Cosmo Communicator - CoDi / CODI update
« on: December 11, 2019, 06:13:21 am »
I seem to get stuck at 91% when flashing the image. Not sure why.

Not sure why - but when I try and apply a live wallpaper - after a period of time, it seems to reset to the stock wallpaper?
Anyone else seeing this?

3
Same here - must be a bug

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / First impressions mini review
« on: November 25, 2019, 04:53:02 am »
Quote from: vader
I haven't seen a review yet, so thought I'd write one for all those people waiting for their cosmos to get delivered. Firstly, I upgraded from the gemini to cosmo, so I can try to detail the improvements as well as new features.

The same
A strange thing to start with, but for those still using their geminis, this might be useful, and those who don't have one, this will be new. So the size is basically the same. On paper it is a little thicker, but the main difference is the top cover is a different shape. The cosmo weighs a bit more, but it is not heavy. If anything it feels more solid. The screen is basically the same, still good in my opinion. There are the same number of ports (2 USB-C, headphone). So all in all, roughly the same size, weight and shape. It fits nicely in trouser pockets, or jacket pockets. I wouldn't put it in your back pocket of your jeans.

Improvements
So everyone knows what the improvements were meant to be, but how much of an improvement are they? The keyboard is amazing. I got use to the gemini keyboard, but this one is much better. Nice action (clickey), and the keys have never been missed (the space bar on the gemini regularly doesn't work unles you press the middle). The hinge, which was the subject of many indiegogo comments is a big improvement as well. It is much firmer, doesn't wobble, and holds the cosmo firmly when on a table (as I am now typing). The unit feels far more responsive, but that could be a combination of faster CPU and more modern android. The camera - Oh the camera. The gemini had a camera (well as an extra). It was.....usable. You really only used it in an emergency. The front camera was good for skype/video chats, but that is about it. The cosmo camera is, well, good. It won't rock the world with its quality, but it takes more than acceptable photos. The flash is a welcome addition. The speakers are also nice and loud, and clear.

New features
The external screen. It works well. Maybe a bit slow, but it is really useful. You can read texts, accept calls. The selfie image is a bit delayed, but still usable. All in all a great addition. The other great improvement is the backlit keyboard. As well as being better all round, the backlight makes it usable in all conditions. It works surprisingly well - better than I thought it would. I also like that you can add a sim card/memory card without removing the back cover. It is more like other phones with a caddy which is reached via a thin pin like tool.

Summary
I can't think of any areas where the cosmo didn't improve on the gemini. I've only had it a few days, and I already love it. Once I worked out that DuraSpeed is broken (not cosmo's fault) and now my watch stays connected, I have no niggles. The battery easily lasts a day (83% half way through the day). The speakers are really loud if you turn them right up. So hopefully this gives people waiting something to look forward to. It is worth waiting for.

Thanks - completely agree with all of your points. The Cosmo is a significant step up from the Gemini. The only

- I can't seem to change the wallpaper - it seems to reset for some reason to the default
- the external screen is incredibly laggy - hopefully some tuning can make it more usable

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Well, I'm bloody annoyed
« on: November 12, 2019, 05:04:21 am »
I run at 600 DPI on the Gemini as I prefer the software buttons at the bottom of the screen. The device is more stable and better balanced to screen presses. The other massive benefit is apps such as Gmail and Outlook run in tablet mode/split screen, making better use of screen real estate. Makes it feel like a mini laptop.

One of the issues is though, some of the apps (App Bar, Agenda, Notes) don't scale properly - which is annoying. I've contacted Planet about this but they say they don't support higher DPI settings for their apps which is a bummer.

Might be a calibration issue with the battery - I had this issue with the Gemini.

New update coming before the end of the day tomorrow!
Looks like one more hiccup:

Hence, there was a pause in production early last week and no shipments of Cosmo perks since then.

Cosmo production restarted 3 days ago, on the 26th of October, using the re-supplied components.
But we're almost there
Seems like it is an advantage NOT to be in the very first production run

Link to the update (for easy access for those not having the IGG page open in a tab constantly, like I have   ):

I'm pleased they stopped the run. There were a few fit and finish issues with early Geminis so glad to see the focus on quality this time round. A few weeks will be worth it to get a decent Cosmo.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Anyone tried the lenovo M14 usb screen?

