General Discussion / Where Do People In Japan Go For Support?

At Sharp Life Plaza, it's said to be a best seller. Bottom left of this page.
I don't always take a seller at their word...

Quote
I also have read somewhere else that they have sold out of Picsel Browser for Zaurus,
due to demand.
And a couple of weeks ago, at Sharp Life Plaza, they were having a "Special"
They were offering, for very low price, or giving away,
Picsel Browser on the 256mb card with a purchase of a C3100 or C3000.
If it was sold out, how did they have stock to give away? (?_?)

Don't get me wrong, I think Picsel Browser is a good product, and it might well be that a lot of people have bought it. However, I wish it wasn't tied to the SD card (a reason often cited for not purchasing it), and I wish that I could get it to run on something other than the default Sharp (and Cacko) ROM.

I know a lot of people with Zauruses in Japan have purchased Picsel Browser for Zaurus.
Really? I haven't seen any stores that even carry it... I had to special order my copy.

Quote
Where do they go for technical questions?
You can try asking on the 2ch mobile forum, though it's Japanese only: http://pc8.2ch.net/mobile/

I think Picsel Browser has it's own method of doing things.
Picsel Browser is available on many platforms, and is not specific to Qt/E. Picsel seems to have taken their base software and modified it just enough to work with the Qt/E display system.

I can make a PDF launch Picsel Browser when clicking on a PDF in a filemanager,
but this only launches Picsel Browser. It doesn't open the PDF file. I have to open
it manually, just like I would launching Picsel Browser from the icon, then opening the file.
From the command line, you can run 'pic-browser' followed by the complete (absolute) path to the file to open it. Perhaps you can use this somehow to do what you want. Note, though, that using this method when a copy of Picsel Browser is already running causes my Z's GUI to lockup, so be warned.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Sl-c3200?

Reading through the discussion at that link, it pretty much boils down to "I heard from a guy at a store...", followed by an argument about not being able to backup the information. In other words, no real basis, mostly speculation and rumor.

This doesn't mean it's not true, but, as always, I'd recommend caution before getting any hopes up.

Software / Opera Mini

I am running 7.55 on my C3000 and it is not bad but if i could get AJAX on my Z that would be great
Also how is the speed?
As I mentioned in my followup post, I was mistaken about the AJAX support; if you want AJAX, you would need Opera Mobile, not Mini. Mini seems to be a minimalistic browser aimed at phones.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / New Minimo (0.013)
« on: February 20, 2006, 07:04:22 pm »
I haven't used Minimo in the past, so maybe it's always had this functionality, but looking at the screenshots for 0.013 (WM version), it appears to support AJAX - one of the screenshots has it using Google Maps.

I have yet to find a decent browser for the Zaurus that supports AJAX, so I'm rather interested in getting my hands on this.

Hardware Mods / Stuffing Serial Bluetooth Module Inside C1k Casing
« on: February 15, 2006, 09:00:22 pm »
This might have been mentioned already, but the following link was posted on Mobile Daily News yesterday:

http://www.piro.hopto.org/~piro/pukiwiki/p...%A2%B2%BD%5D%5D

Basically, someone took apart a USB BT dongle and stuffed it into his C3000.

Software / Opera Mini
« on: February 15, 2006, 08:12:32 pm »
After realizing that there were multiple versions of Opera Mini available, I was able to run the 'basic' version (MIDP 1.0); the 'advanced' (MIDP 2.0) seems to require functionality that me4se does not yet support.

Either way, it doesn't matter... I found that it doesn't fully support AJAX afterall, as it doesn't provide full rendering (for that, would require Opera Mobile).

Thanks for the help, though.

just a quick note for those interested: the low memory version of Opera Mini (UserAgent: Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/1.1.2421/lofi/nordic/de; mobile phone; de; U; ssr)) will run on the Z using Jeode in conjunction with ME4SE. :D
Have you actually tested this? I've tried both evm and blackdown, using me4se.jar with and without the SUN MIDP2.0 classes, but get errors everytime.

Assuming you've got it working, what is the command line that you use?

My interest in using it is that it supposedly supports AJAX.

Unfortunetly  I think that the future of the Zaurus is a mistery because there is not activity in the official Zaurus web site since a while:
http://ezaurus.com
Actually, there has been some activity - just yesterday. Sharp has announced that they are shutting down the "User" and "3rd Party" sections of the ezaurus.com site at the end of February. They do not state why.

They can probably tell that a foreigner wrote it as opposed to a native Japanese person, but meh, what the hell.
Well, considering that you specifically stated in the mail that you were a foreigner... (^_^)

The Digitraveler can only connect through the serial port (or whatever that connection at the base of the SL-5500 is called) on my 5500.  Since the C1000 does not have that type of connection; ergo,  I cannot connect the Digitraveler GPS device to the C1000.
Actually, the C1000 (as well as the C3x00) _does_ have a Sharp serial port - it's on the side with the USB connector, hidden behind a cover.

Whether it will work for you seems to depend on the hardware/cable that you use. Try searching the forums for more information (i.e. 'C3000' or 'C1000' and 'serial').

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Dictionary
« on: January 31, 2006, 05:33:13 pm »
I'm assuming that you mean the Koujien and Genius dictionaries? As far as I have found, it's not possible to use the files apart from the Zaurus. Yes, they are in EPWING format, but they are encrypted. To use them, you need Sharp's version of libeb, which links to a library called libzsecure; as far as I know, no x86 (or other non-ARM) build of these libraries exists.

It is possible, though, to use the libraries on other Z models, by copying and force-loading the above mentioned libraries.

I want a dictionary that gives example sentences such as Kodansha's furigana dictionary.
I'm assuming that your familiar with Edict (http://ftp.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/00INDEX.html#dic_fil)?
There is also an examples dictionary available on that page; while I don't use Edict itself that much, I have found the examples dict. to be rather useful.

3) Can anyone recommend good sd/cf cards for me? Are there any compatability issues with the Zaurus or will any card work? I'm thinking of buying a large card (I hear CF cards come in 4/6/8 gig sizes).
You'll have to use a CF WiFi card; the Zaurus's SD support is limited to memory cards. (Technically, there does exist an SD WiFi card that works with some Zaurus models; however, it seems that it is mostly a hack and that the performance is subpar).

4) Does anyone have some Japan-specific shopping advice? I live in Kyoto and was thinking of buying through http://www.kakaku.com/ (Japanese web site) which I've used in the past and seems very cheap for Japan.
I usually use kakaku as well.

If you dont mind me asking are you simply going to add in support for the latest gpsd or are there other new features being added in as well?
So far, the major changes in the version that I'm working on are:
- uses gpsd 2.30 (latest release)
- uses non-overlapping map segments
-- this saves a lot of storage space
-- maps segments are seemlessly stitched together so that segment edges are never seen (except, of course, at edges of entire map)
- no longer uses a tabbed interface

Right now I am working on moving the GPS unit status information to a separate Qtopia task tray applet; I'll probably release the applet (along with the ipk of gpsd 2.30) before qpeGPS2.
