Gemini PDA - Android / Re: Android Auto
« on: November 15, 2022, 09:30:49 pm »
It looks like my reply didn't go through :(

Anyhow, I use the Gemini PDA with Android Auto.  I have the wifi version of the Gemini and have a rooted version of Android v8.1.0 installed from Planet Computers.  I mostly used the waze app and connect to the wifi in my car.  I tried to separate Android Auto from the apps I normally use by using a work profile and the shelter app.  Unfortunately, it looks like Android Auto needs to run in the main profile and not in the work profile, so I had to switch things around.  I still don't really trust the work profile thing to separate my apps, but oh well.

I used to use an old Android v6 phone for my car's navigation, but the phone is no longer supported with Android Auto.  That was a bummer and got me wondering if the cars have their own schedule for planned obsolescence like the phones do.  The phone still works fine as it should, but I cannot use it like I did before since it was no longer supported by Android Auto.  That's why I use the Gemini PDA now...not sure for how much longer.

One of the things I don't like about using the Gemini is that I have to click on all these permissions every time I plug in the device.  It probably does that since I don't use a google account and I am on a rooted version of Android.  If I used the device like I'm supposed to with a proper google account and access to everything, it would probably work right away.

I wonder if my car would be considered obsolete in a few years after it can no longer be updated or be able to work with my device.  I wonder if there is a DIY workaround for using the car's screen after it is considered obsolete.  There's probably some smart cookie out there looking into this issue already.  I don't like the idea of my car being dependent on my phone's software/OS version and vice versa.  It worked great when the car was new and my phone was fairly new and everything work.  Now I feel like there is an expiration.

The current version of Android Auto states that it is for car screens only on the Gemini.  I think previous versions allowed for viewing the map on the Gemini screen, which was good since it has a larger screen than my phone.  Now I can only use Android Auto on a car with a screen than on the Gemini.  Good thing my car is still compatible with this version of Android Auto...unsure for how much longer.  This is not the case with my current mobile phone (Unihertz Titan)  I can use Android Auto either plugged into my car screen or view the map on the phone itself.  Again, unsure of for how much longer.

Another thing I dislike about Android Auto is that previously, you were able to use the touch screen on the car's dash while you were driving, like if you needed to input an address or switch to freeway routes.  Now you cannot even do anything on the screen unless you are at a full stop.  Yeah, I get the safety factors, etc., but the passenger cannot even put in a new route or anything until the vehicle is at a full stop.  Annoying.

Anyhow, hope this helps.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Re: Take off screen protector?
« on: July 20, 2022, 07:27:08 pm »
I _finally_ removed my screen protector after using the Gemini since it was released!  (I was an early backer.)  I remembered reading this post when I first received the device since I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be removed.  I had kept the protector on since and glad to have found the post again now.  I forgot whether it was supposed to be removed or not.  The protector seemed to have melded with the screen and was not easily removable with my fingernail.  I ended up taking an x-acto blade to it to lift the film.

What a world of difference!  There were so many marks from the keys that all of them left an impression on the protector.  My terminal is _so_ black and the colors are so bright.  Looks like I have a brand new device and it is so much more responsive with a stylus (I don't like touching my screen.)  The keyboard on the other hand, shows heavy wear and has worn smooth on some of the more frequently used keys.  Looks like my next task is to detail the keys.  The "new" screen experience should hold me over until I finally get my Astro upgrade.

General Discussion / Android Work Profile and Sandboxing Apps
« on: March 20, 2022, 03:44:18 am »
Does anybody here have any experience with Android Work Profile and any of the sandboxing apps out there?

The reason I ask is because my current employer has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program instead of handing out a company-provided mobile like my previous employer.  I am used to carrying two devices, but I have been entertaining the thought of carrying one device with 2 sim cards (possibly the Astro Slide.)

So far, I have found the Island app in the Google Play Store and Shelter in f-droid.  I'm not sure if there are others out there or which is the better one to use.  I just installed Shelter on my Gemini wifi running the stock OS that it came with (Android 7.x) and have not done much testing yet.

Has any of you had any experience with Android apps that uses work profile to separate personal apps and data from work on the same devices?  Does it really work and keep things separate ?  Are there any things I should look out for with having work and personal on the same device?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Zaurus - Hardware discussion / SL-3100 MicroDrive to CF mod
« on: September 21, 2019, 07:16:19 pm »
This was probably discussed way back...does anybody know if it is possible to swap out the SL-3100 MicroDrive with a Compact Flash Drive?  I did this way back with a Palm LifeDrive, which also has a MicroDrive.
Anybody know how difficult this is or if there are things to look out for?

Thanks,

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / DisplayLink?

I tried installing DisplayLink and hooking the Gemini upto a Sentio SuperBook (essentially a clamshell monitor and keyboard that should mirror a phone via a USB-C port using DisplayLink).
I had no luck with either of the USB ports on the gemini PDA. Has anyone else tried this or something similar?

