Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Installing Opie
« on: July 28, 2005, 10:44:31 pm »
Ok I have opie up again (manually, cf card is in the mail), but now I can't get my wireless card to work.  cardctl ident corrently identifies my card but nothing seems to think that I have a wlan0 interface (ifconfig, iwconfig, ...).  I'm posting here because I probably need another package.

ipkg list_installed | grep wlan:
opie-networksettings-wlanplugin - 1.2.0-r0
opie-wlansetup-help-en - 1.2.0-r0
task-opie-wlan - 1.0-r23
wlan-ng-modules - 0.2.1-pre23-r1
wlan-ng-utils - 0.2.1-pre23-r1

This was discussed extensively in a thread I saw recently.  I believe the 5500 has a jack that is slightly smaller than the 1/8" mini.  Supposedly it can auto detect whether stereo headphones, or headphones plus mic are plugged into it.  You need a head set like for a cellphone which just has one plug.  I'll try to find the thread when I get home from work and link it in.

i use VOIP on my 5500 and it works great. i wrote this some time ago on my stumbleupon blog. here ya go:

Great VOIP hook up!

Packet8 packet8.net [packet8.net] ) is a provider of broadband phone service for business and residential users. It works great with my Zaurus SL-5500 linuxdevices.com/articles/AT2134869242.html [linuxdevices.com] ), Free World Dialup pulver.com/fwd/ [pulver.com] ), and KP/Pi pi-sync.net/html/kp_pi.html [pi-sync.net] ). Basicly, anywhere there is free wifi(like everywhere) I can use my Zaurus with the KP/Pi program to dial out with my FWD account. I can call my Packet8 number which in turn can be forwarded to any number of my choosing via a web interface.

Voila! Unlimited calling to anywhere in the US and Canadia fo' free right from my Zaurus.

YeeHaw!

That sounds very cool. Just out of curiosity, what are you using for a microphone? My Zaurus has a single headphone jack, which as far as I can tell, has a single 1/8" stereo headphone jack. My headphones with the boom mike has two plugs, one for the headphones and one for the mike. Is there some specialized device or adapter needed to get the mike to work?

Thanks,

zmef - why do you use P8 and FWD?  can you not dial out through the p8 network with KP/Pi?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Installing Opie

Found another thread with as much answer as may be afforded.

Sounds like the reflash is the only solution.

excellent! thanks, coredump.  I added the machine feed to ipkg.conf.  I got task-opie-core installed the z tries to start up opie again.  So, I'm back to my original problem of the "bus error".
on startup:

Starting Opie in 5 seconds... press key to interrupt.
Starting Opie....
Bus error

then it gives me a command line.

hope this one is as easy and enlightening to solve as the first question.

thank you so much, i think i'm getting back on track.  i tried to install task-opie-base:

:~# ipkg install task-opie-base
ERROR: Cannot satisfy the following dependencies for task-opie-base:
         opie-taskbar
:~# ipkg install opie-taskbar
Cannot find package opie-taskbar.

after hunting around online, i'm not sure why this package isn't available. do I need to specifya a different feed?

I know just enough to get myself into trouble...

Gleeful with having just succeeded in getting my internet connection to work,  I proceeded to use ipkg to install all of the opie applications in the OZ feed.  I'm not sure what happeneded, but when I rebooted, it said that I had run out of memory, and when it tried to start opie it failed and said "bus error".  Still having a command line I tried to uninstall as much of the stuff as possible, and while this solved the bus error, I don't seem to have opie anymore.  well , I have these packages starting with "opie":

opie-advancedfm-pics - 1.2.0-r0 - Opie Advanced Filemanager
opie-button-settings-pics - 1.2.0-r0 - Device-buttons settings dialog
opie-datebook - 1.2.0-r0 - A datebook/appointment manager
opie-networksettings - 1.2.0-r0 - Opie Network Settings
opie-pics - 1.2.0-r1 -
opie-today - 1.2.0-r0 - Today screen application

on boot up, the Z doesn't try to start opie.  do I have enough of opie to start it manually? do I need to change a boot script?
If not, what packages do I need to install?  The opie and oz websites have been a bit lacking to me thus far.

spec's:
SL-5500
OZ 3.5.3
opie 1.2 (originally)
...
usb->en to Mac (10.3)

don't have a cf card so I can't reflash it yet.

Mac Issues / Firewall-settings For Os X Internetsharing Via Usb
« on: July 20, 2005, 05:08:17 pm »
/etc/resolv.conf on the mac (which can do all the web stuff fine) looks something like this (im at work right now):

domain no_domain_set.invalid
nameserver 192.168.0.1
nameserver 192.168.0.0

------------
EDIT:  So, I think I fixed it.  I added:
nameserver 192.168.0.1 to the /etc/resolv.conf file on the zaurus.  thank you everyone.

thanks for being patient with my questions...still need more help...

so I got the IP for ns1.ameritech.net and added that as the first DNS.  now "ns1.ameritech.net" seems to be the only address that I can ping by name.  pinging any IP still works.  tried a few other nameservers, but same problem.
what should /etc/resolv.conf look like at the end of the day?

This seems more like a general "using the internet" issue, than a zaurus problem, but hopefully someone can point me along.

thanks.  I figured out su, although i'm running in root right now anyways (eep!).

How do I find my ISP's name server?  DHCP isn't showing me a dns address in my mac's control panel.

sudo route add -host 192.168.129.1 usbd0

and

sudo route add default gw 192.168.129.1

It should be su instead sudo.

The nameerver to be added in /etc/resolv.conf should be your ISP's name server.

Happy Surfing!

thanks martin.  I used those two commands and now the zaurus can ping other IPs.  however, i can't ping names.  I suppose i need to tell it where to find a dns server.  My ethernet connection does not list a DNS in that TCP/IP pane.

Hi,
I'm trying this too, but haven't gotten as far.
I installed the USB ethernet driver, gave my Z and my mac manual IPs (192.168.129.xxx).  I can ssh back and forth between the two, but the Z can't find the internet (ping attempts give: address unreachable).  I turned on internet sharing (of regular ethernet, to usb ethernet adapter) and my firewall is allowing port 80.
I've been hunting around and I think I might need to turn on ip forwarding on the z. (I found a page describing setting up a pppd on the usb and setting up a NAT using the iptables command which appearantly my Z doesn't have yet.)

The Z has OpenZaurus (really minimal, the person i bought it from flashed it) and the mac has 10.3 and is connected to a DSL modem.

Hi,

I'm trying to connect my Zaurus SL5500 (Sharp ROM 3.13 + Cacko Kernel patch) to the WWW and for the first step I want to use the USB/TCP-IP connection.

My Powerbook is connected via WLAN to our DSL router, I have internet sharing enabled on the PB and the Z can ping IP-numbers and urls like www.avm.de successfully.

However, the Z can only load a web page in Opera, if I disable the firewall on the PowerBook (OS 10.3.9).
I don't want to disable it completely - does anybody know how I have to configure the firewall for getting Opera on the Z working?

Best regards

Martin
