Zaurus - pdaXrom / Installing Feeds Error
« on: July 03, 2006, 02:56:41 am »
None taken.

In my experience, though, such as it is, this problem only manifested itself with the Sandisk cards, and then only when formatted ext2 or ext3. I'm not really making any comment as t why this happened, just that it did.

The card formatted fine, if I recall correctly. After a week or two, stuff would disappear. A file system check brought up loads of errors. I remember others mantioning the same kind of thing, so I replaced it with the Lexar I use now. I have had no problems with it in well over a year.

For more, see https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4960&hl= for example.

Before you reformat your SD card, what type is it? I would strongly recommend not reformatting if its a Sandisk card. I had all kinds of problems. Search the forums for others views on this.

I have a Lexar card which is absolutely fine formatted ext3. I've also tried a couple of other makes with no problems.

E won't start for me since upgrading to this version. I get a white screen with a short black line coming up from the bottom of the screen.

The only error I'm seeing is:

"The locale 'C' cannot be found on your system. Please install this locale or try something else"

X runs ok, and I can launch the default windowmanager etc.

Anyone any suggestions?

Another issue is the battery charging one. That would be the show stopper for me. I'd have thought that no bluetooth card is going to drain your Z's battery as quickly as the phone trying to charge itself.

We live in a capitolistic society, or rather, the US is a capitolistic society. Thus, everyone has the opportunity to make as much money as they can.

That's where you're wrong. The US is and always was a constitutional republic.

The preamble of the Constitution is clear - the US is built upon the princliple of the general welfare. The US is also constitutionally based upon the principle that the Federal Government is the only entity with the right to raise credit.

It is not a capitalist country in principle; in practice it wouldn't be if the citizens of the Republic stopped allowing themselves to be stepped on by the capitalist financiers. Then, maybe, artists would have the opportunity to make the music they want to make, that I might want to hear, and earn a reasonable wage for doing so.

Personally, where an artist I enjoy chooses to set up their own record label / distribution, they get my cash. Where the majority of the money goes to the RIAA, I'll go to allofmp3.com in the full knowledge its illegal for me to do so, because at this point it seems to be the only message to be sending to both the artists and the RIAA. And I believe they are getting the message loud and clear.

Democracy is the buzz word of the day. Lets have regime change around the world and bring all those poor people democracy. That's propoganda. Monopoly is and always was the policy of big business and there's nothing democratic about it.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / New Zaurus Software Effort
« on: June 18, 2006, 12:43:47 pm »
Chuckr,

Cacko and pdaxrom are not one and the same. As I recall, back in the pre c7x0 days, Maslovsky and Sashz worked together to produce enhancements to the Sharp ROMs available then. In those days, rather than the Sashz/OE wars, we had the Sashz/tkcROM wars, with accusations from Sashz that Proto has ripped off Cacko for tkcROM.

Some time after that, Sashz split off on his own to produce pdaXrom. Maslovsky continued work on Cacko and as far as I know still does, although things hasve been quiet recently.

So although there are historical ties, Cacko and pdaxrom are not the same.

Maybe I'm wrong, but you post suggests that you won't go ahead with this unless you get some people to join you in your efforts. Is that the case? I'd like to encourage you to just get on with it. I think people are tired of the "this system is better than that" bickering that we've had here for a long time. Show us what can be done that makes this system better, and people will follow you.

I'd like to suggest you speak the the OE guys in more depth, though. I think they made the choices they have for good reasons. I suggest it is worthwhile taking some more time to understand their reasons, so that even if you decide in the end that OE is not the way forward for you, you are at least prepared for the issues that you may run up against down the road.

I have Moin running nicely. I have it installed on a linux server and rsync the data directory over periodically. Works really well.

In the past I had WikkaWiki running as well. I went for Moin in the end because I preferred to have the data in text files rather than mysql.

This happens with the version I compiled for pdaXrom as well. The problem is that there is no mkfs program for the Zaurus, and bestcrypt doesn't know to look for mkfs.ext2 or mkfs.ext3 instead.

You need to create the container on a desktop machine and copy it to the Z for mounting by bctool.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / How To Backup And Restore?

For me, neither SD/CF works{/QUOTE]

Sounds to me like the Z doesn't like your CF card. What make and size is it? In my experience (700, 760, 3100), I can NAND backup and restore to anything up to 1GB, but no bigger.

General Discussion / Bluetooth Woes
« on: June 05, 2006, 04:32:16 pm »
Hi all,

Just bought a Pretec CompactBT (OC-BTEXX-A). I'm running pdaxrom beta1 at the moment ... I've no real inclination to upgrade just yet. Its stable for me, and its doing what I need day to day.

Here's what I'm seeing in /var/log/messages:

cardmgr[485]: + Done.
cardmgr[485]: socket 0: Pretec BT2000E Bluetooth Card
hcid[4813]: HCI dev 0 registered
/sbin/hotplug: no runnable /etc/hotplug/bluetooth.agent is installed
cardmgr[485]: executing: './bluetooth start hci0 2>&1'
cardmgr[485]: + Starting Bluetooth... Done.
hcid[4813]: HCI dev 0 up
hcid[4813]: Starting security manager 0

When I try to connect to the phone (a Motorola SLVR), I'm seeing:

pppd[5181]: Failed to open /dev/rfcomm0: Host is down

Can anyone give any pointers?

Thanks,

Mike.

I decided to have a look at the latest OZ, for comparisons sake.

I have the above problem too ... when I flash the e image (3.5.4.1) on the 760, it reboots, does its initial setup stuff and launches e. Great!

If I reboot, though, it seems to start ok, but bombs at the command prompt with "can't open display (null)."

Anyone?

Thanks,

Mike.

It behaves just like the Z. You have to touch the screen with the stylus - you can't wave the stylus a little above the screen and have the mouse move.

I haven't noticed any problem about resting my hand on the screen, though.

This seems (to me at least) like a reasonably well put together video. I think its important, though, not to get too hung up on it. The world has moved on, and what is more important to me now is the state of the global economy, which is at the point of collapse.

Even the mainstream media can't ignore it now. The Guardian reckoned the other day that over 1 million Britons would be seeking backruptcy in the immediate future. The BBC carried a story about the UK's Citizen's Advice Bureau concerns that people are already facing a lifetime of debt, with average credit card bills of £13,000. A huge number of these people have annual incomes less than £20,000.

So here's a question ... how can a post industrial economy, which produces nothing, and relies on Chinese cheap labour and consumerism to keep afloat, how does it stay afloat when the consumers finally run out of money?

I don't think it matters whether the video makers are right in their argument, or whether Cheney et al simply took advantage of the situation, if 9/11 was the Cheney Gang's Pearl Harbour - an excuse for a huge leap towards fascism in the form of loss of privacy, no fly lists, id cards, Patriot Act, wars, Halliburton, imprisonment without trial, torture, etc - then what's next if the economy continues to get out of control and these loons begin to feel even less sure of their positions?
