Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Compact Flash Question
« on: May 21, 2005, 05:05:33 am »
hi quasarlyte

You say you are new to linux, so i guess you are a windows user. This means that you can use your cf card both with your reader/writer and with your zaurus only if the card is formatted as Fat. This is the default format for those card, so it won't be a problem at all.

Basically, you have to think about your zaurus as a laptop with a cf reader/writer. Your cf card acts just like a floppy or a cd rom. this mean you can transfer on it any kind of data.

If your zaurus has the needed program (video player for videos, etc...) you can any  file you want from anywhere on the Z, just like you can with your Desktop pc. You'll find the datas that you wrote on your cf card in the /mnt/cf/ directory. 'mnt' stands for "mount", and in this directory you'll find all the external storage devices. For exemple, /mnt/card is for sd card.

So if you want to listen for a mp3 file, copy it on your cf card with your reader/writer, plug the cf card in your zaurus, open the multimedia player, and open the file that you will find in /mnt/cf/

I hope my non absolutely proper english will help you.

I guess you will often have this kind of newbie troubles, we all have had them. But hold on, it wothes the pain ! And welcome to OZ users  community

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Word Processor And Spreadsheet On Oz?
« on: May 15, 2005, 05:33:34 am »
Hey, (good ?) news !!

TextMaker Does work under opie, with sharp-compat-libs. At least so does the demo ipk availiable at their download page.

The point is that it crashes sometimes, for exemple when i try the "Info and ordering" tab.  This makes i'm not sure it's a good idea to buy this prog : what if we can't enter the registration code ?

I was a beta tester so i still have my old registration code, but i erased the beta ipk so i can't test this.

Does someone still have this ipk fil (rev 400, if i remember well) ?

make sure this feed is in your feed list (/etc/ipkg.conf) and don't forgett to add your machine feed as explained here http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/2005/04/23/machine-feeds/

Hope this help.

hi bcom75.

First, welcome to the OZ users community.

1) Prefer a cf card for falshing. Datas are encrypted on SD cards, and i'm not sure it will  work with a sd,but this point needs confirmation. Then your card must be FAT formated, not FAT32. (Fat16 is the default format, it is good too.)

2) opie-image-akita-20050427214434.rootfs.img = initrd.bin
zImage-akita-20050427214434.bin = zImage.bin
updater.sh = updater.sh

3) Just flash with the files listed here
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/c1000/ (UPDATE : lardman is right about it... the upgrade image fixes some minor troubles.)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Word Processor And Spreadsheet On Oz?
« on: May 14, 2005, 09:00:36 am »
don'y waste your money with TextMaker, it doesn't work under opie. I downloaded the ipk demo file from their website, installed it without any problem, but i couldn't launch it because it has not been compiled for OZ...

A GOOD word processor is really what we need under opie. Opie-sheet is much too limited, and anyway Hancom sucks... For now, the best solution seems to be Pocketworkstation. GPE is getting better and better each version, but the OpenZaurus 3.5.3 GPE image is still to bugged for a daily use  (espacially the bug that prevent you from logging in...). The next one will certainly be perfect for word processing, and i'm sure lots of differents desktop manager progs will soon be ported to GPE, so you may find something that will make you confortable with it.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Moving To Oz From Cacko
« on: May 05, 2005, 07:52:29 am »
i think (but not sure) that during the Cacko rom installation process, you can partition your Z back to it's original state. Have a look at this.

Anyway, NAND restore is not a problem. I did it seeveral times on my c750, and works like a charm. Just download the good file for your Z  ( http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-...iginal-backups/ ), check the md5 sum, proceed carefully and it's done !

good luck !

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Usb Networking And Mandrake 10.1
« on: May 05, 2005, 07:47:18 am »
thanks to Xora, hrw, lardman and especially to b0ti, this problem is solved by upgrading my mandrake kernel to a 2.6.11 version.

Not very handy on a distro that claims to be the best for beginners...

mandriva 2005 LE (ie mandrake 10.2) will not have such a problem.

thanks again to everyone.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Newbie File Space Questions
« on: April 27, 2005, 11:24:13 am »
hi totaln00b

on the c750, i would suggest using Ashley's script to have a single root partiotion and no /home partition in order to prevent that kind of troubles. (search the forum, you'll find how to do it. I posted something about this some time ago... ).

Otherwise, check your /tmp directory, or maybe you tried to install an ipk and you ran out of sapce during the downloading, so the doxnloading process failed and left the partial ipk somewhere on your internal memory. Coul someone pricise where temp ipks are stored please ? i don't remember...

Cheers

Yup I had the same problem.  The only way I could get Mandrake to see the Z was using the USB Storage app on the Z

  yaaarghh !! it's not fair !!!!

The usbnetworking works with pdaxrom and with oz 3.5.3 gpe, but those rom are not as user friendly as oz opie ! There must be a way to have it working...

When you plug in the usb cable, something like hotplug (?) is in charged with identifying the pda, and then it launches the usb0 interface. My guess is that two lines correspond to the identification given by hotplug (or whatever) and that mandrake is using the wrong one.

Now the questions are :
1) How do i get the identification (number i guess) given to the pda ?
2) What file is the list of possible configurations ?
3) What should i change the configuration from this file into ? (what is yours ?)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Usb Networking And Mandrake 10.1

Hi !

i've just flashe Open Zaurus 3.5.3 on my Zaurus sl-C750 with a 2.6.11 kernel. I can't access the network at all from the Zaurus...

The desktop pc is a mandrake 10.1 with a 2.6.8.1-24mdk kernel, and i'm connected to it trough usb.

- Usb0 is up and configured on the zaurus side.
- usbnet is loaded on the mandrake side, but i can't get usb0 up on it.

I did everything that was told on the oz website, but it doesn't work.

the strange point is here (on the zaurus side) :

Code: [Select]
#dmesg
(...)
usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using address 25
usb 2-2: configuration #2 chosen from 2 choices

I don't understand the 2 choices part.

"usb0: register usbnet at usb-0000:00:10.3-1, Linux Device, 3a:6b:24:1f:af:0a" is what i should get with dmesg...
what is the file that rules this registration ?

thanks in advance for your precious help.
