6000 - Tosa / Source For Ea-bl09 Battery
« on: September 20, 2006, 11:23:24 pm »
My SL6000 is starting to show signs that the battery is dying.  It doesn't last as long on a full charge as it once did.

I did some quick searching this evening looking for replacment batteries but only found one at Streamline for $150!

Do any of you know of other locations that might be cheaper?

Thanks!

Will you be able to address the fonts for the SL6000?  Where the numbers should be shown, all I see are squares.

I tried it on my SL5600 and it shows the fonts right but you can only see part of the panel 6x6 instead of all 9x9.  My daughter would love to have this for the 5600 and I'd like to see it work on the 6000 if we can get the font issue worked out.

I have to second the Corsair tool.  That and Kino work great on my 6000.

Software / Database Program For Data "tracking"
« on: December 12, 2005, 11:39:07 pm »
I've been using Portabase.  It can do an export to comma separated values (CVS) files too.  You can set default values for columns.  True though about not doing computations on columns.

With Hancom sheet, you should be able to use formulas that reference cells =sum(a1:a3), etc.   Kind of like what you'd do with Excel.

SQLite is more of a database management engine for storing the data - you need to find or write a front-end application.

I wrote some for my SL5600.  What worked for me was to use the standard JVM that came on the Sharp ROM on the Zarurus.

For my workstations, I used Netbeans.  For Z apps, I limited the screens to only use AWT (not swing).  The J2SE SDK v 1.4 worked for me on the workstation (I didn't have problems copying the class files to the Z and running them as is).  One item that I like about Netbeans is their panel design tool for building the UI for my apps.

You need to limit the panel max sizes to fit within the Z's smaller screens.  Sharp had some specs on their developer site when it was up and running.  I think that you had to take the max size of 320 and then subtract for the menu bar and the task bar at the bottom.

My dev scenario was something like this.  I had my Z hooked in to my network and it was running VNC server.  I had Samba enabled too.

My workstation was running VNC viewer displaying Z's desktop.  I had a Windows explorer session up with the Z's samba shared mounted as a drive.  THe workstation had Netbeans running.  I could use it to tweak & compile the class files and then used explorer to copy them to the Zaurus.  I would swap to VNC and use my workstation's keyboard to run my app on the Zaurus.

This isn't exactly the same thing but I'm using QTPlot on both my 6000 & 5600 machines.  With it, x**2 gives you a plot of X squared.

With pdaXrom & kopi, is it still possible to synch your calendar with MS Outlook?

General Discussion / Your old Z

My 5600 is on loan to my daughter.  I set her up so that she could check email or IM with it.  She also likes to take it along on vacations to work on her short stories.

You could always build the old Zaurus in to a RC airplane - here's what one guy at IBM did... (wouldn't it be cool to have a job where you got paid to play with this stuff!)

I can remeber the VCR with the cable remote but prior to that, I can remember BEING the REMOTE!      Kids have it so easy now compared to what it was like in my day.  Jeez, I'm feeling old now.

Software / Small Database On Zaurus (c3000) And Mandriva

Looks like Portabase has a version for Linux but not in an RPM installer format.  Their project page on sourceforge http://sourceforge.net/projects/portabase shows support for Linux distros & the X11 display.  Looks like you could use the Tar/GZip version from the download page - would require a little more manual work.

MySQL might work on both the Zaurus and Mandrake but you don't get a GUI with it.  TheKompany sells a port of the ReKall app that has been ported to the Zaurus platorm.  See http://thekompany.com/embedded/tkcrekall/ for the Zaurus version.  Their URL for the desktop version is http://thekompany.com/products/rekall/.

I have not tried the tkc products on either environments - I just remembered reading about them on other posts.  Good luck.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / 6000 Current "release"?
« on: September 02, 2005, 05:01:19 pm »
One item I'm anxious to hear about is whether you can synch KO/PI with Outlook?  Right now, I have to synch with Sharp DTM and then use the Sharp synch software to synch up with Outlook.  Without the Sharp software can you still do a synch?

I'm also a heavy user of the Sharp Notes app because it also synchs with Outlook.  Is there something like that available?

I'm anxious to give pdaXrom a try but I don't want to give up my PIM functions and synching with my office computer.

Are you running in landscape mode when you try this?  Maybe that would make a difference?  I thought there was a discussion on one of the old forums about this package and I thought that I heard someone got it working.  But, I don't recall either what was done to make it happen.  I looked over the c3270 manual on the web and don't see anything off hand that would help out.  c3270 manual

Security and Networking / An Easy Way To Mount Samba Shares?
« on: August 20, 2005, 11:33:44 am »
I created scripts that mount or unmount SMB shares (one for each PC or Zaurus).  In this case, I'm mounting my SL5600's share ("zephyrus" is its machine name in my /etc/hosts file).  I check the /mnt/smb directory, if it's empty, then I do a mount, if not, then I un-mount it.

The script uses the OPIE-SH package to display a dialog box telling you what it did.

Any messages generated are sent to a log file that can be checked later.

I also use the "sudo" package to run the mount.

I then created an icon and added it to my SL6000 desktop so I can tap it to run it.

Code: [Select]
#--------------------------------
# Mount the Zephyrus over wiFi
# 2004-12-18 -  r.l. stoner
#--------------------------------

(
checkit=`ls /mnt/smb/ | wc -l`
#echo $checkit
if [ $checkit -ne 0 ]
   then
   echo "UnMounting Zephyrus home ..."
   sudo umount /mnt/smb
   /home/QtPalmtop/bin/opie-sh -m -w -t "Zephyrus Toggled" -M "Zephyrus/home un-mounted." -g
   exit 0
else
   echo "Mounting... Zephyrus"
   sudo smbmount //zephyrus/home /mnt/smb -o username=rick,password=xxx
   /home/QtPalmtop/bin/opie-sh -m -I -t "Zephyrus Toggled" -M "Zephyrus/home Mounted." -g
   exit 0
fi
) > /tmp/domntzeph.log

#--- end of script ---#
