5x00 General discussions / Sl-5500 Cacko Rom / Kernel Gone

I just received some used Zauri, one of which being an sl-5500. I have flashed them to Cacko before, but it appears that http://www.schwag.org/~crow/cacko/ is now down. I've looked all over and can't find the files anywhere. ZUG downloads are broken, the actual cacko site doesn't have the sl-5500 version, so it looks like the 5500 + cacko has suffered bit-rot. Anybody have a copy of the files?
Is this what you want?

Sorry to drag up an old thread but does anyone have a copy of the 5000d version?

Software / Optimizer (for Zaurus) No Longer Retail
« on: May 29, 2008, 07:09:57 pm »
Hi.

I'm the author of Optimizer a small Zaurus filesystem utility that was once a retail product.

I've decided to make the last version that was released, 1.0.6, freely available. It should work with the standard Sharp ROM and Jeode or Sun's CVM, and was tested on SL5x00 and C series Zaurus, although it is highly compatible, I even had it on Jeode on PocketPC at one point, but you may need to play around/tweak it to get it to work now.

Read my blog post for more pointless details/disclaimers, link is at the bottom of it:

Have fun!

The TreeExplorer text appears as boxes so I can't figure out what the menu items are. I guess this is to do with a missing font -does anybody know?

it should be.

Kino2 looks promising - is Tree explorer available for SL5500?

Quote
kino2 and tree explorer are good

If you've got a 5500 and want sharp rom, I believe tkcrom has a flat theme that I think is very clean looking (compared to the other themes).  I'm not sure if the cacko rom has it.

I'm got a standard SL 5500 that I've not used in a while. I'm looking to do a minimalist install on the stock Sharp 3.13 ROM.

Primarily I need

A good minimalist theme (unlike Sharp's eyeball burning attempts)
A swap file manager
A media player (I've already purchased TKCVideo a while ago, and I use the Sharp player plugin for oggs)
VNC

Are there any other recommendation, e.g. a good file manager?

My aim is to have as much free internal memory as possible, while being completely functional as a mobile media player, an encyclopaedia, occasionally run Java programs.

Thanks,

Benjamin

Sharp ROMs / Sound From Sl5500's Internal Speaker
« on: February 09, 2005, 04:13:30 pm »
I give up - too much like hard work this. I've no development environment, no idea how drivers in linux work save knowing that they are modules and/or can be compiled into the kernel and I'm not even sure I can replace the kernel  (let alone which file in the directory you provided (thanks btw) is the actual replacement kernel).
I naively thought the kernel expanded into an internal ram location on hard reset, and that I could replace this with one from the mentioned directory.

Thanks for the help anyhow

I'm off to try this now however I expected to see the Z kernel in /boot and found nothing. A quick locate found nothing of interest except modules and libs directories. As I'm still a linux amateur where would I find the kernel - I'm still googling as we speak....?

Hi,

some time ago I compiled a kernel with the buzzer-patch and modules. They worked with OZ 3.3.6 but I don't know if the work with the Sharp-Rom. But you can try

The url is:

Good luck.

Sharp ROMs / Sound From Sl5500's Internal Speaker

Can anyone help with this?
Is this just a case of finding a module and adding it or replacing the Sharp 2.4.18 kernel with the OZ 2.4.18 kernel?
If it can't be done is it possible to still use the internal speaker driver in OZ 3.5 by manually by linking /dev/dsp to /dev/dsp1 (as was done in the past)?

I'm looking to use it with Sharp ROM 3.13 where can I get hold of the kernal binary with it compiled into and how would I install/use it? (I'm more interested in tinny mp3 playback than keyclicks etc).

Thanks.

driver was ported to 2.4.18 but it's usage kill all alarms, keyclicks etc sounds so we dont use it in OZ 3.5.x

I want to be able to play music (from any player doesn't matter what) from my SL5500's speaker. I know that if I install OZ I can do this (as I've tried it in the past) but I'd like to keep the Sharp ROM  - has the driver been back ported and if so how would I use it?
Utilities like buzconfig can play audio through the SL5500's cruddy piezo (sp?) speaker  on the Sharp ROM so it shouldn't be that difficult....?

Sharp ROMs / Usb I/o Disconnects

I think it was mentioned at one point that you should remove external power to the cradle whilst its connected (except I have power save mode on my Z kicking in constantly...). I also found lowering the clock speed down one setting (on my 5500) using qoverclock also seemed to help (but didn't remove the problem).

General Discussion / Z Is Dead, Wrong Polarity Ii
« on: February 03, 2005, 06:15:35 pm »
I did exactly the same with my SL5000D 2 years ago, its been sitting around as spares for my trusty SL5500. Its cheaper this way, pay $100-$200 to fix it or get insurance for your next Zaurus...

While I respect your right to sell your Z software, the whole point of buying an open-source based device kinda goes up in smoke if everyone releases what they do under proprietary licenses
I am actually a Linux evangelist. I could give away software and ask people to make a donation, if some 50% of the people did that I'd be happy. Uptake from reading other peoples views is that it is more commonly <2%. When people start donating money like  they expect developers to give all of their source for free I'll switch. Realistically I need to make money (I'm just a lowly developer), and my end goal is to have a company in 10 years time and that will come with a cost. I use open source, and I give back (usually patches) and my next (a Black and White style - not like mozilla's)  mouse gestures program for Windows) will be GPL.
As for my two existing projects, one is going to be open source and one closed, and both for Zaurus, ironically one is partly C# based...

General Discussion / What to Do With 2.5in Hard Drives?
« on: July 06, 2004, 02:43:41 pm »
Quote
My Rio Riot 20GB MP3 player died a few weeks ago (fried the system board when I hooked it up to my home-made car adaptor). It's got a 20GB 2.5in laptop drive, just begging to be used for a project, along with a battery that seems good enough to power it for a few hours.

My question is, is there any way to attach this to the Zaurus. I know that Compact Flash is just an extension of the ATA IDE interface, so theoretically it should be possible to attach the drive to the Z. The problem is, I cannot find anyone who manufactures an IDE-to-CF adaptor, although CF-to-IDE are quite abundant (remember the iOpener; it ran off of a CF card acting as a HD). The drive can easily be powered from battery I have, so power consumption should not be too much of an issue.

The only major obstacles I see is the phyical interface and any potential memory limit on the OS side (i.e., is > 4GB ok?). Any ideas or suggestions?
Why not go cf -> pcmcia -> IDE?

Here's half the journey:

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=105200

I read somewhere about someone who'd done this and had not success due to the fact you may need some external power for the hard disk tho ( I believe the zaurus can output 3.3v but the drive requires 5v

Personally I just went out and bought the largest CF card I could get at the time (2 years ago was 512MB)
