Cosmo Communicator - Android / Missing firmware updates
« on: January 29, 2020, 01:29:23 pm »
Quote from: zorael
I just received my Cosmo and thought I'd update it the first thing I do. The "Latest Cosmo Firmware" page lists one released 11th December, and the recent campaign update mentions a "V19" that should have been released a few days ago.

However, the phone can't find any, and is as such stuck at "10292019-V15.<20191029_1401>". Region is Sweden.

Are they available to download manually and force update?

January 29 update notice from Planet:

Dear Cosmo backers!

Here are the latest news from the Cosmo team...

Over-the-air Android firmware Update

We are aware that some of you have issues upgrading the Android firmware of their Cosmo Communicator. This is most likely due to a misconfiguration of the software update server, which will be dealt with top priority early next week when people will come back to work from their Chinese New Year holidays. Unfortunately, until then this issue is completely outside our control.

As mentioned in the previous update, we are also working on a new system to replace the current software update mechanism with an in-house solution, which will give us more flexibility.

A first software update prototype has already been built and in the next few weeks we will shape it into a full-feature product. When ready, the new update mechanism will be released as a normal FOTA update, so the update will be transparent to users.

In the meantime, please do not attempt to update the firmware using any other method as the update files may not be compatible with your Cosmo OS version and may cause your Cosmo not to boot or function properly.

Similarly, please do not attempt to use Gemini Linux or other OS images on your Cosmo.

Might be a calibration issue with the battery - I had this issue with the Gemini.

Try this

Thanks very much for this...seems the simplest fix.  I'll give it a try.

US Device, AT&T provider,

I am loving the look of the Cosmo, and the increased speed of the device over the Gemini, but my Cosmo battery gets very warm during charging with the included AC adapter, and several times now it only charges to 83%.

Anyone else noting a similar problem?

I've been riding the cosmo VERY hard, and have yet to experience a warm  device.  I'm sitting at around 6 near full charge cycles now, and haven't seen the full charge at under 100%.  I will admit though that the full charges have been overnight, so I can't say 100% that the light didn't turn green prematurely, just that it ultimately does charge to 100% every time.  As for the heat, I've never felt the cosmo get warm in my pocket, or during use, at least not yet.  This includes charging while gaming (testing NWN at low battery is not recommended   ).  If you've checked your battery stats and don't see an obvious culprit, i would consider a full wipe / reset to see if the problem persists without setting up or installing anything.  While i know this is really inconvenient, a positive hit on your issue in this state would be a dead giveaway of a probable hardware issue.  Whats the build date on your firmware?  If its 10-29, and the test is positive, i would report it to planet asap.  They're clearly very busy with fulfillment, but the sooner you're able to report some useful/reliable data, the sooner you could get a replacement (hopefully rather than a repair).

Thanks very much for your advice!

I'm number 329, in the United States (New York, about 30 miles north of New York City).  My Cosmo (AT&T) is supposed to arrive on November 8 (tomorrow) via UPS

Just received my Cosmo - looking forward to the adventure.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / In search of a rugged case

As food for thought, you could consider this case I had custom made for my Gemini by a chinese ebay seller.
Just as a reference, I have received a similar, custom made leather case, as a Christmas gift from my beloved wife. It was tailor-made by our local shoemaker; I'm keeping the Planet's leather pouch inside it, as it fits it perfectly and makes it much easier to slide the Gemini out and in the case:

Now I don't have to worry anymore about the Gemini falling on the floor (not that I'm willing to test how much it protects it though!).

I have been very happy with this case I bought from a Chinese eBay seller.  It has belt loops and fits well and is easy to keep the Gemini at my side for a "quick-draw" event when I need to make notes emergently.  My favorite use was when I visited a medical clinic in Shanghai China and we were not allowed to use laptops, but I was able to pull out my Gemini and take excellent notes during the trip.  No one seemed to mind, and several people asked to see the Gemini and two of the doctors in the clinic told me they would be ordering one from Planet Computers.  The case also protects my Gemini when I carry it in a bag.  It cost $99 USD and has been worth it.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Gemini for Gemini!

Just backed this on Kickstarter. Great external screen for Gemini PDA that is also called Gemini (no relation):

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/921065...confirmation_v2

Since Gemini in the Zodiac is a symbol for a pair of twins, this must be a sign!  TWO Geminis together.  If this screen works with the Gemini PDA (and Cosmo Communicator) it will be great! I couldn't resist and so I just backed it.

This or that seem a better fit for Gemini given its limitations, are more affordable and readily available. The sad part - any of the hubs sharing this design blocks the headphone jack.

But the hyperdrive USB-C port has a 3.5mm jack - so wouldn't you be able to use that if it covers the one on the Gemini?

The grip part, and HDMI probably wont work (and the "grip" part may make it useless on Gemini as well...!). And the way charging is implemented on the Gemini will probably prevent that as well. But it is compact, and should work otherwise...

Please note that the grip part is completely detachable.  This should allow it to fit the Gemini very nicely.

Dear Gemini users,

In searching through USB-C hubs, I noticed this elegant little thing just coming up on Kickstarter today.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hypers...;token=d92dc661

As I am a Luddite concerning these things I wonder if any of you would have a comment.  You can pick up an Early Bird one at half off for $49 USD.

At last! Now there is only a "Special" Offering with 25% off on the Indiegogo website, with delivery June 2019.

So all of you who were afraid of the first run flaws can order now.

My hope is that Planet learned enough from the Gemini that they don't have to worry about basic kernel or program flaws.  The only parts of the Cosmo device likely to be screwed up in the first run is the front screen and/or the backlight for the keyboard.

And now - 7 hours later in the day on November 17, the offering has changed to a "Cosmo Campaign Week 3 Special" for $569 USD (28% off) with 200 Units offered at this price(??!!) with delivery still June 2019...

Well... now the Early Bird actually seems sold out for real. My guess that they wanted to keep them available throughout the first week, appears to have been correct. The final number of Early Bird Cosmos seems to be 1111, so somewhere along the 999 (-6) + 99, they must have sneaked another 19 in at some point.

Anyway, now anybody wanting to avoid possible first batch issues should be clear to back their devices, for an estimated "June" delivery. It's still possible to get the 31% discount by ganging up with one or four friends, but then you'll likely get first batch devices, should that concern you (my X25 Gemini works just fine).

The "Early Bird Special" with May delivery just returned (Nov 13, 7:00 PM New York City Time).!!

First there were 500 (and I jumped in...#329)

Then there were 999...

I just carefully watched the number shrink to 6 and then magically increase to 99 (!!!)

Should we have a pool to determine how long this goes on???

And today (Nov 13), briefly, the number went to zero and the "Early Bird" for $549 disappeared and the price went to $599 (25% discount).  A few people bought. And now, just a few hours into it, the "Early Bird Special" is BACK, price back to $549...and now it says "only 74 left."

I guess we should now call this the "appearing and disappearing Early Bird Special..."?

Just noticed the $549 Early Bird Special is back again. As of now 831 of 999 are claimed.

From what I understand, the three or so that backed the $595 perk, can just cancel and back the Early Bird again. I guess this extension is final, as they went with 999, rather than 1000.

Actually, after the 999 they just extended it another 99....
