Sharp ROMs / Package Manager Freezes Zaurus (cacko 1.23)
« on: May 27, 2006, 10:35:37 am »
I'm running Cacko 1.23 on an SL-C860 and am very satisfied with that. However, I would like to be able to update and install packages from the device itself.

I have a problem with Package Manager, which is started with the "Add/Remove Software" icon:
I can start the application, and press the "Install packages via networks" button. But if I press the "Package Servers" button and try to change or add feed servers, the Zaurus freezes up - completely! I cannot even ssh into it any longer, or do anything from a ssh session that was already running.

Any ideas?

Sharp ROMs / Cacko 1.23: 'top' Command Cannot Be Executed
« on: December 27, 2005, 12:44:36 pm »
I have a problem executing the 'top' command on an SL-C860 with Cacko 1.23 installed. It seems the binary file making up the 'top' utility is corrupted. Has anyone else here seen this?

This is what I experience:

root@zaurus:~# top
bash: /usr/bin/top: cannot execute binary file
root@zaurus:~# ls -l /usr/bin/top
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           16 Dec 22 19:11 /usr/bin/top -> /usr/bin.rom/top
root@zaurus:~# ls -l /usr/bin.rom/top
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        53476 Sep 15 08:46 /usr/bin.rom/top
root@zaurus:~# file /usr/bin.rom/top
/usr/bin.rom/top: data

Sharp ROMs / C860 Freezing Up When Using Feeds
« on: December 26, 2005, 12:48:09 pm »
After having installed Cacko 1.23 on an C860, I have tried using the "Add/Remove Software" utility. I experience some strangeness when doing that. I have trawled through the threads in this forum, and cannot find any other description of this problem. I try to describe the problem below. Please answer in this thread if you have seen something similar or if you have a solution. Thanks in advance.

1) I can open the "Add/Remove Software" utility without problems.
2) I can access the "Install packages" and the "Uninstall packages" buttons without problems.
3) When I use the "Install packages via networks" button, I get an overview showing nothing (I don´t know if it should).
4) I can use the button with a yellow icon, and see which servers are set. Default only the default Cacko feed was set.
5) If I use "Cancel" (either the Cancel button or the 'X' in the window) there is no problem returning to the previous overview. If I use "OK", the device freezes up. From that point I can only get in contact with the device by removing the battery and booting again. The freeze occurs whether or not I have changed anything before pressing "OK".
6) Any changes made before pressing "OK" stay (even though the freeze occurs). Any changes made before pressing "Cancel" do not stay.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Networking Problem With 3.5.3
« on: December 23, 2005, 01:03:33 pm »
I am trying out OZ/GPE for the first time. I have installed 3.5.3 on an C860. It seems that I cannot get outside my LAN after configurating the wlan0 interface. I can ping the LAN address of my router/gateway, but cannot access any addresses outside the router.

There was no /etc/resolv.conf file, when I looked under /etc. I have created that now, with the correct IP addresses of primary and secondary nameservers. That doesn't help.

Any ideas?

Software / Which is the newer version of Kino2?
« on: August 13, 2004, 10:03:32 am »
I have a saved copy of kino2_0.22_arm.ipk which I downloaded quite some time ago. Today I went to this site's download section to see if there is a newer version. The version there is kino2_0.3_arm.ipk.

Which of these is the newer version? I should think that 2_0.22 is newer than 2_0.3. I find it hard to believe, however, that I have a newer version than the one in ZUG's download section, since ZUG is hosting new Kino2 releases now, as I understand it.

One more thing: I am unable to find Kino2 through the categories in the download section. Only when I enter 'kino2' in the search textbox, do I get a link to a Kino2 .ipk package. Can anyone here find Kino2 through the categories?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ on SL-C860
« on: June 18, 2004, 09:39:01 am »
Will the OZ ROM work on a Zaurus SL-C860? When I go this page:
http://www.openzaurus.org/oz_website/content/download
I don\'t see a download for my model, the closest choice would be the C700. I know the architecture of the C700 is the same, but the processor is not *exactly* the same, so I would like to have an opinion from someone who knows this ROM.

One other thing, if the OZ people read along here: Why do I have to press three of four times on the arrow of the scroll boxes with options on the mentioned page, to make them fold out? I\'m using Mozilla 1.4.

General Discussion / Where do Thumbs.db files come from?
« on: April 19, 2004, 06:04:17 am »
I see some files named Thumbs.db and thumbs.db on my Zaurus SL-C860. I know that some MS Windows programs can leave files named like this, but I also see them in directories where I believe a MS Windows client viewing directories on the Zaurus, could hardly leave such files: in directories under the read-only file system.

Which programs on the Zaurus leave files named like this?

Sharp ROMs / Syncing with TCP/IP over USB stopped working
« on: April 09, 2004, 10:06:25 am »
I\'ve not been syncing for a long time now, since I find the syncing possibilities with my C860 unsatisfactory. A couple of days I couldn\'t avoid it any longer, and I connected the Zaurus with its USB cable. The syncing with TCP/IP over USB that I had had working when I got the Zaurus a couple of months ago, did not work any longer. The syncing process seems to go through the motions, dialog-wise, both on the Zaurus and on the PC, but when I look into MS Outlook on the PC I can clearly see that nothing has happened.

