seems you had diffrent ideas to mine

btw i am a hardware guy not a software one, so its do this or do nothing

this past year or so  i have been working non-stop in real life to the point where my doctors are telling me to take it easy, considering i have never been a healthy person (thats why i see the doctors so often) to begin with this is fairly major news to me. so now little by little i am dedicating time to some of my projects.

it will take time but i am doing this for me not you, there are a couple of free designs out there for arm bassed boards and they might fit what you want and need better

General Discussion / Automatic Wake Up When Opened

posibly, however as far as i amaware it would need a kernel patch.

i belive the open close screen hindge buttons are connected to the GPIOs rather tahn the keyboard scanning matrix, if it is then it shouldnt be to hard to tell them to cause an interupt on a level change (close open)

funnily enough on my c3000 i can wake up from suspend by pushing one of the round buttons (home calender or one of them) dont know if this is a bug or a feature

it should show up as a modem for the phone part at least, that would be the easist thing to get running but i wonder if the wifi is some special module or if it runs over a serial link as well,

can you give up the readout from cardctl?

General Discussion / What Are Recommended Video Encoding Settings?
« on: September 07, 2007, 01:57:26 pm »
i will be adding that one to my list, the one thing i dont like about using mplayer in a looping script is that you have no control over cropping, this looks like it is simmilar to virtual dub where you can set the settings for each file and pass by hand and delay it as a batch job for latter (THE major selling point for virtual dub IMHO)

if you can always remove the black bars on video streams, it helps compression, even if its only a pixel or two or is just a tinting towards the edge of the screen, as any sudden change in color affects bitrates, plus it makes things look alot nicer

if it dosent fit the asspect ratio of the Z's screen then let your movie player put the black bars back in software, its faster and you get a better image

note: i used to hand encode everything by fiddling with the render options (even between passes, you can get a good speed up by dropping stuff you dont need to do in the first pass), cropping and manual insertion of i-frames instead of letting the software place them every X frames (huge comperssion savings if you know what you are doing)

also note huge speedups gan be gained with virtual dub if you change the order you apply filters, de-telicline should always bee done on first in my opinion but fiddling with filtering before and after you do a resize and rotate can GREATLY effect quality and encode speed

i think that its the right move on thier part, it is a limited device compared to alot of the stuff that comes out

many people scoffed at the idea of it bieng a tethered device but i didint see too many people who really thought the idea through, then again just give most people a windows PC in a similar form factor and they would be happy

i am unhappy as it looked to be a very very nice hardware platform to run linux on, i dont care about plam rolling its own stack for me i am capable of turning it into what i want. maybe i can pick up a dev unit on ebay

C1000/3x00 Hardware / 3200/860 Power Adaptor Question
« on: September 04, 2007, 05:35:37 am »
as long as its 5v and at least 500mas on the output it should be fine

the polarity you are looking for is gnd on the outside and 5v on the inside, there should be a picture that looks like a dot with a C shape around it, the c shape indicates the outside and what is connected to and the dot the pin

rough diagram:

gnd ---Co----5v (except the dot or "o" is inside the C

luckily most 5v chargers are like that but i have one or two with incorrect polarity (and they are now marked on the tip so i dont use them with the Z)

not to mention the low freq cutoff is normally fairly high.

i did have a fairly good usb sound card that did 24 bit @ 96khz which gets past point one but not point 2, in fact i have no idea what the freq. response is like on that thing. from most of the graphs i have seen the filters gut in very ffairly leaving a heavily distorted signal

then again sound cards were never really designed for that sort of thing

xoscope has its uses, esp for low freq signal injection

xoscope is nice but it has its limits, mainly bieng limited to the sampaling freq. up to less than half the sample rate (ie 48000hz becomes 24000hz max) this might be fine for some people  but for some things you need a higher sampling range

the only real down side i can see on this thing (for me at least) is the 2mhz capture rate, somthing higher would have been nice but its better than nothing and is most likly fine for what i will do with it
