Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Convert Kapi Database To Gpe Equivalent?
« on: January 18, 2007, 02:50:12 pm »
Okay, so Ko/pi and Ka/pi aren't yet ported to GPE.  I'd love to use GPE, but these two and opie-reader keep me with opie.

I used to really like Ko/pi and Ka/pi because of their sync ability with the equivalents in Windows, and I still treasure that, but until I can try and compile them for GPE, but I'd still like access to my data.  I would love to try getting kopi and kapi running on GPE, but I can't afford to be without access to my data--so an important middle step would be getting the data in the GPE tools' format.

Anyone managed that yet?  Any good first steps?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / One More Time: External Usb Keymappings For Oz?
« on: January 18, 2007, 02:47:06 pm »
Sorry about this, but I've searched and seen several solutions, so I honestly just don't know what's the most current.

I'm trying to use a Fellowes Stowaway USB keyboard, but the mapping is wonky when I plug it in to OZ (, I think; don't have it with me) on a C1000.  How do I fix it again?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Konqueror In Oz/opie... And Trouble With Hotels
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:40:48 am »
Since my wife started school again and I can't abscond with her laptop during business trips, I decided to take my Z along with a foldable keyboard and a wireless CF card.

Of course, the foldable keyboard doesn't work (/pout--can't take it out of NumLock mode), so that was frustrating.  But my ensuing session with Konqueror and the hotel wireless was maddening.

It was one of those situations where you have to "accept their terms" by clicking a button that submitted a form.  Now, I had Javascript enabled and everything, but if I clicked that button, I got the same page EVERY TIME; it just kept asking me to click the button.

I can only assume something was a bit wonky with Konqueror.  Is there a fix, or an alternate browser that would handle that?  Maybe I should install links2/lynx or something just to try it...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus /, Opie, Usb Keyboard Problems
« on: August 30, 2006, 10:57:13 am »
I've got one of those snazzy USB foldy keyboards.  I bought it for my Z6k, and it never worked right, and now I'm trying it with my Z1k, and it's not working right either...

Short form: it comes up with NumLock on, so I can't use half the keyboard, and I can't turn NumLock off.  Half the keys seem to work pretty well (may be some symbol mapping problems) but of course it's completely unusable without the numlock numlocking.  I can plug the keyboard into a regular computer and it works beautifully.

Anything obvious I'm missing?  It seems as if it should work, but while I've tried searching the forums for solutions, all I found were other folks having the same problem (someone suggested "plug it in to a normal computer, switch the numlock, plug it back into the Zaurus"--but that doesn't work for me.)

Any help would be, well, helpful.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / But No Snes9x?
« on: August 20, 2006, 06:40:12 pm »
Juuust checking on this:

In the feeds (and on the Hentges release of OZ there is opie-sh-snes, but I can't find the actual snes9x emulator anywhere.

Any suggestions, or places I should start trying to compile something?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Arg! Where Is Sdl/fbdev For Z Documented!?
« on: January 27, 2006, 09:30:05 pm »
I'm pulling my hair out trying to work with SDL and FBDev with OZ 3.5.3 on an Akita.  I was using Hentges 3.5.3, which worked OK, but was a bit slow (9 fps fullscreen on Snes9x).  I then tried Cresho's package for the regular Z rom, which failed as it should have, but I didn't have the Hentges versions of libSDL and Snes9x, so I just reinstalled the OZ versions, which turned out to not be the best idea.

But I've played this game before, with my 6000...

For example: I try Snes9x, which appears to be trying to follow my wishes, but is rotated 90 degrees.  It tries to read a mystical file /tmp/qtembedded-root/QtEmbedded-0.spec, which doesn't exist, but should tell it rotation or QVga information.

"Aha," think I, "I shall create this file and put the directive "Rot=1" in it!

