable clamshell form factor is worth it.

The display is razor sharp (finally a screen that lives up to the company's name). I see what people mean about it almost being TOO sharp and TOO high in resolution.  Fortunately I still have good visions (I hope this doesn't ruin it   ) so I think it will hold me over until we are jacking all our electronics directly into our brains...

Oh yeah, just in case people were wondering.  I have a D-Link DCF-660w card, a PQI 1gb CF card (the slower speed), and a PQI 512mb SD card (again, the slower speed) and they were all easily recognized.  The wifi card was a slam dunk and I was on the internet in seconds.  I also have a Targus 56k modem (like anyone cares) and a Socket 10/100 ethernet card that I will be trying in about 2 weeks when my life is no longer  h3!! (I'm exceedingly busy of late and am in fact this very moment procrasting writing a public lecture that I am a bit nervous about giving...  )

I haven't tried out MP3 playing yet (I just got a used Archos 20gb Jukebox FM recorder as well ($127 @ eBay) so for music I'm playing with that right at the moment).  But the audio hardware seems sound (heehee), so unless the UI is patently terrible, it should be ok...

I'd heard video playback was abysmal on the C1000, but I find the clarity and smoothness of the embeded player quite acceptable (the ~225mb files I usually prepare for mobile usage aren't very hi-res to begin with...heck I should be reading a book instead anyway...) .  But I was surprised to notice that the legends appear to be true and the new Z's DON'T support DivX out of the box.

Am I missing something ?  Didn't even my old SL-5500 do that with the STOCK rom ?  Did MPEG-4 in all it's incarnations suddenly go out of style ?  Did Bill Gates pull it off and hypno-ray everyone into believeing WMV was the only way to go ?

I suppose this leads to my first question (though I know there are probably other threads that will reveal the answer...)

Question:-------->  Could I possible get some reccomendations for a 'third party' movie player for a C-1000 running the stock rom that supports DivX files?

Oh yeah...the stock rom.  As I mentioned, I got this unit off eBay (new).  And as you might expect, while it has been converted to english, it was done with the minimum level conversion (I think they just changed the language/region code as you might when installing almost any Linux distro on a PC).  So I'm seeing a lot of empty little boxes.  I can navigate around well enough, but it's a little annoying.  Plus, the Japanese dictionary (Jisho) is VERY difficult to use productively.  I could go with Beiks I suppose...
It is my understanding that the Cacko roms are basicly just the stock rom, but more completely TRANSLATED (correct me if I'm wrong).

Question:-------->  Is there a Cacko Rom available for the C1000 yet ?

The battery definitely seems to give more life than my old SL-5500 did (but mine might have been ready to give up the ghost when I bought it used for all I know).  But it won't last forever, so I'd like to plug it in eventually.  I got mine with only the standard japanese AC adapter which appears to be rated at 100v.  Since I'd really hate to experience having a $427 (+shipping) firecracker  I must ask...

Question:-------->  Is it safe to use the stock Japanese AC adapter in the USA ?

Well, I can't procrastinate forever, so that will have to be it for now (more is sure to come though).

So if anyone has any information about the C-1000 (in general or specific to the questions asked)  I would be greatful to receive it.

I'd also like to take this opurtunity to thank all the OE contributors out there.  It's great to have support/exchanges from other like minded individuals such as you find in here.  And more so than most forums I post on, everyone here seems to keep things civil and upbeat, even when opinions differ.

So many thanks to all the posters and to the gracious indiviuals who maintain this site !!!

Accessories / Pocket Dvd Burner
« on: June 01, 2005, 01:01:08 pm »
Computex revealed to us BenQ's plan for a pocket optical burner.

 http://engadget.com/entry/1234000180045135/#comments

Mini-cd's in the fall, with a mini DVD burner coming out in '06.  1.4gb per disc.

Any chance of Zaurus Cx000 USB compatibilty and  some burning software ?

For that matter, do current USB cd/dvd reader/writers work ?

Accessories / Mmc Vs. Sd
« on: May 10, 2005, 01:00:12 pm »
From what I've heard, the Z's are all native MMC card devices and run SD cards in some type of emmulation mode.  Is there any kind of performance penaulty for this ?

I'm looking to outfit my forthcoming C1000 suite with a 512mb 'SD' card of some type.  In that size range the MMC card prices I'm seeing are bout 20% to 30% cheaper than SD. I should probably research (and likely will) the specific differences between the two in general, but as far as the Z's go is there any reason not to buy MMC ?

 Thanks all!

(I will point out as well that @ 1GB the prices of the two formats appear to be about the same...)

Accessories / Cf Wifi With Mc Card Connector ?
« on: May 09, 2005, 02:53:33 pm »
I could have sworn a year or two ago I saw one or two CF wifi cards that had a little external antenna jack built into'em (MC Card type I believe).  Anyone know of any models sporting this handy little feature.

Perhaps even more important, anyone know of a Zaurus/Kismet compatible model ?

Software / Network Utility Favorites
« on: May 07, 2005, 07:06:35 pm »
(Not too many bites on this on in 'Network and Security' so I'm given it a shot here.  If this constitutes some type of prohibited multi-posting I apologize and ask that this post be removed.)

I've spent the last few months trying to gather networking utilities and such for the WinCE world. But now I'm selling all my CE handhelds and switching entirely to Linux for my pocket computing needs (considering the same for my PC...one of them anyway).

I plan on purchasing a C1000, and right off the bat I know that I want Kismet and NMAP to be on there. As so many people here are Zaurus and Linux savy I was just hoping to get some comments on peoples favorite networking and security utilities for the Zaurus. Particularly on the standard QTopia Rom as I am not quite '1ee7' enough to mess with the other roms...yet

(Though I must admit I find pdaXrom very interesting)

 Thanks all!
