Zaurus - pdaXrom / Some Remarks About The Power Of Pdaxrom
« on: March 12, 2007, 01:24:49 pm »

First of all. I tried a lot of distributions on my C860. At the moment I use kathrin 1.1.0beta1, because the hardware works almost out of the box. I had problems with power management on newer releases and I should track down this some day. Anyway. pdaXrom is a real productivity booster.

I read about a new bootloader concept in newer versions some time ago that allows to boot different versions (like grub on my pc). This is a prerequisite for developers that use their Z every day and dont want to brick it

Is this usable on the C860? If so, I would like to start writing some scripts that fixes the most annoying typos in pdaXrom, fixes symlinks and replaces some of the busybox tools with real applications. There is enough space on 1 GB external card (sd or cf)
And you can get one for less than 30 bucks in each store

Because shell scripts look somehow strange for me, a ruby or python script could do the job.
We could provide scripts that specialize pdaXrom.

An example: I dont need much of the Window-Manager stuff. Even twm is okay for me. But I want to see emacs preinstalled, configured and running with useful shortcuts
So it fits my needs. Though I can do this per hand, I dont want to invent the wheel several times

Other people want to use pdaXrom for only playing chess or other games.
The next only hears music

And another one needs big size mail clients and web browsers

Lets have a real simple base system and write some scripts that do the rest
I think this is more important for the end user than getting new kernel features running

Any suggestions?

PS: English is not my native language. Could be hard to understand

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Sl-c860 Beta1 2 Gb Sd Card Driver Backport
« on: October 16, 2006, 03:24:28 am »

I think the beta1 is the most stable and most usable version for older zaurus models like
c750/c860. I dont want to upgrade to another one. But I heard of a working sd card driver for 2 gb cards. It works for more recent zaurus models but there is no backport to my model. Is anybody working on that?? Would be cool to have this in beta1 for c860

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Need Help With Japanese Localization
« on: September 25, 2006, 01:57:33 pm »

I dont know how to set up japanese environment in pdaxrom. Because the X11 stuff work with only minor bugs I used that before. But these minor bugs are annoying. Characters sometimes disappear as I type. Now I want to use japanese on linux console. What is the best font for such an setup? How can I use it? Are there some people from japan around reading this?

Many thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Perl 5.8.*
« on: May 09, 2005, 02:06:35 am »

I know that there is a pre-compiled binary in the feeds, but I am interested in compiling perl
native on the Zaurus. This is because I have to change the default directories, remove some
extensions dont need large file support etc.

But perl resist. First there was a undefined reference to libm. I fixed this with using nm instead of
test program. Then there were optimization (gcc) problems. -O2 behaves badly.

Now it stops at ext/errno. No error definitions in errno_pm.PL -> make error

Any help is appreciate

How can I get the keycodes for the zaurus.
Are there differences between the cl types? (860 etc)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Emacs Runs Fine. Pdaxrom Now Rocks
« on: March 23, 2005, 11:12:34 am »

After playing around to compile some smaller programs native on rc9,
I today got emacs running. It compiles right, after linking /usr/lib/crt c-runtime stuff
from the zgcc image. This is very dirty and may cause problems, but so far it works.
On console it works perfectly. On X you can do emacs --font 7x14 -g 80x26
if you have problems with font or size.

The next good news is that if emacs runs, probably vm runs, too.
VM is the mail-client of my dreams, so I mentioned it here.
google for "wonderworks vm"
Here it compiles right. After installing it should work

That shows the power of pdaxrom. Next week i will donate to this project (guys).

But ... here is my suggestion. What about a list of programs that compile right on pdaxrom.
That would be a good start for a <pdaxrom from scratch> project.

Unfortunally the arm part of looks not maintained anymore.
Lets do some compensation

I am eager to hear from you about this topic

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Squeak On Pdaxrom
« on: March 19, 2005, 09:51:08 am »

A few days ago a explored Squeak, an open source smalltalk machine with a lots of extensions.
Very promising. I compiled this on my desktop and it runs fine. So I had the idea to run this on
my CL-860. I looked at google and found a project about Squeak and QT? But there was no
X-Windows version. Hey. pdaXrom has a X-Server. Why not compile the main source from
Wow. I saw no errors during compile time. But if I start squeak it complains that there are no shared
libraries. Hmm ... that was true. They werent built. The static ones exist. Seems to be a linking issue.
Maybe libtool doesnt work as expected.

Probably it is easy to fix. But I am not so familiar with zgcc to fix things like that.

If someone could help, It were great. Hints are also welcome