So I do that, and while it obediently says it's reading the file and that it's "Rot=1, Qvga=0", it then, one line down, says that it will use "Rot=0, Qvga=0"

Heck, I was just guessing, there.  I can't find references to a "QtEmbedded-0.spec" anywhere in my knowledge of SDL.  What does it do?  How do you set it up?  How do you convince SDL programs to honor its wishes?  How do you enable Qvga mode?

I then turn to mplayer for help.  I follow the thread on "video playback on the 6000", which I remember working on the 6000.  I create an /etc/fb.modes file with the right info.  I run mplayer with -vm -vo fbdev -fbmode qvga -vop rotate 1.  The movie appears--upside down and reversed left to right.  Changing "-vop rotate 1" to other numbers is useless.  And there is no sound.

I see plenty of howto guides, and many are good.  But few really address WHAT is going on.  Particularly in the case of the QtEmbedded-0.spec file and how it works, that is completely confused.

Please, any help would be appreciated.  I have worked with SDL in the past (Linux platform game that never quiiite made it out the door) so I am familiar with a lot of the basics here, but NOT how it applies to the Z.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Java On Oz?
« on: December 17, 2005, 09:48:20 pm »
OK, maybe I don't know how to do the search function correctly, but the only mentions I saw of a Java VM on OZ 3.5.3 was Kaffe, but "ipk install kaffe-gtk" (the only kaffe I saw) gives me unhappy "no X packages available" sorts of errors.

What's the state of Java on OZ?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Frotz And Color
« on: December 15, 2005, 12:04:11 pm »
I seem to remember Frotz running with color support when I used it on my 6000, but it's not doing so on my 1000 with 3.5.3.  I'm not sure what a reliable test is, but trying games which should support color and even trying to force color mode (-F) doesn't seem to work.  "term" is set to vt100, which should work, and ls is using color.

Am I missing something in running the program, or is something preventing color mode?  Any text adventure folks out there?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Henges 3.5.3 On C1000--that On-switch Blinky Thang
« on: September 26, 2005, 02:23:30 pm »
Loving the Hentges 3.5.3, but I remember seeing something in the post about the "on" switch being mapped to some test code.  Sure enough, if I am foolish enough to depress the "on" switch while OZ is booted up, I get the text console, blank screen, blinky cursor in the top left corner.

The thread mentioned that it was possible to ssh in and fix it, but that's not really an option if you're away from a network connection and a friendly terminal--the only solution I could find was a reboot, but being a fumblefinger type, I've had to do a LOT of rebooting in the last couple months.

Was this fixed in a later release, or is there something I can do to prevent it?

Thanks--sorry to complain when it's been so useful (well, I still can't get Snes9x to work and can't find a working NetHack, but one can't have everything--heh) but it'd be really nice not to have to reboot so often.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Snes9x/c1000... Options?
« on: August 13, 2005, 05:16:40 pm »
I'm doing my best to get Snes9x to play properly with OpenZaurus 3.5.3 on my C1000.  I get the distinct feeling that it works, and I just don't know the switches to use.  Experimenting, I've found the following:

"snes9x" gets me music and sound, but a blank screen.
"snes9x -xs 640 -ys 480" gets me a wee li'l picture in the top left quarter of my screen.  Some scan lines may be missing, but it's definitely good output.
"snes9x -x2 -xs 640 -ys 480" gets me bits all over the screen and looks very odd.

What am I missing?

OK, my whining never ceases...

OZ 3.5.3 (Hentges); I'm wrestling with wpa_supplicant.  I have the wpa_supplicant.conf file set up, and so I try the following, with these results:

Code: [Select]
root@akita:/# wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ioctl[PRISM2_IOCTL_PRISM2_PARAM]: Operation not supported
Failed to enable WPA in the driver
ioctl[PRISM2_IOCTL_PRISM2_PARAM]: Operation not supported
Failed to disable WPA in the driver

lsmod shows hostap and hostap_cs installed.  I had heard that hostap provided client-side WPA, so thought this would be possible with my Buffalo WLI2-CF-S11, but perhaps I'm missing something horribly obvious.

Any suggestions?

OK, I bought a shiny new C1000 (happy day!) and flashed with the latest Hentges-style.

