C1000/3x00 Hardware / I'd Like To Buy A C1000 But
« on: September 09, 2008, 01:17:08 pm »
Hello Henri,

Long ago I bought the SL C3000 (similar to the SL C3100 in that it has a hard drive). I used to have similar devices before that, largely operating on Windows CE. I found the SL C3000 (and from the looks of it, the SL C1000 would be the same), a little difficult to type compared to the HP Jornada 720 I have. However, it isn't impossible to type and actually become quite good at it. You just develop different habits of typing.

The Zaurus used to be at the top of the line, as far as I am concerned and cannot really be compared to Apple's Touch. If you're worried about typing on the Zaurus, I think it will be more difficult with the Touch.

I still have the Zaurus and carry it with me to work and use it both to type quick notes and also as a music player. But, I have recently bought an EEE PC (701 4GB) that is larger than the Zaurus or iTouch with a keyboard that's about 75% of an actual keyboard, making the typing quite easy. You may want to have a look at that as well as it seems these "netbooks" as they call them are in the forefront of mobile computing.

Regards,

Nicolas

Hi,

I'm French and very interested in Zaurus. I've seen some models on internet, and it seems C1000 is almost good.

Is it easy to type on the keyboard ? I would like like to buy it for this, with word processor.

Do you think Zaurus computers are always good computers nowadays, in front of Ipod Touch etc ?  If the Zaurus is out of order one day, will I be  able to find pieces easily for it ?

Thank you really much

Cordially

Zaurus - pdaXrom / May Have A Problem Charging Battery, Sl-c1000

One of the reasons for me using beta3

on a semi-related note, has any one seen any degradation in battery life using pdaXii13? I may be forgetting, but I seem to recall better battery life under the original Sharp ROM. After installing pdaXii13, even after changing the battery, more than 75% get drained in an hour or so - even more if I am using the Ambicom wireless card.

Pixels revealed -- it's 1024x600.

Rumor has it that this new beast will be priced like 702 (the current 8G model).
But imho I don't think Asus will push it to the market any time soon just because 701 is just about to start selling in many countries.

interesting rumor. it would probably undercut sales of 701 as you said if they release it in 2Q or 3Q...they may wait for 2008 holiday season though in th US

just curious, isn't there a cut down version of open office now?

There must be one...just not sure if there's one for linux. My SanDisk cruzer has a stripped down version I use on windows pcs.

it can be done, but it's way too slow to be useful. There's an image of OOo floating around. You just mount it and off you go. but as i said, it's way too slow.If abiword and gnumeric ain't quite up to your task, then maybe you shouldn't use your Z for such tasks IMHO. The Z has a good keyboard but i don't think that it's suitable for long typing sessions and such,,,

You're right...I was just being greedy. I have been using abiword for typing quick documents and gnumeric spreadsheet for expenses while on the go...

Is it possible to run OpenOffice on pdaXii13 5.4.9? Has anyone done it and if yes how well does it run? I find AbiWord and qnumeric not quite up to par. Also, under the Sharp ROM I had installed PlanMaker by SoftMaker. Pardon my ignorance, but how would I install it on pdaXii13?

Meanie,

Thank you for all your work. Which one is the "stable" release? 5.2 still?

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Cd Players And C3000

that's really interesting. I just flashed my C3000 to the latest version of pdaXii13 but haven't tried to see if the XMMS Player would recognize the audio CD. I'll give it a try.

Hi m8s...

Did you do anything finally?

I play mp3, but no audio cd so far...

I tried mplayer & xmms...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=147207\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Same thing. The USB CDROM loads without a problem, but Zaurus sees it only as another storage device - in my case. I can play mp3s and I can play mpgs only because  the CDROM is recognized as a storage - no CDs or DVDs.

Maybe someone has luck and could share their findings.

I know it is an old matter, but I found solution. I install Goobox - full, all packages - for pdaxrom. Well it is not working, but afterwards I try xmms and then It was possible for xmms to mount and recognize Audio CD!!! Well, when I insert an Audio CD and I inport it to my playlist, xmms goes on line and update all titles and plays like a charm...
Good luck!!!

I came accross this last week and wondered if anyone else had tried it?

http://www.qtechinc.com/speaq.htm

It is in the alpha stage, but I loaded it on collie with 3.10 sharp rom.  I was able to connect with sipphone and call a pots landline.  It is not designed to run a sl5500 due to slow processor.

I am going to load it on my C1000 and give it a spin.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=155549\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I am not sure that speaQ works on C3000...at least with mine I received an error message instructing me to uninstall it at the end.

If you froogle, there were other shops showing the same product in stock anywhere from $5 less to the same price in case TD runs out.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Also Buy.com has the 4GB SD Transcend for $49.95 at [a href=\"http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=203938178&adid=17070&dcaid=17070]http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=...070&dcaid=17070[/url]

If you look again, this isn't the [a href=\"http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2315930&Tab=0&NoMapp=0]same card[/url].
It's a different model number, plus there is no speed rating.
So it's probably just a standard speed compared to 150x (which might not make much difference on the Z anyway, as long as it works).
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=150541\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

oops, got too excited by the "dropping" prices...

C1000/3x00 Hardware / My Zaurus Not Recognize The Card [fixed]
« on: December 26, 2006, 03:38:09 pm »

I tried to format with the zaurus:

mkfs.vfat -F 16 /dev/mmcda1

and the result is:

unable to open /dev/mmcda1

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=149080\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I've been having similar problems with a 4 GB SD card. The 1 GB is recognised and mounted, and so is a 2 GD mini SD with an SD adaptor. A 2 GD CF also works. All these work fine after I installed the driver provided elsewhere in the forum. However, after 2 weeks of operation, the 4 GB SD wasn't recognised by my Z (C3000). On top of that the data was lost and I had to reformat in in Windoze as FAT32. Z still wasn't able to recognise it. Then I tried to mount it (mount /dev/mmcda /mnt/card). That worked while the Z was on. After I turned it off, the card wasn't mounting. I had to mount it manually...maybe a manual mount might work for you...

Do you have Meanie's System Info ipk installed?
It containes the icon the usbapplet uses, but I don't think sharp's default system info does.

I don't think I do...I will search for it and install it. Thanks!

I managed to rewrite the applet while everyone was watching the horse race. Here's the rewritten version. It has some more features, but needs much more testing also...

Wow! That was fast

Here's how it works for me so far:
I get a popup notification on insertion of usb drive using /mnt/usbstorage directory.
Unmount option now works.
After unmount, this item disappears from the list (no option to remount)
Not sure if this is intended behavior.

No popup notification on insertion of usb mouse, but it shows up in the list.
Not sure if this is intended behavior.

Nice work.
Thanks for this update.

Doug

Nice update indeed. In my case, though, I do not see an icon in the the statusbar. Instead, there is blank space. When I click on the space, it shows me the various options: "Unmount usbstorage1", "Mount USB ZIP" and "Mount CD-ROM".

By the way, the blank spot (or potential icon) only shows up after I attach the USB cable and the USB flash drive to the Z.

Thanks again!
