Zaurus - pdaXrom / Kathrin RC8 Is Out..

We will probally making the applet support scanning of a folder for extra keymaps and the swichting between them :-)

scannig for additional xmodmap files (and according national flags' PNGs) would be very appreciated!

i have made the czech keyboard files, for switching kbd mapping i use the original 'keyrus' applet (which is somehow dirty solution -- only two mappings can be "installed" simultaneously, original files are only replaced, however, no compilation is necessary.)

zdravim,

pocesteni vyse popsane daXd se tyka romu CACKO.

na pdaXrom je situace rekl bych jednodussi, s fonty neni treba delat vubec nic, staci zmenit mapovani klaves (pomoci xmodmap, prepinani vyuziva puvodni koncept-- ceska vlajecka na status bar).
funguje bez problemu, nyni pouzivam napr. abiword zcela pocesteny.

pdaXrom Zaurus - C860 CZ kbd
pripominky vitany.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Status Update..

Hi Laze (and all pdaXrom heroes),

We have tested most new mobile phones, we don't own a audiovox card. The phone we have tested are: Nokia 6230, Siemens SX1, Sony Erricson, Motorola V3 and some more..

i am looking forward to test the new rom and RC6/7 feed with my Siemens S55 (GPRS over IrDA).

Things we have fixed recently:

- "complicated" init strings are accpeted for pppconfig/pppdialer

this fix will really help me!
my mobile operator (T-Mobile in Czech Rep.) requires such "complicated" strings -- i was forced to play with config files a bit in 1.1.0 RC5...
so i would like to test it as well.

the delay is ok for the thing of such complexity; sometimes it cannot be estimated very precisely --  it is always "quality versus deadline" question, which may be an emotional issue.
personally i prefer waiting few more days for some important bugfixes. the pdaXrom team is doing great work and we all should be patient and support them.

however, i completely agree with ikm:

I would actually appreciate even more feedback from pdaXrom team -- what's going on, what to expect, early hopes, interim speculations and late revelations ... As long as it is marked accordingly, everybody would be comfortable with that.

i am looking forward to the new release!

in one of your previous posts you wrote:

which assumes $BASEDIR is "/opt/arm/3.3.2", but otherwise it looks like you are using "/opt/arm/3.3.2-vfp". Perhaps mixing VFP and pre-VFP SDK versions?
runzgcc-vfp.sh and configure.sh must use the same base dir i think.

HW: ok, jsem zvedavy, jak dopadnete.

pamet: tu pametovou kartu nedoporucuji kvuli rychlosti, ale kvuli tomu, ze FLASH (ROM) je neustale obsazena a chces-li instalovat dalsi SW, nemas prakticky jinou moznost. a pak je samozrejme lepsi rychlejsi nez pomalejsi, jde jen o komfort.
rekl bych, ze rychlost flash nebo cf/sd karet obecne neni to, co mi na C860 vadi. spis bych uvital prave USB host nebo treba vestaveny bluetooth. pripadne wifi by bodlo.

crosscompiling: zalezi na ROMu, ktery pouzijete. co se tyce pdaXrom, mam urcite zkusenosti -- neni to uplne plug'n'play

ano, navzdory miniaturnim rozmerum je velmi pohodlna, da se pouzivat i vleze nebo ve stoje v tramvaji :-)
BTW -- ted si jen delam starosti s popiskami ceskych klaves -- asi budu muset najit nejaky hodne maly propisot.

Podle recenzi by na tom transflective displej 6000 mel byt lepe nez ostatni rady Zauru.

s jinymi displeji nemam moc zkusenost. perfektni displej jsem videl snad jen na HP iPAQ hx4700, byl srovnatelny s tim u C860, mozna i o neco lepsi.

Jak jsi spokojen s vykonem?

to je slozita otazka. zalezi na jakem ROMu a s jakou aplikaci, samozrejme. pri startu aplikaci je znatelna nekolikasekundova prodleva, ktera je dana ctenim z FLASH do RAM, pak vicemene vse vyhovuje. browsery (zkousel jsem Dillo, NetFront)  bezi velmi svizne, da se naraz otevrit i treba deset stranek a na vykonu to znat neni. to same textove editory a PIM aplikace, dokonce i takovy bumbrdlicek, jako je AbiWord, celkem funguje. co se tyce tveho sw Cumulus -- mapy by mohly narazet na neexistenci FPU v armu, ktera srazi vykon aplikaci, v nichz se hodne pocita s floaty. kazdopadne doporucuju aspon pdaXrom, kde je lepsi emulace plovouci carky.
s nativni kompilaci zkusenost nemam, prekladam na PC.

