5x00 General discussions / Viewing Comics/manga On 5500?

Hi!
I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions as to what image viewer i should use to go through multiple jpg files quickly. Should be able to move around the image, zoom, and proceed to the next pic (preferably without using the stylus)

Thanks!

/Jesper

I have had some success with using Opie-reader to display comix I have converted from HTML using Mobipocket Publisher. Also using qpdf2 to view comics converted to PDFs, although that wants to use the stylus ... what would be really nice, of course, would be a port of CDisplay to the Z. As is it's only built for Windows. So: Using OpenOffice.org, edit your raw .jpg or .gif images into an HTML page or a PDF document. Convert the HTML using Mobipocket Publisher or perhaps Plucker to a file the Z will read ... or you could even use the Opera browser on the Z to view the HTML page, I suppose. Haven't tried that yet!

Sharp ROMs / Failing To Sync Through Cradle

Help! My SL 5500, running ROM 3.1.3, is failing to connect to my PC today. It hooked up just fine yesterday through the USB cradle. This morning no connection could be made. I can't restore from backup, I can't sync the address book, and Zaurus File Transfer won't open a connection. I did a soft reset on the Z, no improvement. I did a hard reset, still no connection. WTF?!?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=90947\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I finally reflashed the ROM and got it to connect. Thank eBay for my CF card reader.

Heyya. I've tried downloading a few bits & pieces from the ZUG site's download area, and got the following error every time:

Access Deniederror : admin_execute(modules/UpDownload/admin.php,UpDownload_admin_DownloadsModDownload)

I take it it's not meant to be like this?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=89394\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I'm still getting
Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/.bluebell/miamlh1/zaurususergroup.org/modules/UpDownload/dl-util.php on line 106

For Sale / Wanted / Selling Zaurus Battery

brashley46, odklizec,

I've bought a 1800 mA battery last week (thanks Ludwig !).

I haven't made full tests yet but i can say that :
- my zaurus lasts at least 2 times more than before when i use wifi,
- it can be recharged into the Zaurus with AC adaptor like the normal battery.
I will test charging with USB as soon as possible.

All seems great

And charging via USB works too

Right then, next month I'll have to do something about this.

Could anyone of buyers of this "custom" battery review it? How good/bad is this replacement battery? Can it be charged inside the zaurus (I don't have the battery charger) and without the risk of zaurus damage?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=89451\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I'd appreciate such a review too. Don't really want to lay out that much for a battery without some idea if it will charge from the cradle!

Software / Static Vlc Media Player 0.8.2 Binary Available Now

Just tried zplayer (front end for mplayer, like kino2) and it may possibly work with vlc (haven't tried it).  There's a line where you specify where mplayer is, including the name of the program.

That might work as a front end for vlc.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=87833\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I might be interested in this as a more-than-barebones frontend for vlc, but i don't read Nihongo ... does zplayer work on the 5500? I can't even tell that much from the zplayer website.

To correct these frequent misconceptions: it does play .WMV files, if the codec(s) used for the file are supported by FFMPEG (i.e. belong to/are related to the MPEG-4 family). The same of course goes for .AVI, .ASF, .MOV and of course .MP4/.3GP. These are all just containers, so the file type says nothing whatsoever about the encoding of the actual A/V data.

Best regards,
Chris.

Sorry, I had not looked at that thread. It wouldn't play the .wmv I tried. I'll try PocketDivXencoder and see if I get any better results.

General Discussion / I Would Like Some Opinions

palm lifedrive

i was beating my head around and i came to the conclussion that i hate palm so much, even if they stuck linux behind its product, i still would not buy one.

I would like to see some opinions here or expiriences of the devices from palm and why some of you came over to the zaurus bandwagon.

i hear next year , they will add linux to the mix.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=85573\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

My first handheld was a Franklin eBookman. Nifty, but obsolete when I bought it three years ago.
The second, one year ago, was a treo90. Nice colour screen, some nifty apps available, no speakers, no mp3 player, too much proprietary software ... but I did find the free acrobat reader for Palm that some of you can't seem to locate. Also obsolete when I bought it. Thumbboard was nice.
Now I've got the 5500. I'm in love. Most of the apps and versatility of the later Palm devices at half the price, plus the ability to flash the OS to something approximating my needs as an sf reader/fan photographer ... I love being able to switch the CF card out of my camera into the Z and do a rudimentary edit on my  pictures. Mind you I'd like to figure out how to move the .jpegs from the CF card to the SD card so as to pop it back into the camera for more!

[...] no frontend showed up. I'm running the 3.1.3 update [...][div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=86694\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
The IPKG installation was tested to work on a stock 3.1.3, so it should run ok. My guess is that it didn't in your case. Please check your installation target, and if it is possible that the installation ran out of space. Installation was tested to internal memory only, and a rough total of 5.5 MByte is needed to hold the executables.

If all else fails, you may want to try installation after backing up your data and doing a full reset. If that doesn't work either, there is always the chance the IPKG got corrupted somehow along the way.

Best regards,
Chris.

Thanks, Chris, I'll see tomorrow after the Tour de France first stage telecast how much memory I've got in there. I can always move the picturefiles I've got on internal memory to my SD card.

okay. As a footnote, I had to backup, full-reset and restore ... but I got this vlc player successfully installed, including the frontend. Nice! Doesn't play .wmv files, but will play .avi, somewhat jerkily ... of course the sample .avis I loaded are a bit jerky on the pc anyway.

Hello everybody,

since VLC media player has (finally!) reached version 0.8.2 yesterday, I decided to do a quick updated build of my static executable today and make it available here.

As a quick reminder, my build is targeted primarily towards SL-5500 (i.e. non-PXA-processor) Zauri running an original Sharp ROM, but people have successfully used it on other Z-models as well. Some more discussion about it can be found in this thread as well as this thread.

For those of you who just want to grab the executable, just grab the vlc_0.8.2_arm.zip attached to this post. For those of you feeling adventurous, there is also an IPK including a minimalist external frontend as well available now. Be warned, though: this is highly experimental, and you're using that IPK at your own risk. That said, if you're still interested, grab the vlcplay_0.8.2_arm.ipk attached to this post (also includes the same executable as the ZIP file, so you don't need both).

Best regards,
Chris.

Hi, I installed the vlcplay_0.8.2_arm.ipk but no frontend showed up. I'm running the 3.1.3 update Sharp ROM on my 5500 right now. How should I find the frontend?

How's the battery life? I've heard it's not great...Thoughts on making it better?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=85412\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Yeah, the battery life on a 5500 is not real great, about 2 hours of continuous use. There are battery extender packs out there (for example on eBay) that use 4 AA batteries to recharge the internal LIon. And I hear the internal will pack it in after about 400 full recharges.

Unless one of the veterans knows any better?

Accessories / Help Me Choosing A Memory Card
« on: June 20, 2005, 07:40:54 pm »
I've got a sandisk 128 MB MultiMediaCard, not an SD card, which I originally bought 2 years ago for use in my old Franklin eBookman. Occasionally the Zaurus File Transfer interface doesn't read it correctly; looks like it's trying to read it in Japanese    . (I'm running the 3.1.3 ROM at the moment, using ZFT and Qtopia interfaces to my Windows XP box.) And it won't write large files, particularly .mpg, to the card. Should I blow off the MMC and get a real SD card, or is it a peculiarity of the interface software?

Sharp ROMs / Which Sharp-based Rom Do You Use?

Heh. On my new-to-me 5500 I'm running the 3.1.3 ROM at the moment. I like the relative ease of file transfer.
