Gemini PDA - Android / Re: Newbie Here!
« on: August 02, 2023, 04:04:46 pm »
Only OS that receives updates is Sailfish as far as I am aware, but it is rather being maintained rather than being developed on.

It is really not bad at all, and I also bought a license to support development, but the volunteers who contribute on apps like to work on newer devices is my impression.
There may be potential for running android apps, but last time I checked a few pieces were still missing.

Gemini PDA - Linux / Re: Gemian repository (or updated image) for Gemini?
« on: December 26, 2022, 11:59:09 am »
My impression is that Planet Computer have indeed abandoned the Gemini, for both Android and Linux operating systems.

I have the same impression and installed sailfish as it gets updates.
unfortunately the linux command line tools can be troublesome to get installed especially if requiring dependencies.
Sailfish does not officialy support android on this model, and wayland requires more tinkering than I am comfortable with.
The HDMI dongle from planet doesnt work as it did on android 8, and neither does the fm radio.
I havent tried puting a sim card in, so notsure about phone capabilities.

If the newer linux version was supporting gemini, I would give it a try for sure.

Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / Re: Current State of Sailfish on Gemini PDA
« on: December 11, 2022, 11:30:47 am »
@idc, that is not so much space, did you partition it for multiboot?
if you dont mind wiping it, you can flash a fresh sailfish on it: https://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.php/Gemini_Firmware

as for waydroid, I am wishing too, but unless you can convince some opensource developers, you probably need to learn how to compile kernel modules ( I am a bit new to that, so couldnt help you)

4
I don't know enough about kernel patches to do it without some kind reference guide to at least something similar. The previous links I posted are still the best resources I could find, please feel free to add more links if you find relevant information.

Short update: I have 4.4.0.64 on PDA and inserted a SIM for some tests.
After boot (regardles boot or reboot) the ofono.service did not work.
No SIM card is shown.
Restarting the ofono.service via systemctl, everything is fine. The SIM card works as expectet.
This seems to be a known bug also occured on some sony devices - as i read on sailfish forum ...
I use my gemini witout simcard so havent tried ofono, but you should let them know on the sailfish forums since it is directly related to the OS, and some devs may want to correct this

Has anyone tried https://waydro.id/ ?

as far as I can tell, a few modules are missing, and can possibly be installed.

The following is my process until I got stuck:

*Starting from a fresh official Sailfish 4.4.0.64 installation
*Signed in to my jolla account
*Enabled developer mode
* allow install from other sources

First choice, CHUM or CHUM-gui?
I am not sure what is better, I used gui, and looks like it worked fine

* installed sailfishos-chum-gui for arm (got the direct link from https://chumrpm.netlify.app/ )

in a terminal using either pkcon or zypper:

devel-su pkcon refresh

Second choice WayDroid Settings or Wayrdroid Runner ?
from https://github.com/sailfishos-open/waydroid#user-usage it boils down to slow and better integration vs faster and worse integration ... I went with runner

devel-su pkcon install waydroid-runner
[Y]

this installed:
python3-gbinder, waydroid-gbinder-config-hybris, waydroid-runner, waydroid sensors

now, when initiating waydroid, it looks like some modules are missing:

devel-su waydroid init

Failed to load binder driver
modprobe: FATAL: Module binder_linux not found in directory /lib/modules/3/18.41
ERROR: Binder node "vndbinder" for waydroid not found

it looks like something called anbox-vndbinder,anbox-hwbinder are missing (from linux kernel??)

according to https://github.com/sailfishos-open/waydroid#porter-tasks the kernel needs to be built with certain requirements.

if I go to https://docs.anbox.io/userguide/install_kernel_modules.html there is some mention of binder linux, but that is for debian. (I see some similar instructions for arch: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Waydroid#DKMS_modules )

It seems this whole development is quite new, and there is some other interest for waydroid on gemini:

Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / Re: whatsapp on sailfish
« on: May 27, 2022, 04:17:28 pm »
Did you see that there is now waydroid support for sailfish?

there are two ways to install it, either a full virtual android environment, or one pr. app basis.

