Shame he couldn't be bothered to find out the ESC key wakes the phone before posting about this 'Major problem'.

Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / 3.0.2.8

I concur:  WiFi power usage has improved.

Power usage doesn't seem improved for me. With no SIM fitted and wifi enabled, my gemini went from 100% charge to dodo dead in less than 20hrs while sat on my desk unused.
I'm dissapointed, but I'm done wasting time on this device.

Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / SailfishOS 3.0.1.11 released by Jolla
« on: January 13, 2019, 05:32:16 am »
I broke my 3.0.0.8 install trying to upgrade last week, before these instructions were available. So I can confirm the instructions work just as well if applied to the 'standard' SFOS image from the Gemini website.

I note that from the 'desktop', the escape key works as a on-off as some others had wanted - I previously had to type Fn-Esc to switch off (which still seems more natural to me, but no complaints).
From inside apps like ToeTerm it doesn't switch off, so no loss of function there.
Also the silver button appears to work as on-off as well, so possibly/probably now works to answer calls as well?

A few more bits of info coming out ...

We chose a notch-less screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio, and minimal  bezels. Our device's footprint is smaller than most other 6-inch 18:9 phones, like the Nokia 7 Plus or Moto Z3. This doesn’t just reduce physical size, it also improves the typing experience.
Finally we decided to use an AMOLED panel instead of an LCD for more vibrant colours, deeper blacks, and fewer, thinner screen layers. We also chose a curved-edge screen to match the shape & contours of the main body. It’s important the device looks slick & feels comfortable at the same time!

Quote
It's a 18:9 ratio in 6", in another word it's the same panel as a 5.4-5.5" screen in 16:9. The screen is bigger due to less bezels. In measurements the device is quite narrower and slightly shorter than the Moto Z2 Play.
Thinking this way, it's a 5.4" of the traditional 16:9 ratio.
P.S: Being quite smaller than the Xperia XA2 Plus, which quite some users are happily using SFOS upon.

As for your questions, the Linux kernel will be 4.4+ for sure (tested 4.9). The update and driver is down to Qualcomm's support. But we will do our best.

Only a teaser website thus far, but there have been various discussions around this project on talk.maemo.org for more than a year.

Not too much detail in plain view, but a phone with slide/tilt keyboard in the N900 / N950 vein.
From ChenLiang Chen, the guy behind the failed Moto Mod Keyboard. There have been some teaser pics and specs on twitter, also linked or posted on t.m.o

Will ship with Android by default, but aims to allow Lineage, Sailfish, Maemo-Leste etc.

Objectively, it's obviously little more than vapourware right now, but Chen talks good sense and and has enough credibility in my view to make this the most promising device on the horizon right now, though I don't think I'll be spending any money until I can see a pretty functional Sailfish or Maemo build available.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / In search of a rugged case
« on: December 03, 2018, 03:26:38 pm »
As food for thought, you could consider this case I had custom made for my Gemini by a chinese ebay seller.
I'd already had a leather notebook cover from them, so I simply picked something close from their listings and emailed asking for a customised size.

Cost was so low it was daft not to try it (about 25 GBP delivered)
The leather is 2mm thick and the stitching is excellent.

I would like a slightly different design (e.g. tuck flap instead of popper) and for the price I would probably have experimented.
Wierdly (and sadly) the seller dropped off ebay shortly afterwards, went from 20 or so different products listed to none. but the possibilities are out there.

I'm confused...

The key is labelled as Fn-Esc = "Off" and that works as expected for me.

If it were mapped as just Esc for Off, that would (for me at least) be a waste of a key (and a useful one on a linux based machine.)

Same here on the licencing, but a number of factors could affect the update announcement...

Are you on the Early Access program (so already had 3.0.0.5 available)
I'm not sure of the phone schedule for checking updates, but its not constant or push AFAICS. My X currently says 'last checked 3 hours ago'. Also by default setting checks only when wifi is connected.
I don't know if it's changed but in the early days, updates weren't available to all devices at once (to reduce server load?) I don't know/remember if availability was segmented by area, account no, phase of moon or just the karma of the owner.

I found out about the release because my Xperia X announced the upgrade availability (I'm not using gemini as daily driver due to reliability issues - another story).
When I spotted it, there was already an announcement on the Jolla blog (blog.jolla.com) and I think it had already been mentioned on talk.maemo.org as well.

Since there's now a free demo of sfos X to download for XperiaX, and the change to X licence period, the split seems to be at the point of adding the paid-for apps now, AlienDalvik and MSExchange etc. Essentially stuff which Jolla has to pay licence fees on, AFAIUI.

I'm not usually bang up to date with all this stuff, I get most of my info from t.m.o usually.

Just to note, with the release of 3.0.0.8 yesterday...

Updating to 3.0.0.8 with ssu re 3.0.0.8 / version --dup seemed to work fine.
Got warning about packagemgr (?) crash but completed after retry.

Need to re-apply the fix for rotation.

It's worth doing as it fixes the layout of icons in the appl tray.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Gemini PDA - Accessories - Pouches/Covers
« on: October 16, 2018, 09:08:32 am »
I ordered the external camera to replace a dented cover on my gemini. 6 weeks in I'm still waiting for them to ship, so don't hold your breath on spare parts.

Will replacement metal parts become available eventually? My Gemini is showing to be surprisingly robust, but the top & bottom covers have a reasonable number of dings & dents. The perils of Warehouse work I guess.

Different colour options would be nice. Pink perchance?

Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / Sleep breaks WiFi?
« on: September 20, 2018, 09:23:54 am »
I seem to recall this was a problem on the community edition of SFOS for the Sony Xperia X as well - not sure if it ever got fixed, but it might be worth looking at some of the other SFOS sites to see, if you haven't already. (together.jolla.com, talk.maemo.org ?)

Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / Use case for silver button
« on: September 16, 2018, 08:00:07 am »
I tried it out quickly on Friday but it didn't work and I didn't have time to investigate.

It looks like my mce file went missing somehow, I've replaced it and now the silver button sends all apps to cover state as expected.
I can't make it answer the call though, it simply mutes the ringing for some reason.
I will play some more when I have some free time.