Hoping for higher capacity 3rd party replacement batteries in the future...
Unfortunately Planet did not include a larger one with the Gemini or the Cosmo...

You think a 4000mAh battery woudl last at least a day though - the screen must be an absolute power hog??

Update From:

Customer Care (Planet Computers)
Sep 4, 12:53 WEST

"Unfortunately, we have not yet been provided with information on when there will be a fix. All we can say and know is that both Planet and Mediatek are looking into the issue to try and find a fix for it.

As it stands right now, reverting to Android 7 would the best stable choice.

We're sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Kind regards,
Customer Care Team"

...and so it goes from nice toy to useless (as a cell phone) POS.

There must be a battery calibration issue with the Gemini - this is my experience...
- on Nougat, sometimes I'd plug it in and wake up the next day and the battery hadn't charged but was super hot. Bizarre.
. Sometimes on Oreo, I'll see the phone randomly turn off without warning.
- Other times the battery will drain to zero super fast, and yet when I plug it into charge (whilst off) will sometimes register as 40-50% full. The OS and battery are out of kilter.
- I rarely get more than 8 hrs before I have to charge it again (Oreo seems even worse then Nougat for power utilisation) - I'd expect 2 days of usage out of a 4400mAh battery...

I can't help but think all of this is related. There is something not right about the way the Gemini has been set up - I think it really needs to be optimised.

Whilst Planet figure this out, I've tried draining my battery to zero, restarting a few times until the Gemini turns itself off, and then charging from zero to 100% with the phone off. I then disconnect the charger and turn the phone on. Hopefully the phone will register a full charge, if not I plug it in whilst on until 100% is reached. This seems to have helped a bit but it's not 100%.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Battery usage on Oreo

I have the same issues as you have, but I am still wondering if that is Oreo or actually the physical state and age of the battery. My Gemini dates from June 2018.

Mine is a new x27  a replacement for one of the early x25 units - same on both

Does anyone else have an issue with battery life on their Gemini on Oreo 8.1?

Things I've noticed

- battery usage is worse than with Nougat - can not get more than a few hrs out of it
- occasionally turning itself off even when the battery has charge
- sudden battery drain - like 50% disappears in 30 mins
- misreporting battery charge - Android thinks its got 0% left and turns off, when I plug the charger in with the device off it reports 28% - its as though the OS and the battery are out of sync

It's really frustrating. It's like the calibration and optimization on 8 is totally out of whack...?
While sharing what I've experienced may not solve your issue, it might be useful to know that I haven't had any of the above issues. If my battery drain went up with Oreo, it wasn't enough for me to notice. If what you describe would be common, we'd probably have heard a lot more about it here. For reference, after getting Oreo, I did at one time charge my Gemini to 100% and kept it in flight mode (with "Intelligent power saving standby" on but "Battery saver" off), only using it for brief notes. I used 5-6% battery per day, until, after 14 days and 2.7h of screen-on.time, I had 25% battery left, so, apparently, Oreo on a Gemini CAN use very little power.

Regarding your issue, a Gemini actually consuming half a normal battery charge in half an hour, would get quite hot. If yours does heat up during the sudden drains, I'd suspect faulty software, and would recommend running a reputable malware scanner just in case (I got a malware-laden update via Google Play once, so, while unlikely, it can happen). If it doesn't heat up, I'd suspect the battery and/or the battery meter (though you could still also have a software problem).

Thanks Daniel - I'm going to see if I can do a full battery discharge/recharge/recalibration - hopefully this will sort it.
There seems to be a few more reports in [a href=\'index.php?showtopic=35533\']this post[/a] regarding Geminis suddenly turning off and/or reporting weird battery levels, so it seems you're not alone in this, though their problems does not seems to be limited to Oreo. One user had success with deliberately running the battery very low, turning off the Gemini off and recharged it fully. This may of course be hand to do, if Android thinks the battery is empty and keeps shutting down too soon. Anyway, while deeply discharging Li-ion batteries often, may be detrimental to their longevity, doing it once if the battery meter seems inaccurate, may help recalibrate the charge controller.

Other than that, I can only really suggest trying a factory reset, and if that doesn't help, sending basically your post above to Planet Computers support at hello@planetcom.co.uk and be prepared to send your device for service.