My Buffalo WLI2-CF-S11 networking card, which worked flawlessly with the standard Sharp rom, is unrecognized (sad day!) under OZ.

Now, being no stranger to the search command, I found that under PdaXrom, I would add the following to /etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf:

Code: [Select]
card "Buffalo WLI2-CF-S11"
  manfid 0x026f, 0x030b
  bind "orinoco_cs"

I did so.  I put in my card...

Code: [Select]
root@akita:/# cardctl ident
Socket 0:
  product info: "BUFFALO", "WLI2-CF-S11", "", ""
  manfid: 0x026f, 0x030b
  function: 6 (network)
Socket 1:
  no product info available

root@akita:/# cardctl status
Socket 0:
  3.5v 16-bit PC Card
  function 0: [ready]
Socket 1:
  no card

Frabjous day!  But... even after restarting pcmcia, unplugging, replugging, etc... no modules get automatically loaded.  And if I manually "modprobe orinoco_cs", forcing orinoco and hermes to load, they don't seem to see anything.  Ifconfig and iwconfig both stoutly deny the existance of any network devices; ifup wlan0 is even more offended.

I am pouting.  Any help available, even for diagnosing?  I don't know much about pcmcia wizardry to easily diagnose this.

Also... any reason the display keeps getting corrupted under Konsole?  It's really, really annoying; I see dead characters, walking around like regular characters, not knowing they're dead, and it makes it right difficult to read.

For Sale / Wanted / Sl-6000l For Sale!

To eBay with it!

Great shape; let me know if you have any questions.

For Sale / Wanted / Trade My 6k For Your 1k/3k/3100?
« on: July 07, 2005, 07:59:23 pm »
Well, under a year ago I bought this loverly sl-6000, and love it to pieces; it's in great shape, minor abrasions on the plastic flip-up cover but with a screen protector on it since day 1, still have the original packaging although it's been flashed to OZ 3.5.2.

Aaaanyway, started up a new job in a place that's so security-sensitive they won't allow anything with built-in 802.11, bluetooth, etc (you even have to remove batteries if you enter some areas with an IR-capable device, no USB drives allowed, no chance to install useful software on your computer without explicit approval, etc etc.  I couldn't even install my old PS/2 ergonomic keyboard on my desktop).

So the 6k has got to go; I'm not going to keep around a PDA that's useless for 95 percent of the time I'm away from my desktop.  Cool factor is one thing, but...

Anyway, before I put this fella up on eBay and repurpose the funds, I thought I would go for a long shot and see if anyone bought a C1000 (or a 3000 or 3100 while I'm dreaming) and is thinking "You know, this is nice, but I'd really rather have something with built-in 802.11b so I didn't have to muck about with this CF card".

("Why yes!", C3k users will say, "This built-in hard drive is highly overrated!  I sure would rather have PDAZilla with built-in wireless and a cradle big enough to use in a bar brawl!")

But seriously, if anyone's in that situation, let me know.  I checked with the security folks at work, and at least the C1K is "legal" since the only thing it has is IRDA.  I figure such a deal is unlikely, but I figured I'd at least offer--I can always go the eBay route.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Kopi--gpe, Or Only Opie?
« on: May 24, 2005, 02:11:02 pm »
OK, I've tried searching, and it's probably very obvious, but I'm missing it...

My understanding is that the GPE image provides an X server for the device.  This, to me, means that one ought to be able to run QT-compatible apps on GPE.

But I did notice that kopi shows up only in the Opie feed, not GPE.  And, well--that's about the only productive thing that I *do* with my Z.  So I've sorta got to have kopi.

I think I'd like to try GPE.  But I'm not willing to give up Kopi.

So... can Kopi (or other opie-style apps) run under GPE?  Is there a compatible set of libraries for it?  Which feeds work with both GPE and Opie?  I'm sure there must be several, since there isn't a whole lot in the GPE feed...

Thanks; apologies for my confusion--I really did try to figure it out by myself.