Nechybi pamet moc casto? Provozujes swap na FLASH kdyz je treba nebo se bez nej obejdes?

obejdu se celkem bez SWAPu, nebo to aspon moc neresim a resi to za me defaultne pdaXrom. RAM prekvapive neni zasadni problem (jeji velikost je asi dana spotrebou, vyrobci se snazi o co nejvetsi provozni dobu na akumulator a RAM je velky zrout proudu). kazdopadne doporucuju koupi co mozna nejvetsi a nejrychlejsi pametove karty SD nebo CF (v zavislosti na modelu). FLASH je totiz porad celkem plna a instalovat aplikace je dobre prave na kartu.

nazdar PM,

1) C860 mi privezl kolega z Anglie. on to objednal u shirtpocket.co.uk, coz bude asi nejlepsi moznost v UK -- a muselo se na to nejakou, pomerne neprijemnou, dobu cekat -- takze tohohle prodejce doporucit nemuzu.
zajimavy je take:
Japan Direct
levneji nez pres conics.net jsem to take nikde nenasel -- zkus se zeptat na jinych forech, jake maji lidi s nakupem zkusenosti (amici to vetsinou kupuji pres Dynamism.com)

2) ja si vybral vlastne C760 (duvodem byly hlavne dva: clamshell konstrukce a Linux). protoze C860 je vlastne totez v novejsim provedeni, koupili jsme nakonec C860.

3) displej je naprosto spickovy -- s podsvetlenim vyhovuje pri vsech normalnich podminkach a uhlech pohledu. samozrejme to pri ostrem slucnicku neni uplne ono, ale je to nepochybne jeden z nejlepsich soucasnych displeju pro PDA.

doufam, ze se najde dostatek ceskych uzivatelu. prosim, dejte o sobe vedet a podelte se se svymi zkusenostmi!

pro zacatek:
- podarilo se zprovoznit ceskou klavesnici na pdaXrom 1.1.0
- C860 umi komunikovat pres Irda/GPRS. vyzkouseno na Cacko a pdaXrom s telefonem Siemens S55 a operatorem T-mobile.

pokud bude zajem, rad skripty vystavim k obecnemu pouziti.

it seems the crosscompilling will be better supported on pdaXrom website and we all should be just more patient:

right now it looks like the 'newvox' demo is not as 'up to date' as it could be for the 3.3.2-vfp state of the art. it is not a fatal flaw: if you can write your own Makefiles for your project and autoconf-it later, you can fix and cook up things somehow.

but i agree with you on:

if i can get the crosscompiler to work - or i could understand what is going wrong when it doesn't, i could contribute something to the pdaxrom users....

... a good/working demo for crosscompiling newbies (removing such roadblocks) should really speed up an entire development for pdaXrom, which is great platform anyway.

hope we see all promised changes soon!

i was thinking the crosscompile tools set would pass all the needed enviroment variables to the configure program, then i wouldn't need the big long options string......

you are absolutely right.
when both crosscompile tools and configure process are correct and in sync, you need not long options when invoking commands. my previous post was adressed to Martin who was trying to compile newvox demo and his linker could not find libSDL.so library.
i observe similar behavior when repeating his steps. so i am wondering if the cause of linking error (incorrect LIBS setting in Makefile?) is the same.

if the ld program isn't recognizing the env variables does that mean the ld needs to be replaced/recompiled?

i don´t think so. the ld linker does not recognise env. variables itself, they are passed to ld by gcc (ie. armv5tel-cacko-linux-gcc) and gcc knows these settings from Makefile. the Makefile is generated during the ./configure process.
the probable reason of our problems IMHO is some incompatibility between runzgcc-vfp.sh (which correctly sets X11LIB variable) and configure scripts for particular example (newvox in my and Martin´s case).

perhaps the source package we use is not ready for somehow newer crosscompiling process or we use wrong ./configure options.
in my case these options are:

export CC=/opt/arm/3.3.2-vfp/bin/armv5tel-cacko-linux-gcc
./configure --host=armv5tel-cacko-linux --build=i686-linux --x-includes=/opt/arm/3.3.2-vfp/armv5tel-cacko-linux/X11R6/include --x-libraries=/opt/arm/3.3.2-vfp/armv5tel-cacko-linux/X11R6/lib --disable-debug --prefix=/usr/local

...and subsequent ´make´ produces linking errors.

another strange thing is the need for explicit exporting CC variable. it sould be done either by runzgcc-vfp.sh or by ./configure.
we were warned enough.

as for uname problem:
if you have working uname but the configure fails, try to understand how ./configure processes the uname output and determines the linux version. it can be some issue with commands following uname (like sed, etc.)

Hi,

It looks like the linker does not know $(BASEDIR)/armv5tel-cacko-linux/X11R6/lib path, using only $(BASEDIR)/armv5tel-cacko-linux/lib.

You can try manually invoke the compilation on cmdline with -L and -W:

/opt/arm/3.3.2/armv5tel-cacko-linux-gcc  -g -O2 -I/opt/arm/3.3.2/armv5tel-cacko-linux/include/SDL -D_REENTRANT   -o newvox  newvox.o  -L/opt/arm/3.3.2/armv5tel-cacko-linux/lib -Wl,-rpath,/opt/arm/3.3.2/armv5tel-cacko-linux/lib -lSDL -lpthread -L/opt/arm/3.3.2/armv5tel-cacko-linux/X11R6/lib -Wl,-rpath,/opt/arm/3.3.2/armv5tel-cacko-linux/X11R6/lib

It would generate the zaurus executable ´newvox´. If so, the ./configure process should be fixed.