Hi Steven_P,

I am not familiar with the Sentio SuperBook, but I havee been able to use DisplayLink with the Gemini PDA in Android.  I used a USB-C to USB 3.0 Type A adapter.  Check out this post:

https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=35326

I also use an old Plugable USB Docking station, which uses DisplayLink, but ethernet doesn't work.  I ended up adding a separate USB ethernet adapter to one of the 6 USB ports that it comes with.  Also, the audio on the docking station works.  I'll have to look up the model #.

Miracast also works as an option as well for wireless displays...and you can charge at the same time!

Gemini PDA - Android / Termux

Termux too seems a bit weird.  Its default resolv.conf uses '8.8.8.8'
Erm, sorry if I'm missing something obvious (and for replying to an old topic!), but my Termux doesn't seem to have a resolv.conf file — I can't find that in /etc nor anywhere in the filesystem, nor even anything similar…

If I create an /etc/resolv.conf file, will it use that?  Or is some other set-up needed?

I did not have this file either, but when I ran nslookup, it wanted me to install the package dnsutils, which had a dependency of resolv-conf.
I have the file there now (/data/data/com.termux/files/usr/etc), but changed the name server to something other than google.

Code: [Select]
nameserver 129.250.35.250
nameserver 129.250.35.251

Now, when I run nslookup, the default name server for lookups is 129.250.35.250:

Code: [Select]
$ nslookup
Server:         129.250.35.250
Address:        129.250.35.250#53

Non-authoritative answer:
www.oesf.org    canonical name = vhost.ibiblio.org.
Name:   vhost.ibiblio.org
Address: 152.19.134.41

Perhaps the name lookup is specific to termux and not the entire OS.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Instability
« on: October 12, 2018, 02:38:53 am »
I'm thinking about some strategically placed hot glue dots.  I've used hot glue for rugs before to keep them from slipping on hardwood floors.  Maybe it will work for the Gemini.  Has anybody tried this yet?

I have this one, but it is not thin.  It is actually a wallet as well:

It's on sale right now.  They also have a leather one.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Perk/Accessory delivery?
« on: October 04, 2018, 03:00:38 pm »
FYI, I checked with support regarding the status on my Connectivity Pack yesterday and they emailed me back right away.  They said that they recently received the necessary stock and is requesting to have my order dispatched.  I should have tracking info in 3 business days.  I ordered the pack with my device back in January and received the device in June, sans pack.  Hopefully I will received it soon!

Gemini PDA - Android / Apps:Databases
« on: August 22, 2018, 02:37:27 am »
I haven't used too many databases in Android, but the one I've been using since the PalmOS days is DDH Software's HanDBase.  They have a version for Android and iPhones/iPad.  My PalmOS databases can still sync with Android and Windows client.  I think you can even have it sync with MS Access, ODBC, etc.  It's not free, but is pretty solid for my use.  They have demos for different platforms on their site:

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Displaylink adapter works (under Android)!
« on: July 04, 2018, 02:53:31 am »
OK, I just tried a Samsung SyncMaster U70 7-inch USB monitor and an AOC e1659Fwu 16-inch USB monitor.  Both worked with the DisplayLink Presenter using only 1 USB adapter without external power (aside from the left-hand Gemini USB-C port.)  Now if I could only change the resolution...or even extend the desktop to the monitor.  I don't really use Android much, but if anybody knows if/how the desktop can be extended, it would be greatly appreciated!

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Displaylink adapter works (under Android)!

I tried a (random dual output USB 3.0 which I bought several years ago) Displaylink adapter on the right side. And it worked flawlessly after installing the Displaylink app :-) Only problem is that in OpenGL ES apps the external display doesn't work (Tested with supertuxkart).
It even works in combination with the Gemini Hub and without a external power supply.

So there is finally a way to have power, USB and external display at the same time :-)

I'll add the type of the adapter tomorrow when I have access to it again.

Thanks for this, mifritscher!  It got me thinking.  I picked up a USB-C to USB-A adapter from Best Buy this evening since I have not received my accessory pack yet and I wanted to see if I could attach a hub.  Well, that worked and since I saw your post this evening, I tried my Plugable UD-3000 docking station in Android.  I was able to get it working with the DisplayLink Presenter app.  I have it attached to an HDMI monitor using DVI to HDMI adapter.  Any ideas on how to change the resolution?

Also, I have a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse attached, which works as well.  I still haven't figured out the ethernet yet.  Not sure if that will work, but not a biggie since I have wifi.  Oh, also the audio jack works as well without installing anything.  I have not yet tried the mic.

If anybody has any ideas regarding the ethernet, it would be great if you shared.

Thanks!

And yes, I did make the classic mistake of trying to turn it on using the camera button.

I received my wifi only unit earlier this week.  I wonder if there is a way to reconfigure the button for power rather than Google Assist.  That would be cool.
