Qtopia seems to freeze on suspend, requires hard reset
« on: February 10, 2004, 11:54:01 am »
For some reason, my 5500 running tkcROM alpha3 will not suspend correctly.

For a while, it wouldn\'t suspend at all, meaning that when in the GUI, if I clicked on the \"suspend\" button, nothing would happen.  I flashed that problem away b/c I wanted to flash for other reasons, and I noticed that it would occur again after some time and some installations (no, unfortunately I\'m not sure after WHICH installations exactly).  I would love to hear about any identification/resolutions to this issue.

Now, when I click suspend, it appears that nothing happened, but then my QT will be totally unresponsive - I can still see my desktop, and the backlight stays on full-strength, but there is no response to my clicks.  This is occurring consistently.

It was not plugged in, and I let it sit in this state for a while rather than flipping the battery switch to reboot it, and eventually I plugged it into the dock station and the battery light went on, so at least the unit\'s power was still responsive.  At one point, I received a pop up message that indicated that memory usage was low, perhaps a sign that this may just be a QTopia crash?  I clicked ok, and the desktop remained unresponsive.  The latest time that I tried it, I could not get that message to appear.

Can anybody help?  I use the zaurus a lot, and it really isn\'t feasible for me to either leave it up and running or fully shut at all times...

Any help would be GREAT.

Thanks in advance-
N8

check your sd card is ok (fsck).

or just remove it, and see if you still get the problem.

My 5500 and c760 had similar problems caused in my case by a corrupt sd card.

Worth a go, but it\'s not certain to cure your problem.

Are you using home-on-sd with this rom?  If so, some people have had problems with certain brands of SD cards (i.e., sandisk), exhibiting the same symptoms (hang on suspend with lcd still on).  If so, I\'ve got a newer version of the prep-home-sd.sh script that may help.
Others have had a different problem, where nothing is visible on the SD after a reboot (in this case, a PNY SD card).  I don\'t think there is a workaround for that issue.

Thanks for the quick help - Unfortunately, I\'m not currently using the home-on-sd.

I took the SD card out (and CF for good measure), booted up, and the same thing is happening...?

Well, I think I just figured out that the device isn\'t just permanently hung, per se.  I left the 5500 on and not plugged in, and it seems that it tried to suspend again.  When I glanced at it, the message box \"The memory is extemely low.  Please reboot\" was up again.

Of course, I couldn\'t do that, and so I clicked \"OK\" and hit the Qtopia start button in the low-left corner.  After about 10-15 secs, it slowly started to pop up.  A minute or two later the Low Mem box started to fully disappear.  I then went through the strenuous task of trying to get SysInfo to load so that I could see what the memory killer is, but to no avail.  In fact, it was totally unresponsive after that - not responding for over 10 minutes to a click.

I\'m not near capacity on the ROM, so it seems that whatever is called for the suspend process (I\'ve no idea) just turns the 5500 into molasses.  Anyone have any experience with the suspend process, or anybody know of this issue?  Thanks again.

Nate

Rules that one out then. Do you have a bluetooth card inserted?

In fact take out everything you don\'t need just to rule them out.

can you telnet or ssh into the zaurus while it QT appears frozen?

You then may get some clues as to what is hanging by doing a ps -ef command, if you have top installed see if anything is hogging the cpu, ignore kpm-idled as this is your idle process and it is normal for this to have high runtime.

Thanks, Peter - I was looking for the commands to use and I just grabbed top, so I\'ll try that out when I get back to my desk later.