Could anyone here give a hint about what to look for? I use MS Outlook 2002 on MS Windows XP and IntelliSync 3.2E with the drivers from the Japanese CD that came with the C860. The C860 is with the stock ROM (with English menus).

This is what I tried so far:
1) Changing to USB I/O connection. Then I don\'t get the syncing dialogs at all, and an error occurs.
2) Checking in \"Sync Options\" on the PC that I had opted for syncing *all* items in *all* categories.
3) Backing up and removing my Outlook.pst file and restart MS Outlook with a clean file. Then I could synchronize the calendar if I chose *only* calendar synchronizing from \"Sync Options\" on the PC.
4) Choosing \"Clear Sync Info\" from the PC Link application on the Zaurus. No result.
5) Tried syncing with MS Outlook running and without MS Outlook running.

Software / Where to find fdisk?
« on: April 07, 2004, 04:05:08 pm »
The fdisk ipk that is being linked to from the Zaurus Software Index is gone.

Where can the fdisk ipk for Zauruses be found?

Security and Networking / Syncing problems with WinXP over WiFi
« on: April 05, 2004, 11:41:08 am »
I have been here before with this subject (not in this forum, though, as far as I remember). I never resolved the problem and I am still unable to find any posting in any forum mentioning a possible solution that I\'m able to use.

I need to sync between my C860 with stock ROM (with English menus) and MS Outlook 2002 on an MS Windows XP system. I have been able to sync through TCP/IP over USB using IntelliSync, but I want to sync through the Zaurus\' WiFi connection.  I am unable to get that working, though. That has been the situation for a couple of months now.

My LAN has network number 192.168.1.0/24 and the Zaurus has address 192.168.1.107. The WiFi connection works, and Samba on the Zaurus works. There are no problems at all seeing the Zaurus among other hosts in the Windows Workgroup.

When I try synchronizing, the process seems to start as it does when I synchronize through TCP/IP over USB, and the Zaurus shows the \"Communicating...\" screen. Then I get a dialog on the PC telling me that an error ocurred while trying to connect to the Zaurus.

What am I missing?

Best regards.

General Discussion / How to get PS1 to show anything useful?
« on: February 29, 2004, 08:55:25 am »
Has anyone here succeeded in getting PS1 to show anything useful on a terminal? It seems to me there is an issue with busybox not being very willing to work with PS1 the way one\'s used to from bash.
I have tried this in ~/.bashrc:
export PS1=\'u@h:w# \'
that just gives me *exactly* the string assigned to PS1. With this:
export PS1=\"$USER@$HOSTNAME:$PWD# \"
the shell variables are expanded as the PS1 variable is being set, and the prompt doesn\'t change even if I \'su\' or change into another directory. Using singlequotes for the latter string results in the variables not being expanded *at all*.

Security and Networking / nmap installation on C860 fails
« on: February 21, 2004, 09:01:05 am »
I\'m trying to get nmap working on my C860 with no luck so far, since I cannot even install!
I have these two files:

libpcre3_4.3-4_arm.ipk
nmap_3.50-1_arm.ipk

and I understand that I should install libpcre first, then nmap. When I try installing either, I get:
# ipkg -force-depends -d sd install ./libpcre3_4.3-4_arm.ipk
zcat: ./libpcre3_4.3-4_arm.ipk: not in gzip format
zcat: stdin: unexpected end of file
ipkg_install_file: ERROR unpacking control.tar.gz from ./libpcre3_4.3-4_arm.ipk

The issue with \"not in gzip format\" is contradicted when I run \'file\' on the file from a prompt on a desktop Linux system:
david@dt:~/Zaurus/ipk$ file libpcre3_4.3-4_arm.ipk
libpcre3_4.3-4_arm.ipk: Debian binary package (format 2.0), uses gzip compression

Has anyone seen this behaviour before?

Accessories / IR keyboard reviews related to use with the Zaurus?
« on: February 11, 2004, 06:07:00 am »
Does anyone here know of any IR keyboard reviews related to their use with a Zaurus? I have found one poster here referring to a review on devnet, but that article cannot be found anymore.

Cxx0 General discussions / Booting into non-GUI runlevel
« on: February 08, 2004, 11:46:49 am »
I tried installing a couple of packages yesterday, and I had to uninstall them again, since they didn\'t comply with the libs on my system. It seems the uninstallation took some system files already used on the system with it. I am completely unable to get the device to run now.

I would like to boot the system to something else than init 5 to be able to explicitly issue the command to start qpe and see if that gives me any error messages, since I suspect that it is the start of the GUI that fails.

I have tried taking out the battery for a couple of minutes, putting it in place again, switching the battery switch back on, turn the device on and press the \'/\' key while booting (SL-5x00 users seem to do so when they wish to boot to something than init 5). That doesn\'t work for me.

How does one boot a SL-860 system to anything else than init 5? I have searched the forums without finding anything but the advice given to SL-5x00 owners.

Denmark / Sync over LAN forbindelse
« on: February 06, 2004, 08:34:08 am »

Se bl.a. her:
