New products and alternatives / Zaurus Or N810 Or ?
« on: May 22, 2008, 10:22:02 pm »
I poked into their download directory, I saw at the top "2007.12" but didn't bother to note the modified date!

I'm quite used to flashing my Zaurus, I think the 5500 was the hardest from a physical point of view.

If you really want PIM stuff, the N810 probably isn't any better of a choice than the Z.

Any distro will load almost instantly (assuming you just suspend and don't actually shut down). Angstrom is nice*, and has similar capabilities as pdaX (different quirks, perhaps fewer, and more up-to-date).

*GPE and Opie are lousy IMO, so you kind of need to build your own image if you want a straight-up X11 environment (by that I mean with a "standard" environment, like Xfce or Fluxbox or IceWM) . So long as you have a Linux box with some free space, it's mostly painless (and simple).

I have a very nice T61p laptop for X, I just need SSH, media playing and PIM, really.  I suppose I've just come to perceive my 3200 as slower than the 860 because of the hard drive, so really my goal should be more keeping everything I can on flash than complaining about resume times!  It looks to me on first glance that Angstrom is as dead as pdaXrom, am I just looking at the wrong site?

Ah, this is just the thread I've been looking for!

I've owned a Palm Zire 71, a Zaurus 5500, 860 and now a 3200.  I liked the 860 the most, but wanted more storage!  Now I find myself with a bit of a dilemma: do I make the jump off the Zaurus ship to a N810, or do I try to make my Zaurus fit my needs a little better?  I've been running pdaXii for a while now, it's great in how many things you can do with it but I find myself wishing it would load up faster!  Another thing I find myself needing now is PIM applications.

When I first started using Zaurii I was a full time student, and "party at Kyle's" isn't that hard to remember.  Now I am a systems administrator (!) and find that I need to take notes, keep track of meetings, etc.  My round about post leads to this question: What's the best choice for a fast loading PDA that will also store and play music, as well as doing SSH?  Should I switch to Cacko or Angstrom, or just setup pdaXrom to run mostly off flash?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / What's The Best Choice While Waiting For Pdaxrom 2?
« on: November 12, 2007, 07:51:38 pm »
I actually did do a quick search, but nothing of use turned up immediately, and I got impatient.  Mea culpa!

As far as the kernel versions, as an end user you will not notice much (if any) changes.  Think of it more as going from Win2k to XP than 3.11 to 95.  From my understanding 2.4 to 2.6 does yield improvements, but they're in the kernel itself more so than the users interaction with it.

Edit:  If you're in Florida you're probably old enough to be a lot of people's grandfather.

Hi everyone, I've been away for a while, and was never a big poster, and I just realized: I haven't been to these forums in ages.  Why?  Because pdaXII13 has been so good to me, and I've been busy with school.

Now I find myself back in the normal groove of things, wondering how much more I can squeeze out of my Z (It's been serving mostly as an mp3 player, web browser and ssh client), and what the best ROM to put on it is.  I've been using pdaX or some variation there of since I got my 860, and the trend has continued with my 3200.  Is pdaXii still the way to go, or have the Rxxx releases matured?  I don't mind betas (I've been using Zaurii for about 3 years now, I guess that goes without saying), and I would love to contribute in any way I can, but I do need a certain level of functionality.

Thanks for reading a long winded post!

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Cf Speed
« on: July 28, 2007, 03:13:35 am »
The reports I've seen range from improved performance (read/write, as well as battery life), and early death as mentioned above.  If you're going to do it, I would suggest getting a good name brand (good is really a matter of opinion and past experience with flash memory, personally I have never had problems with SanDisk), and not storing anything critical.

The microdrives are nice and reliable, but the spin up and seek times are always painfully apparent when loading larger applications.  If I was looking to do this upgrade, depending on the cost difference, I would get the fastest possible.  Worst come to worst, the Z doesn't operate at the memory's full capability, and you use it for something else later on.

Make sure to report back on your progress.

I downloaded rdesktop 1.3.1 from the above feed using Firefox (on the Z), and was able to install without any problems.  I was also able to successfully use my DD-WRT router for SSH tunneling.

If you downloaded the file using a web browser it is possible that the browser automatically unzipped the ipk (which is just a tar.gz file).

Download and install were both done through the package manager using the feeds already configured.  I tried rdekstop 1.5 and 1.3.1(?) and neither worked.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Snes9x?

The one here should be for 2.4.x kernels, but I haven't tried it.

BTW, if your build runs, it's probably good and the ROM is bad.

The ROM is known good, thanks for the link.

Isn't znester working for you? I think they both are for NES files ? Znester works fine for me.

I haven't seen it anywhere.  I'm looking for any SNES emulation on the Z, Snes9x is just the one I've used in the past.

Well, I tried to compile from source, but all it does is bring up a small window in X with nothing in it.  Guess I'll try some different games.

Nobody has the beta 1 or 3 package?

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C3200 Overclocking Effects?

That's the older thread I was referring to.

The heat and screen issues are what really concern me.

I'm curious, for those who overclock their C3200s...what speed do you use, and what side effects are there?  Does it generate considerably more heat, or is it just a battery drain?  Have you had any stability problems?

I saw an older topic from when the device first came out, and I thought it might just be easier to start a new thread for anyone else wondering the same things I am.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / C3200 Cases

I think the main problem with size is the C3200 itself!

I'm curious, you guys don't find the Piel Frama case annoying?  It just seems to me dealing with that extra layer, and the cover for the screen would be annoying.

I stopped using neoprene cases when the screen on one of my Psion 3a's in a neoprene case was smashed when I was carrying them in my book bag.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=159671\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The flip cases would offer even less protection, I would think!

Thanks for the replies everyone, keep them coming.
