Angstrom & OpenZaurus / New OZ and smbclient
« on: September 26, 2004, 04:20:21 pm »
While trying to do one from the feed the ipkg is not found. I however extracted it using ar. Now is there an easy way to handle this or am I stuck extracting the data.tar.gz's into /mnt/ram and linking it all by hand?

I was just wondering if there is just the client end tools of the samba package somewhere. I checked the new OZ feed and noticed libsmbclient and the samba package. Yes I am being lazy I could have searched more and I could always play around and just get the tools to have space but I figured I would see if any of you nice folks knew offhand

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / where to load libstdc++6_3.4.2 ??
« on: September 25, 2004, 03:11:14 am »
If you think a lot of applications you are going to run will depend on it and you have the room put it in root. If not you can go ahead and load it into ram. I have not loaded a lib onto a card becuase I tend to swap the couple of cards I have and would rather keep the unit storing libs and things. I am not sure if ipkg-link will take care of setting things up for libs or not. I would assume so. You might as well try and let us know.

If that makes you uncomfortable you can always wait untill someone who knows more on the issue posts

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Kismet woes
« on: September 25, 2004, 03:05:10 am »
Ok I got this to work on mine. I am running the same ROM as you however I am on a 5500. However some of this should help.

First make sure you have ncurses and the ncurses terminfo ipks from the feed installed.

Once you have that done you should be able to either put an entry in /etc/profile or add an enviroment variable from the prompt for TERMINFO=/mnt/ram/usr/share/terminfo (or wherever you installed your terminfo)
if you put it in your profile just put an export before it.

Go through and set up your two kismet conf files now.

If you added the TERMINFO into your profile go ahead and source it by . /etc/profile

if you put it in the terminal as an env variable just close the terminal and reopen to make sure it takes it

After that just run kismet and you will hopefully be good to go, if you still have problems just let us know

Now there might be better ways or some of the things I said might not be needed if so feel free to let me know

EDIT: If you want color with kismet make sure to use linux as your terminal instead of vt100

6000 - Tosa / community and the 6000
« on: March 22, 2004, 07:17:53 pm »
Just a few questions for you guys. I was wondering how you all would feel if these situations came up.

If Sharp tries to start a Dev community for the 6000 will any of you join up?

If they try to start having a community for their 6000 do you think that they would bring back things for the 5x00? If they do would you try to join up with that as well?

I dont know if they will try to start something like that for the 6000. I dont think I would trust it if they did. I dont think they will bring back things 5x00 either and if I did it would probably be because they gave one @#$ed good excuse for it all.

I have just installed openzaurus 3.3.5

Just thought I would also point out that this version of OZ is in testing phase it is there for a reason so one shouldnt expect it to run like a production version its there because its most likely not compeltely stable and has some issues...

Cant say I\'ve had this problem. I can test this out for you and see if I run into the same problem however I have a sl-5500. Just tell me where you downloaded the application and can you post your ipk conf file. Does it do this for any other apps or just this one.

No, I do not want to develop it. I will go develop on the pdaXrom team, at least I can install apps on their latest release. OZ/opie appear to be out to lunch.

I think thats a little uncalled for and sounds more like a troll.
I\'ve not ran into this problem yet on any of the ipk\'s I\'ve installed. If theres a problem it would do better to try to work through it and discuss things wiht people who can help not flame. The OZ team has had little support from others and is doing good for the amount of people they have if theres problems with it working to help solve problems and discussion of these is a better route. If  everyone took the attitude you seem to be presenting in this post I\'m sure we wouldnt have a lot of applications or much of a linux community...

General Discussion / Fragmented flash on Sharp ROM 3.10?
« on: March 20, 2004, 03:27:01 pm »
Hmm could be wrong here but is it possible that the Sharp ROM rewrites config scripts or something like that to the flash area?

Flash would need a filesystem to handle working with files. This filesystem can become fragmented over time if data changes on it. Sounds like the Sharp ROM could be checking for this every so often and is trying to be helpful.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defragmentation

Once again could be wrong here so take all this with a grain of salt...

Qt/Qtopia / A few for any developers
« on: March 20, 2004, 03:03:43 pm »
I\'ve not dealt with Sharp on anything other than my zaurus. I think it was a wonderful idea on what they were trying to achive and I guess it just really annoyed me that they would just abandon everyone like that. It seems like some of the embedded stuff also wants to keep their source/spec\'s closed and this seems to make it harder for linux handhelds. I know little about this and I could be wrong just from what I\'ve noticed...

The hardware for my zaurus is quite happy and at least they gave the community a start which makes/made it easier to have what we have here. They got us all started and now the community can pick up and move on which is nice.
This kind of reminds me of some video games where the users are allowed to create their own mod\'s and the like. This makes the game last much longer and allows people to shape it towards what they want/expect. All the company has to do is make the game start people doing this and they pretty well pick up the pieces and take care of it from there on.
