Thank you Varti.  That is good to know.  Thank you also for moving this to get more visibility.

I gues that a second way to ask my question would be poll-like.  If you use your gemini on a fairly regular basis (daily or almost daily), how long have you been using it with only minor adjustments and/or how long before its functionality broke down and forced you to get another device?

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / How robust is a Gemini?

I am just stumbling across the gemini and like what I see.  I am interested in knowing how long it will last under daily use.  In particular, I have had clam shells in the past and the hinges and/or  screen ribbons often fail.  Is it common for a gemini used daily to last for several years without this kind of failure?

I also stop by every once in a while to see what's going on.  I still have my Z that I use occasionally, but have migrated through the nanonote and now an openpandora for use daily at work.  The Z is a nice machine because of the keyboard and the fact that the lcd ribbon (cable ... whatever is there) is designed well.  On the nanonote the ribbon going through the hinge would eventually rip, resulting the screen no longer working.  It started to show up as colored lines through the screen.  This is now showing up on my pandora as well, so I will have to replace the ribbon.  I think that the pandora developers are aware of it and making changes.  I have never experienced this problem on the zaurus.  Of course with the swivel the design is different.

The community with the pandora is strong, much like what there was with the zaurus several years ago.

Just wondering, were you ever able to repair the torn Nanonote cable?
I did not ever fix the cable on the nanonote.  I did not try very hard.  The people at pandora actually sell the ribbon cables and there is a video describing how to replace it.  I did not see similar support at nanonote (though I didn't look real hard).

The nanonote was nice because of its size.  It fits nicely into pretty much any pocket.  With the pandora I have to wear cargo pants to comfortably carry it on my body.  On the other hand the pandora screen has better resolution and I am able to put a more advanced os on the pandora than was on the nanonote.

Ubuntu / Installing Zubuntu

Hello,

I have 3100 that I am  trying to install Zubunt.  Ihave tries numerous different SD cards and everytime I boot with them it states no SD card found.

It's been a while since I installed Zubuntu though I use it daily . . .

Have you tried putting the Fat stuff on a CF card?  I don't remember the SD being formatted fat.  I do vaguely remember that the sd card was a no go in a situation where the CF worked, and perhaps it was with this initial startup stuff.

Good luck.

Still no news? Anyone got theirs yet?

They have started producing the first batch.  This will be my next portable when my c1000 needs replacing.

Maybe this topic would be better off moved to the new dedicated NetWalker section.

This is discussion of flash on zubuntu, which seems to make sense here.

Ubuntu / Can Boot Zubuntu From Sd But Not From Cf Card
« on: December 22, 2009, 03:39:13 am »

I believe the kexec kernel provided by omegamoon simply does not look at CF cards. I now flashed zImage-kexecboot-2.6.26-r12-c7x0.bin from Angström and it does find zubuntu on the CF card and starts to boot it   . But then it stops with something like "waiting for root /dev/hda1"  .

I assume this is because some module is not yet loaded at this stage. I will try to locate the module and put it into /etc/modules.

Has this issue been resolved?  I would like to multiboot from a cf card.  In other words:

   1)  Has the kexec kernel provided by omegamoon been revised to recognize CF cards?
or
   2)  Does the Angström image get past "waiting for root /dev/hda1" with Zubuntu?

Thanks.

Ubuntu / Back Quote
« on: August 22, 2009, 02:55:22 pm »
I couldn't find a back quote on the keyboard.  So I edited both /etc/keymap.2.6 and /etc/keymap.2.4 and put "grave" in the <function>-q spot.  I tried loadkeys but that didn't seem to work for me.  After reboot I got a back quote when pressing <function>-q.

I am not sure which file  (2.6 or 2.4) gave the proper results.  I am little rushed now to test it again.

Ubuntu / Usb Networking

Did somebody know how to activate the USB networking ?

FWIW:  Whenever I plug in my usb ethernet adapter I have to run this code:

[div class=\'codetop\']CODE[/div][div class=\'codemain\' style=\'height:200px;white-space:pre;overflow:auto\']echo -n 1 >/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-2/bConfigurationValue[/div]

Some recent advance in the system development sets a lower power  cutoff threshold that my adapter doesn't meet.  Thus the workaround.  I've never crashed using this workaround.  It has been covered in the forums.

(I am making a guess at your needs without knowing how much linux experience you have.)

Linux on your pc along with a card reader makes this easy.  (You can make a live disk to use if your pc is running windows.  Puppylinux works for me.)

Once running linux, use gparted to create the partition(s) you want on the card.  Then copy the files to be extracted there.  To extract use the "tar" command i.e. "tar -xzvf filename.tar.gz"
