Off Topic forum / New Nokia-like Brick Running Linux 2.6 & Qtopia
« on: February 21, 2005, 04:59:53 am »
Here's a Phone, by Road GmbH called S101, in the style of the Nokia Communicators, but with what looks like a Psion keyboard and with a version that runs Linux kernel 2.6 and Qtopia:

Security and Networking / New Bluetooth Drivers
« on: January 09, 2005, 08:28:39 pm »
I've finally got around to updating the Bluetooth BlueZ driver ipk.

This is only for Sharp ROMs and variants of Sharp ROMs, excluding Cacko ROMs, that use the 2.4.18 kernel. So for example this includes Sharp ROMs on SL-5500, SL-5600, SL-6000, SL-C850, but NOT SL-3000.

Here's some of the improvements:
  • Ambicom BT2000C Support. Thanks to tetron for spotting this had been included in the latest drivers. EDIT: Actually it doesn't look like this is working
  • Socket Card Rev G Support without requiring the extra bluez-csr-serial ipk. Thanks to maslovsky for sorting this out
  • Hopefully Dlink, Mavin, Billionton, BrainBoxes, and Dell cards should all be supported 'out of the box'
  • Should work 'out of the box' on the SL-6000. (It moves /etc/pcmcia.bm3.conf out of the way on installation and back again on removal) Thanks to DrWowe for spotting what was wrong previously
  • EDIT: Included hci_usb driver would should allow SL-6000L owners to use USB Bluetooth dongles with the appropriate USB cable.
EDIT: The PAN profile should be working now as I resolved a kernel module problem.

Before installing the new ipk, backup your files under /etc/bluetooth and /etc/pcmcia/peers. Then you can easily restore them after installing the new ipk. (You will need to run '/etc/rc.d/init.d/bluetooth restart' after restoring rfcomm.conf and hcid.conf)

Also uninstall all bluez packages before installing this one, including the bluez-csr-serial, which is no longer required with the new package.

So here is the new ipk (Note: the 1st, 3rd and 4th underscores [_] in the filename need to be changed to dashes [-] after downloading):

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Who's Using All The Bandwidth?
« on: January 09, 2005, 05:04:54 pm »
Ack, just when I wanted to download a file from the ZUG downloads the ZUG server bandwidth utilisation is maxed out

Seriously, what gives? I've never seen the bandwith usage this high before. I don't see any Slashdot articles linking to the ZUG.

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Uploading Files To The Forums
« on: December 18, 2004, 08:54:13 pm »
I've tried several times to upload files, such as ipks, to the forums using Konqeuror (with several different 3.2x versions), but every time I get the error "You cannot upload a file of this type".

Yet uploading the same file with Firefox works fine. The file is sent by Konqueror, but something goes wrong with the upload somewhere.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Off Topic forum / Tie up between Danger (Hiptop) & Sharp

Curious tie up between Danger (make of the Hiptop) and Sharp:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor.../tech_danger_dc

Sharp seems to be going towards Symbian, so I doubt we'll see a Linux Qtopia PE based phone

Software / Another Calendar/Todo Combined App
« on: February 11, 2004, 04:34:34 am »
There seems to be a load of free open-source calendars popping up at the moment (which is Very Good).

Here\'s another one and it looks *very* promising: http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1694

I haven\'t tried it just yet, but it seems to have several nice features/settings looking at the home page:

- Combined Calendar/Todo view
- Repeating event exceptions (Yay!)
- Link events/todo to any file with an associated app
- Keyboard shortcuts for various actions
- Templates

Is it me or has the link for editing the FAQ disappeared since the site update? I cannot find it anymore.

Accessories / Socket Bluetooth Rev G working with BlueZ out of the box
« on: January 11, 2004, 08:06:03 pm »
I\'ve release another package that replaces /etc/pcmcia/serial with a hacked version. The upshot of this is with the latest BlueZ packages, the Socket Rev G card should work out of the box, fingers crossed. For other CSR UART based cards see further down.

To summarize; uninstall any previous BlueZ packages and install the following packages:

http://www.cpinkney.org.uk/susp-resume_0.9-3.1.ipk
http://zaurus.newkirk.us/sudo_0.1_arm.ipk
http://community.zaurus.com/download.php/5...2.4.18d_arm.ipk (or http://community.zaurus.com/download.php/5...preempt_arm.ipk if you are using a pre-emptive patched kernel)
http://community.zaurus.com/download.php/4...z_0.9.1_arm.ipk
http://community.zaurus.com/download.php/5...ial_0.1_arm.ipk (NOTE: This replaces /etc/pcmcia/serial so you will lose any changes you have made to it and it is restored to the Sharp default if you uninstall this package)

Then follow this howto:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...ename=Bluetooth

This may make it easier to get other CSR UART based cards working too that are awkward like the Socket Rev G card (such as the Mavin, Brain Box, Billionton and Bluetake cards). With these cards you should only have to install the packages above, add a line to /etc/bluetooth/uart in the same format as the existing line and follow the howto above.

The format of /etc/bluetooth/uart is:

Code: [Select]
:

Where <Product_Info> is the product info text given by the command \'cardctl ident\' with the CF card plugged in.

It is done like this as different CSR based cards seem to require different hciattach parameters, although all of them should start with \"/dev/ttyS3\" and some may only require that. You might have to search around a bit and play to find the correct hciattach parameters.

Please let me know if you get the Socket Rev G card working ok with these packages and if any other cards work with this.

One of these days I am going to get my finger out and finish my Bluetooth GUI so that all of this can be done with a nice graphical interface.

Enjoy