I just flashed sfos 4.4 and installed CHUM which as far as I can see is the newest solution for an app store.

I managed to install both solutions for waydroid, but havent gotten virtual android up and running.

if you are curious, check out nick's linux experiment youtube channel to see waydroid in action on a standard linux installlation

Cool! thanks for the tip!

Meanwhile I came across VMware Horizon, which has the following troubles:

: becomes ;
{ becomes [
} becomes ]
+ becomes =
/ becomes ?
_ becomes -
< becomes ,
> becomes .
~ becomes `
" becomes '

This is only true for the internal keyboard, and an external one works, but an external keyboard kind of defeats the purpose of the gemini when on the go :/

(I have US english layout btw)

Hi I also came to this conclusion, I can reccomend an app from the f droid store to do the rotation, last post here: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=35791.0

cheers :)

looking for this: https://gemian.thinkglobally.org/archive-key.asc

I dont remember having any problems,

have you followed theses instructions?

https://gemian.thinkglobally.org/

(if not you should consider using https instead of regular http)

Check out "US International" as a keyboard layout, you will need to learn the position of the characters you need, then you just hold ALT for the given letter, like e.g. ü and you get it directly (no pre-push to first add ¨ and then u) if you need uppercase, you just hold ALT + SHIFT.

this may be a viable alternative for you

cheers

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Re: Bricked pda on Factory reset
« on: November 25, 2020, 06:42:13 am »
oof.

Did you try booting it up while holding down:

esc?

silver voice assist button?

esc + silver voice assist button?

if none of that responds you could take a look here https://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.php/Restoring_Gemini_4G_x27_firmware

I had trouble with mine after having a singleboot Sailfish installation, and I could not even flash with my Mac and Virtualbox like I used to do it. I tried a few linux distros as well as windows 10, and I only got success while flashing in windows 7.

Gemini PDA - Android / Re: Displaylink and Android 8.1
« on: November 24, 2020, 09:44:21 am »
Hi all,
in case anyone cares, I discovered the fix for misrotation of HDMI output;

go to Settings > Apps & Notifications, App bar, Disable.

Obviously, you lose the app bar, so to get this going, you need to find alternatives for what you were using the app bar for & whatever features are otherwise integrated here.

It looks like there are Apps from F-Droid that allows some rotation customization as well as some app shortcut drawers, I haven't checked any of them out yet though. [edit]Reasonable alternative to screen rotation: Tap 'n' Turn (Confirm before the screen orientation gets applied) - https://f-droid.org/packages/com.gabm.screenrotationcontrol[/edit]

@Varti, I decided to update this topic instead of the other since it is an android specific solution only

Cheers.

Gemini PDA - Android / VNC client not passing all fn buttons through
« on: November 23, 2020, 11:09:30 am »
Hi all,

I have a raspberry pi 4 with usb-over-ethernet host config [1]

It is possible to vnc directly into the local IP using RealVNC android client.

I am amazed how easy it is to get access to the raspberry pi OS desktop this way, unfortunately most of the fn-keys seem to not honor that the fn button is pressed, and thus, many symbols are unavailable.

I couldn't find any info on VNC clients in the search section, and thought I'd try my luck if any of y'all had some ideas to what the issue is.

Gemini PDA - Linux / Re: Final call for TP3
« on: November 23, 2020, 10:59:19 am »
I think Nikita sent it to Davide a wee while back and its now on the new v8 partition tool: https://support.planetcom.co.uk/partitionTool8.html

I've not managed to test it yet as I updated my Ubuntu on my desktop and it won't flash any more for me. I'm probably still working on other stuff for a couple of weeks but will probably get back to working on TP4 (buster based) in due course.
@Adam Boardman, long time ago you wrote this ;).
I know you're very busy - but any thoughts making a TP4 (buster based) ::)?

Many thanks Gabriel

If such an update is in the making that would be amazing :)
