OESF Announcements / Site Outage Oct 25 - 26

Fortunately we weren't attacked.  Unfortunately Dreamhost disabled my account

Basically we were on a shared server with dreamhost (on the strictly business plan), and our websites were using > 25% utilization of the server and apparently that's just too much.

They've been notifying (automated messages) me for a while now (203 days), and I had responded to them several times telling them to move me to a dedicated server.  On Monday Oct 24 a support rep emailed me saying that I had 24 hours to respond or the account would be disabled.  Unfortuantely this has been an extremely busy week at work, so I didn't see the email until Tuesday night.  From there it took them about a day and a half to re-enable my account (and all services should be back online).

By sometime next week we should be on a dedicated server plan (New Moon), and I paid for a year so we shouldn't see troubles like this for a little while...

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Well, damn, sorry to read that. Will the dedicated server cost extra, and should we users perhaps throw a little paypal your way?

For Sale / Wanted / Does Piel Frama's Leather Case Fit The 5600?
« on: October 23, 2005, 08:26:34 pm »

For about a year I own a zaurus sl-5600. Until now, I have been carrying around my zaurus without a case in my pocket. Only the screen is protected with a plastic cover. The buttons stay uncovered, so the device is switched on and off and starting applications by accident all day, draining the battery. I recently found that Piel Frama made a leather case for the 5500. That case would prove very useful for my zaurus sl-5600. But I wonder if the case fits the 5600, despite the bigger battery.

Someone tried it yet?

No idea about Piel Frama, but you could do worse than ThePouch.com for a neoprene case. They handsew cases individually ordered for a quite reasonable price.  I got one, works for my Z5500.
disclaimer -- no connection to ThePouch.com save being  a satisfied customer.

Mine showed up in the mail in Toronto today. So far, it holds a charge in the Z; we'll see how long a charge lasts!

Further to this, I haven't really had a duration test yet; it seems to last longer than the EA-BL06,but I haven't been out with it for any length of time ...

General Discussion / Ambicom Wl1100c Wireless Install

Has anyone installed a Ambicom WL1100C wireless CF card on ZaurusSL5500 rom3.1 ?
I had the card working on a Ipaq with Familiar-0.82 Linux using Hostap drivers, but I can't get
hostap-modules to install on the Zaurus.
Where would I get the correct drivers for this card?

Thanks
Jim

It works right away in the 3.13 ROM with the "new" cacko kernel; not necessary to add a driver. At least I've got kismet to run. I have yet to connect to an adhoc 802.11b network, but I can see the access points!

I happened onto this thread too late to help, but: If you're going to go the OZ route, be aware that you'll have to have a network connection, be it a CF wifi card or a CF modem network card - there's no way to sync it to Windoze via usb. I found that out the hard way.

Hi! (to all)

I was a little behind schedule with building the batteries, because I didn't get my NTCs (I need them for building the batteries... :-/ ).
But They are all on their way now. So it could take a week (max!) until you'll all get you batteries!
Sorry!

General Discussion / Sd Mounting Problem
« on: October 04, 2005, 12:05:41 am »
I'm having this sort of problem with a Sandisk card also. Guy at work is trying to sell me a 256MG Sandisk SD; he's formatted it on his Mac, on a Windows PC at the hospital, and in a digital camera, but every time I try it in my 5500 I can see the files ... but I can't either read them or erase them. It'd be a passable deal for $C30, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to pass it up.

I use CDex to extract mp3s from my own CDs. http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/ Pretty versatile, open source, no hassles. Windows only, unfortunately.

General Discussion / Who are you and where are you from?
« on: September 22, 2005, 08:40:25 pm »
Hi --

I'm a 59-year-old semiretired hospital porter in Toronto, ON; an ex-Yank, union militant, and NDP supporter. Some people were born to be hanged, I was born to be Canadian.

I bicycle for transportation/recreation, read sf and fantasy, photograph SF fan events around the Greater Toronto Area. I've owned a Franklin eBookman, a treo90, and now a Zaurus SL5500. By far the best handheld yet, at least until I can afford to upgrade to a clamshell Z.

oops. sorry about the above. fingers too quick on the keyboard.....
Marty ---- I want to do what you did with the FLNP120 ---- is it still working?? My Z 5500 battery no longer holds a charge and like you I am reluctant to pay nearly 50 euros for a replacement. Is it possible to dumb your explanation down a little and provide more detail? I don't like messing around in batteries and, though happy to solder, I don't understand what you mean.
Thanks.

Just thought I'd join in this thread, as I too will be a Zaurus-newbie within days.  I am just awaiting the arrival of my 5600.

Any thoughts on tweaks to apply right off the bat anyone?  I was thinking of trying out the Watapon ROM, or maybe trying out the pre-emptive/cachebug-disabling patch on a Sharp 1.32 ROM.

I can't wait to play around with this beastie!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=92641\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Have fun with it. The first thing you'll want to do, however, is make darned sure you've got all your ducks in a row equipment-wise. Make sure you have a working reader-writer for your CF card ... and make sure of course you have a CF card, preferably 32 MB or above. You'll need ém to flash different ROMs to your Z. The first time I flashed, it was to the 3.5.3 ROM ... and then I discovered that it would not connect through the USB cracle, and I'd have to connect via WiFi, and guess who didn't have a wiFi CF card?

Right in one.

Anyway, have fun with it.

What killer, critical App would make you switch from one ROM to another?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=91467\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

e-book reader, basic wireless Internet capability so's I can check my email etc. from a Starbucks or whatever, and a useable video player ... Right at the moment I have all of those with the latest Opie-reader and qpdf2,  my wireless card on its way here, and the latest build of the vlc player. I'd really like a 3100 to play with but that's down the road budget-wise.
