Software / Tkcvideo On Sl-5500

Can anyone explain why tkcVideo won't play this video podcast correctly?

Most likely because the video(s) in question have an AAC audio track. AFAIK tkcVideo does not support AAC audio.  

Can anyone suggest how I can solve this problem?

Either reencode the file on the desktop or use a recent video player. A quick check using vlc on Collie shows the file playing back fairly well (i.e. with some minor choppiness, most likely due to the fact that the clip is encoded with a fairly high constant bitrate, for a reason unbeknownst to me  ).

Yes. Feeding 3gp to the forum search function easily finds the details, as this has been talked about several times before.

Just as a hint -- feeding "3gp" to the forum search might have taken you to [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12031]this thread[/url], this thread or possibly even this thread in no time.

I just captured a video on my sony ericcson mobile phone [...] and was able to play it with mplayer.

That's good to hear. Out of curiousity: does that include AMR audio as well?

Just out of curiousity: which battery was the one you used supposed to be compatible with?

I did more or less the same, but with an EN-EL5 (IIRC Nikon)-compatible 1100 mAh battery quite some time ago now. Still works like a charm.

Actually it is a standard. And ITU-T V.23 was not just used in the UK, but also in other european countries.

That's one way of putting it. It is most likely that those movies exceed the parameter constraints necessary for playback on an embedded system. Attempting to play those movies manually with vlc, possibly with increased verbosity, might give an insight into that.

Incidentally, this vlc build is not really intended for the newer PXA-based machines, since it's not optimized for them. So it will not live up to its full potential. You really should look into mplayer/Kino instead if you want to get the most out of your PXA.

So no, this is not going to change.

Well, what I can do right now is attach the raw vlc binary, so you can make up your own mind if it's worth pursuing or not. It should work just fine as a drop-in replacement for the previous builds as long as you're not using the qte video_output module.

But you know the routine: if it eats your Zaurus, it's not my fault.

It's more than likely that this won't change, though. As I wrote earlier, IMHO there are virtually no differences when it comes to simple Zaurus playback. Ever had a closer look at those MP4s? Most likely they're using proprietary codecs or are way beyond the parameter constraints necessary for playback on an embedded system.

As for making things available, I'll see what I can do. Packaging and package testing easily takes a total of half a day. Once I find that time, I'll do what it seems I must

why don't you just stream the radio directly using kino2 instead of re streaming it through the PC?

Probably because the Beeb uses RealAudio COOK (i.e. RA8) via RTSP for streaming, and AFAIK there currently is no support for it in any Zaurus software.

Still, binary compatibility is not always easily achieved, even between linuxes running on the same processor family. So allow me to be amazed

Did you mention where the Code of your vlcplay lies? I get a SIGPIPE when trying to play a video.

Actually it's not published. 'vlcplay' was just a Quick'N'Dirty hack to allow for minimal Qtopia integration -- I'm not a GUI programmer. Thus the ugly piece of code still sits on my disk.  And it probably should remain there, never to see the light of day ... Muahahahaha! (Mad scientist laugh  ) Mainly because it is a terrible hack, and I don't really want my name associated with something like that  

The SIGPIPE ... hmm, most likely it can't find the vlc binary. IIRC the last release still had it hardcoded to /usr/bin/vlc. You may wanna try to symlink it there.

AFAIK the VLC Media Player is in OE. But you should probably ask the OE folks for details.

I just tried it with Familiar 0.7.2 on iPAQ 3850 and Speed is really good[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=135889\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Let me get this straight: you ran the binary I built on that iPAQ? If so, I'm seriously impressed w/regard to compatibility of the platforms

Just out of curiousity, I was wondering if you were planning another binary release, as it's been a new year?

I'm not really planning on it, since there's not much in the way of features/bugfixes I can see w/regard to the Zaurus, so the old version still does its job quite well.

Even though I'm somewhat short of time I did build a binary of 0.8.5 for comparison purposes, albeit without qt/e video output (i.e. framebuffer only, since that is the only thing I've been using anyway). But I wasn't intending to put it up for the aforementioned reasons.

Besides, the current user base is most likely around 2.473 and further dwindling  So unless someone does a really good job of convincing me it's worth putting in the extra effort, I doubt I'll do it.

Granted, product cycles for an entirely new platform are at least 2 years (or at least they should be   ).

There are more linux phones on the way (that run Qtopia BTW), I cannot comment on what and when.

While it's over a year old and was originally in a different context, [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8142&st=0&p=70757&#entry70757]a posting I wrote[/url] lays down the basic observations I have made w/regard to A/V-encoding and playback in the many days I have tinkered with it. It should still hold true today, and while I haven't done any specific benchmarking for quite some time now, there is nothing that indicates otherwise.

Maybe this can give you some idea of what to expect.
