5x00 General discussions / 5500 Error - Will No Longer Calibrate?
« on: October 19, 2006, 01:08:03 pm »
heya,

I just dug my Z-5500 out of storage after a long hiatus, and flashed it with Qtopia 2.1.2.

Upon starting up, I tapped the screen once to start the setup, then went through the calibration procedure. However, no matter how many times I performed calibration, it simply repeated all over again.

Thinking it was a problem with the ROM, I flashed it again with OZ 3.5.4 as well, with the same result (calibration kept on looping).

This is a very strange error, but hopefully the machine is usable somehow - any suggestions?

Thanks,
Victor

General Discussion / "couldnt Connect To Socket!"
« on: April 16, 2005, 11:22:25 pm »
Hi,

I'm trying to get opie remote to work on my recently flashed zaurus, and on startup, and every time you click a remote button, it comes up with:
Quote
"couldnt connect to socket!"
I'm using OZ 3.5.3 (Opie), and I've installed the following packages on top of the vanilla opie rom:

lirc 0.7
lirc-modules 0.7
opie-help-en 1.2.0
opie-help-en-locale 1.2.0
opie-remote 1.2.0
opie-remote-help-en 1.2.0

Also, once I've managed to get opie-remote to work, how exactly do I go about using it? (sorry, I'm new to all this ) I need a lirc.conf for my remote, right? (I know www.lirc.org has some - other sources?).

Also, what if I want to control multiple devices (eg dvd/vcr/tv etc.) - can I merge the different lirc.conf's together? Finally, how do I go about creating a lirc.conf for my own devices - is there a learning mode in lirc/opie-remote?

Thanks,
Victor

PS: Somebody mentioned a similar  issue on handheld.org ML here, but there doesn't seem to have been a reply.

General Discussion / Use Ps/2 Keyboard On Zaurus 5500
« on: April 05, 2005, 07:40:43 am »
Hi,

Does anybody know if it's possible to make some kind of adapter to let you use a normal full-size PS/2 keyboard via the serila port on the bottom of the Zaurus 5500?

If anybody could provide info on making one, that'd be great? Or even better, make one and I'll buy it off you .

thanks,
Victor

PS: Is serial port the proper name for that port on the bottom? Mine just says Sharp I/O Port.

General Discussion / Using Zaurus 5500 As A Universal Remote Control
« on: March 21, 2005, 05:05:28 am »
Hi,

I'm wondering if it's possible to use my Zaurus 5500 as a universal remote control, ie to control televisions, dvd-players, or anything else with an IR interface?

I've taken a look at Opie Remote, and was wondering if anybody had any experience with this program. How effective is it, and do you have any hints/tips/erratta/notes?

Also, is the range of the Zaurus too short to be useful? Exactly how much range have you guys managed to get out of it? If the range is too short to be useful, are there any cheap solutions to inreasing it? (eg IR repeaters/extenders - price?)

Alternatively, do you think I would be better off going for some programmable IR remote with a touch screen, and which can be connected to my computer - anybody know of any such products/suggestions?

thanks,
Victor

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom For 5500?
« on: March 08, 2005, 11:13:38 pm »
Hi,

I was just wondering if anybody had any word on progress on pdaXrom for the Zaurus 5500? Is there any chance of a RC/beta release, or something similar?

thanks,
Victor

General Discussion / Eyecandy From Rasterman...
« on: February 24, 2005, 06:25:03 pm »
Hi,

By now, I'm guessing most people here have read the whole /. and osnews angle on Raster's blog post - I'll start off by saying I've been a fan of his work since RH 5-ish. Anyway, what do you guys think of this?

EEM Video
Live on iPaq

I'm hoping the above won't go down - it's already survived a couple days of slashdotting  , but I've got local copies and will mirror if needed.  Anyway, hopefully he'll be nice and release something that we can try out easily...

Victor

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Building A Custom Oz Rom?
« on: February 22, 2005, 01:20:19 am »
Hi,

Could anybody point me out to documents on how to build my own OpenZaurus rom? I'm interested in creating a gpe image with GPE 2.6, Matchbox 0.9.3 etc. I've searched high and low, and can't seem to find any sources on this (except for the OpenEmbedded Wiki, which talks only about compiling applications, not ROMs).

Anyway, congrats to the OE team for some really nice work. My only niggle (and no insult meant to them) is that the documentation seems a little sparse. I've seen the post on the documentation project, and I'm hoping once I get this ROM built, I could write something up (although as you can see, my knowledge of Zaurii is somewhat limited).

Thanks,
Victor

Hi,

I've just bought a new Zaurus 5500 off eBay , and now need to get a WiFi card for it. I would like to canvas opinions on various cards - which are well-supported (Sharp ROM vs. OpenZaurus), are good for wardriving, have decent battery life, are reliable, have good pickup, an external jack etc.

Opinions/good places to buy tje following?

Linksys WCF12
GLinksys WCF54G
D-Link 650W
D-Link 660W
Socket/Symbol Spectrum24 (Why so expensive? )
Sandisk Connect
Cisco/Proxim Harmony/Lucent Orinoco??

Also, some people suggested using a PCMIA card, eg the Lucent Gold or Orinoco (same?) with a PCMIA/CF adaptor. Is this an effective setup (sorry, I know it's a very broad question) ? Apparently the battery life will decrease dramatically - what are the experiences with thi? How good is the driver support? Is the performance superior to just a CF card?

In terms of external jacks, are there any good cards with one? I can't seem to find a single cf wifi card with it at all...

There's a vague reference here, but I can't find any further information on the Artem, nor does anybody seem to sell them. In a press release (source[/url), Symbol said that there was a external antenna version of the 24:
Quote
About Spectrum24 High Rate Compact Flash
...
The Spectrum24 High Rate CF card comes in two form factors: with an integrated antenna for Type I CF extend slots in PDAs and an external antenna connecter for embedded device designs.

But I can't seem to see this anywhere else - thoughts?

Also, there don't seem to be a lot of 802.11g cards - the linksys G isn't out yet - any others that are supported on the Zaurus? Incidentally, are they actually worth it (eg do a lot of APs support only g and not b?)

Man, I'd hate to buy a card, and find out that 802.11i suddenly comes out... ...

Thanks,
Victor

PS: Out of curiosity, I bought the 5500 for AU$300 (about US$234) - is that a ridiculously high amount?
