You should look at:

http://www.linux-laptop.net/

Look for examples by folks that have written how-tos for your specific hardware.  There might be some points there to direct you which distro would be a good match.  I use Fedora Core on all my equipment and have had absolutely no hardware issues since Core 2.  Just downloaded Core 3 DVD via the bittorrent and will be trying that soon.

Qt/Qtopia / can't find -lqt-mt lib...Fedora Core 2
« on: November 03, 2004, 08:04:32 am »
Oh my God... I may have made a Jr. League Qt programming error... I can't verify until I get home from work as I have Core 1 at work and Core 2 at home... but I think I was trying to use "qmake" instead of "tmake" last night.  What was I smoking???  Must have been good.

Qt/Qtopia / can't find -lqt-mt lib...Fedora Core 2
« on: November 02, 2004, 09:57:16 pm »
I swear I did this before...but what might I be missing.

I installed the qt 1.7 rpm and all the compat libs from Core 2 disk 3 as well as the cross compiler rpms...
as described in http://mcb.freewebpage.org/edslug/edslug5-1.html

For some reason I'm getting this error when I compile apps that previously worked on non-yum updated kernel for Fedora Core 2...

g++  -o glucozaurus glucozaurus.o glucopaint.o main.o moc_glucozaurus.o   -L/opt/Qtopia/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -luuid -ljpeg -lqpe -lqt-mt -lXext -lX11 -lm
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lqt-mt
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [glucozaurus] Error 1

There is no such qt-mt lib under /opt/Qtopia...my dev-x86-qpe.sh script looks like this...
#!/bin/bash
# dev-x86-qpe.sh script
CROSSCOMPILE=/opt/Embedix/tools/arm-linux/bin:/opt/Embedix/tools/bin
QPEDIR=/opt/Qtopia
QTDIR=/opt/Qtopia
PATH=${QTDIR}/bin:${PATH}:${CROSSCOMPILE}
TMAKEPATH=/opt/Qtopia/tmake/lib/qws/linux-x86-g++/
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${QTDIR}/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
export QPEDIR QTDIR PATH TMAKEPATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH PS1
echo "Altered environment for Sharp Zaurus Development x86"

Any help from Fedora Qt programmers????

Thanks in advance.

5x00 General discussions / making movies for the Zaurus

Well I shrunk down the video to 5fps, and 96khz mono sound and it still is slow.  Do I have to flash the ROM or can I just install a different video player or is the SD read too slow, or is the file too big.  The mpg is encoded at 192bps.  10 minutes ends up being about 20Meg.  Any hints about just what to install or how to encode the vids?

General Discussion / Linux books
« on: October 30, 2004, 02:09:46 pm »
Hi,

I recommend the following site to review the 100's of different flavors of Linux:
http://www.distrowatch.com/

Fedora Core 3 is coming out in a few days...
http://fedora.redhat.com/

If you want to install on a laptop, checkout this site for tips/etc...
http://www.linux-laptop.net/

Lots of info at...
http://www.linux.org/

Lots of Z, info at...
http://cmisip.home.insightbb.com/zaurus.htm

And of course there is a book you can read on-line for free, that won't help you with Linux, but will explain the mindset of FREE..."Free as in Freedom"...

Question on this topic...
Say I have a 10 minute VOB file I decrypted from a DVD
Has anyone used DVDshrink to get it just the right size for the Z?
I compressed it to the max, and got the file down to 212M so it would fit on my 256M SD card, and it doesn't play, it just clicks and then goes away...are there other steps I'm missing?

I want to watch Troops on my Z!

Accessories / sd card doom list
« on: October 22, 2004, 11:08:53 am »
I tried that link you said was down,,,and it redirected me to the site hacking.the.cia

Don't do this from work if your company tracks the sites you hit...I'm probably on the "watch list" now.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Prboom in 3.5.1? Any success?
« on: October 19, 2004, 09:48:29 am »
I have it working...at least the demo wad file...haven't been able to get doom2 to work right yet.

To get it to work I installed the following ipkgs:
prboom_2.2.3-2_arm.ipk
doomdemo_1.8a_arm.ipk
libSDL_1.2.6cvs-1_arm.ipk
libSDL-mixer_1.2.5cvs-1_armk.ipk
libSDL-net_1.2.5cvs-1_arm.ipk
timidity (guspat-20000706-required.tar.gz)

Setup the lib/share paths for timidity in /usr/local/
I installed the timidity stuff on /mnt/card/.timidity and
made a link to it:
ln -s /mnt/card/.timidity /usr/local/lib/timidity
ln -s /mnt/card/.timidity /usr/local/share/timidity

(The MIDI sound stuff takes up alot of space, 18M.)

I also installed the wad files in /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/share/games/doom/

See this page it is very helpful:

Cxx0 General discussions / Zaurus good for "road coders"?
« on: October 08, 2004, 10:45:16 am »
I use the keyboard almost always when entering data...not editing files...rather than the software handwriting junk.

I have coded Qtopia programs for the Z, but almost always did it on a full sized keyboard running VNC...and have never actually compiled apps on the Z, but only used the cross-compiler on Linux.

Hello to another Z bible reader. I love the program and heavily use the Websters Dictionary and RSV and KJV data I loaded on /mnt/card.
