In your my.cnf file, find the [mysqld] section and change the \"user=\" line to user=root.

General Discussion / stopping apache
« on: May 09, 2004, 07:43:59 am »
Mark,

Apachectl was left out of the apache ipk for some reason, but you can get apachectl from the Zaurus Software Index.

As for your phpmyadmin problem, why not just install one of the mySQL clients on your PC, and forget about phpmyadmin?

You could start here:

http://www.kyz.uklinux.net/convlit.php

the home of Convert LIT. Source code included, and, I believe, will deal with DRMed files, so long as you have an activated copy of MS Reader.

This\'ll convert the .lit format to html, and you can use JPluck to convert it to pdb, and then you can read it on the Z using Opie Reader or whatever.

Isn\'t this what MickeyL has been asking for for months?

Seems to me that Sharp has no further interest in the original ideals behind the Zaurus. They aren\'t interested in this community.

So OZ/OE is the best option. Its already there and mature ... or are we all going to procrastinate ourselves to death discussing the million ways we *could* do things?

Lycoris has realised this. We should build on that momentum.

I couldn\'t get this to work either.

Today, I downloaded the source to 2.4.25 and it worked no probs. Now if I can only get X to start (graphics card driver), I\'ll be happy as a pig in ...

Off Topic forum / weird Samba problem
« on: March 23, 2004, 06:39:11 pm »
I work for a fund management company in London. We look after $4bn or so. We trade in all financial markets in the world and our trading decisions are made by a clever piece of real time software, developed in house, which takes data from Reuters, Bloomy and whatnot, processes it based on our trading strategies, and chucks out trades which are executed by our traders.

When it throws out a ticket to the traders, they have to try and fill that order as best they can. Once the order is filled, they use another app to record the prices that they actually traded at. This app saves this info to a trade file to disk named in the format YYYYmmdd-tradenumber.

So at the end of the day, a few hundred or thousand trades later, depending on the day, the trading system knows what should have been traded, and the trade files contain what was actually traded, and all this info has to be processed and reconciled.

We have other apps, again developed inhouse, to do this. These apps run on Linux boxes (IBM blades) and access the share where the trade files are kept (Win2k share) via smb.

Or, they would be on a Linux blade if Samba worked ...

We have come up against the annoying problem that when smb is used to mount a filesystem, and a directory listing is taken, random files \"disappear\" from the listing. They may or may not come back again if a second listing is taken, but maybe other files disappear this time.

Its kind of important to us that all the trade files get processed, so reliable directory listings are essential.

So I\'m just wondering if anyone on this forum has ever come across this problem or is aware of a solution? I suspect there isn\'t a fix ... we have googled this one to death. This is just a wild stab in the dark in case.

Our temporary fix is to run these apps on Windows instead. Yuck. Another option which I will begin investigating tomorrow is services for unix, which I believe is now a free download from MS. Maybe an NFS mount is more reliable.

Be nicer if there was a fix for this, though ...

Anyone?

Sharp ROMs / Problems with calcualtions in qt1.2
« on: March 22, 2004, 05:18:50 am »
Eh ... no. Its not the new ROM. I have the old one, with Neocal installed. When I ask for the square root of 8, I get 3.

Unless I check the preferences and change the number of decimal places from the default zero to a more sensible number.

You checked that, I presume ..? ;o)

Possibly a combination of both?

General Discussion / sd card woes
« on: February 06, 2004, 11:49:59 am »
Mine was a 256.

SD seems to be not so good on the Z, which is a shame. I\'ve borrowed a 256MB Lexar for a while. If it seems stable, I\'ll get one of those ...

General Discussion / sd card woes
« on: February 06, 2004, 03:36:07 am »
Having searched the forums, it seems that SD cards going bad is not so uncommon ...

Mine\'s from Expansys in the UK - their own brand, so who knows who made it - and ran perfectly in my 5500, but since I moved to the 760, I\'ve had nothing but trouble, whether formatted FAT of ext2.

What I noticed from previous postings is that there are some brands that seem to be unreliable, but is there any concensus on a manufacturer whose cards work reliably with the 760?

Thanks,

Mike.

Read some of the other threads about this, eg \"Spencer gone . . .\"

There are reports it will return.
